Galactic Empires 1.05
Galactic Empires is a game of intergalactic imperialism. The galaxy
is a 20x20 grid containing 45 planets. Each player starts with one
home world that produces 10 ships per turn. Each turn the player
can launch fleets of one or more ships to other planets. Each fleet
moves a distance of two spaces the first turn and three every turn
thereafter until reaching their destination. It takes 10 turns to
go from corner to corner. If there are ships defending the planet,
a battle ensues until one side or the other is destroyed. Once a
fleet is launched, it can not be recalled from or contacted in
hyperspace.
As many as eight 4 to 9 player games may be active at any one time.
Each game progresses until only one player (or the computer) remains
This can take anywhere from 30 turns to 100 or more. Players will
not know who their opponents are until after the game starts. They
will not be able to leave a game (without being conquered) before
the 15th turn. Players who do not at least enter the game for 15
turns, are likely to find that their planets have overthrown them.

help. Please also note the following information:
Files
GEMAIN.INS, GEGAME.INS (and GEBBS.KEY if you've registered) belong in the
same directory as GEBBS.EXE and GEDAILY.EXE.
Command Line Options
All commands are listed in COMMANDS.BOI. Installation examples
can be found in INSTALL.BOI. Galactic Empires supports most of
the commands available. However, due to the fact that Galactic
Empires does not have a Hall of Fame, the following command line
switches do not have any effect (/A, /X, /Y).
Running the Daily Event
The most frequently asked question I get is. "Why won't the
game begin?" My reply is usually, "Are you running the Daily
Event?" To which I get, "Daily Event???"
The moral is: If you don't run the Daily Event, nothing happens.
GEBBS.EXE and GEDAILY depend upon eachother. GEBBS is what the
players use to join or quit games, to make moves, etc...
GEDAILY, which should be run on a regular schedule (once a day
is recommended), is what actually initializes the games, moves
the ships, conducts the battles, and writes the logs.
This program is designed to be run as a daily or regularly timed
event. I recommend running it once a day in the wee hours of
the morning. At one move per day, it takes 10 days to go from
corner to corner of the galaxy. WARNING: Do NOT set this
program up such that it runs while a user is online. Normally
this will not cause any problems, however, when initializing a
new game, it can take several minutes to run (especially on an
XT). Normally the program will not take more than 10 seconds or
so. GEDAILY.EXE maintains an activity log: GEDAILY.LOG.
Resetting the Game or Recovering from GE102
If you would like to start over, or clean the slate, or if you
had run the buggy release GE102, you should delete the various
data files (listed below). The two most important files to
delete are GEGAMES.DAT and GEPLAYER.LST. If you delete these,
all existing games will be gone. You will also want to make
sure you delete GEGAME?.FLT, GEGAME?.DAT, and GEGAME?.LOG.
Game Strategy (questionable) and other Arcana
The game itself was originally written in 1979 by Thomas G. Cleaver
in Apple Basic. In 1987, it was rewritten in Turbo Pascal 3.0 on
an MSDOS-PC by Andrew J. Mead, who wrote this BBS version in 1990
in Turbo Pascal 5.5. The home version of this game which allows up
to 400 planets, and 20 players is floating around BBSland as a
freeware program. An upgraded version of the home game will be
available when I get around to it (grin). The home game does make
an excellent solitaire or 2 or 3 player game.
Production
Every player's homeworld is a 10 producer. The rest of planets
are unknown at the beginning of the game. The production values
for the other worlds will generally be between 0 and 3, but each
game will usually contain three or four worlds in the 6 to 9
range. There is no upper limit, but if a planet producing 12 or
more ships a turn is not captured in the first few turns, it
will generally be left alone.
Early Strategy
The beginning of the game can be very important. You need to
capture the worlds near your homeworld, but you need to keep
enough ships on your homeworld to defend against rougue players.
You can attack another player immediately, but generally all
that accomplishes is to weaken both yourself and your victim.
It is very important to capture some planets that produce ships
early in the game. If all you do is attack, and not build any
ships, you will run out of ships very quickly.
