DNC Version 1.02 January 26, 1992 Tutorial - Page 1
The following is a set of step-by-step instructions for those people
who would like try out DNC without reading the operator's manual first.
Once you have gone through all 12 steps, you should be somewhat
familiar with the basic operations of DNC. DNC was designed to be
very easy to use. You will need to read the DNC.DOC file to use all
of the features of DNC. This is just a quick tutorial.
1) At the DOS prompt type "DNC" (w/o the quotes) and hit <Return>.
2) Enter the database filename : TARRASCH
In the upper right corner of the screen you will see the blank
move list that looks like this :
---------- ----------
1
2
3
4
5
6
3) Hit the down arrow twice.
The cursor will move a couple times and P-K4 will appear in
White's move space. It will be highlighted. DNC automatically
selects a move if it is the only one available. That is what it
just did. White's King Pawn will have advanced 2 squares. The
move list now looks like this :
---------- ----------
1 P-K4
2
3
4
5
6
4) Hit the down arrow four more times.
As you do this, pieces will move on screen and notes will appear
in the note space below the move list. Moves are being
automatically placed in the move list. When done, N-Q2 will be
highlighted. The move list now looks like this :
---------- ----------
1 P-K4 P-K3
2 P-Q4 P-