Patience and a War of Attrition
Once the early expansion period slows down, the game shifts into
its strategic phase. The key to winning is to out-produce the
other players, and get them to attack eachother instead of you.
The player that has the highest production total has the
advantage. If this is you, it is generally best to sit and grow
and let the other players weaken themselves. If you find
yourself on the short end of the production stick, the game is
by no means lost. By selectively attacking your larger opponent
in situations where you outnumber him, you can destroy a large
number of his ships with only minor losses to your own fleet.
Attacking
Generally the attacking fleet should outnumber the defending
fleet 2 to 1 to ensure victory. The defenders have the
advantage, but only when the fleets are relatively close in
size. The larger the size difference in fleets, the more
complete the massacre.
Distances
It is to your advantage to be aware of how far apart two worlds
are, and how long it takes to get from one to the other. At one
turn a day, it takes a week and a half to go from corner to
corner.
Text Map
The game generates a text map that the SysOp may make available
for download. If not you can capture the map by using the [G]
option. This map is designed to printed at 16 characters per
inch.
Registration and Trial Period
Galactic Empires is ShareWare. It is totally uncrippled. There are
no bells or whistles, or time delays, or time bombs, or limited
functions. You have the whole works. You are allowed to try
Galactic Empires online for up to two (2) months. At that point you
should either take the game offline, or register it. The current
registration fee is ten United States dollars ($10US). When you
register, you will be sent a registration key that will work on all
future releases of Galactic Empires. Please consult REGISTER.BOI
for further details about registering this and other BOI doors.
What the files are
file what it is and where it lives
GEBBS.EXE This is the online game Galactic Empires
GEDAILY.EXE This is the "daily" event for Galactic Empires
GEMAIN.INS This is the instruction file that is viewable from
the main menu in Galactic Empires.
GEGAME.INS This is the instruction and strategy file that is
displayed when the player is actually in a game.
I ask that anyone interested in translating these
files into other languages to contact me personally.
A near future release of Galactic Empires and my other
doors will also allow for all text WITHIN the game to
be translated as well. These files belong in the same
directory as GEBBS.EXE
GEBBS.KEY This is the registration key file. This file (if you
have it) belongs in the same directory as GEBBS.EXE
GEPLAYER.LST This file contains data about every user who enters
GEBBS. It is maintained in the same directory as
GEBBS.EXE.
GEGAMES.DAT This is GE's main data file. This file contains basic
information about the games themselves. If this file
or GEPLAYER.LST are deleted, you will need to start
over from scratch. This file is maintained in the
same directory as GEBBS.EXE
GEGAMEn.DAT These three files are for each game in the same
GEGAMEn.FLT directory as GEBBS.EXE. The "n" is replaced by the
GEGAMEn.LOG actual game number. GEGAMEn.DAT contains the basic
information about the game: who the players are, what
turn it is, how many ships are on each planet, etc...
This file is critical. GEGAMEn.FLT, if and when it
exists, contains the actual fleets that are travelling
through hyperspace. When no fleets are in space, this
file will not exist. GEGAMEn.LOG is the activity log
that players can view online. This file can safely
be shortened or deleted. If a game goes on for a long
time this file can become quite large. If this is a
problem, I recommend running a program like Delogger,
which is available from me (freeware), that will
shorten any text file the the last x number of lines.
If I have time, a future version of GE will have have
a tokenized log file which will be much much smaller
in size.
GEGAMEn.MAP When each game is initialized, GEDAILY creates this
file in the same directory as GEBBS.EXE. This file
contains a text representation of the galaxy. You may
choose to make this file available for download.
GEDAILY.LOG This file is an activity log for GEDAILY.EXE. It lets
you know what GEDAILY is up to. This file can be
deleted or shortened (see the above comment about
delogger).
BOIERR.LOG The BBS Onliner Interface maintains this log file for
diagnostic reasons.

caused by running these programs. If you are attempting an
installation, it is always best to TEST the program before opening
it up to the public. Make sure all switches are correct. If you
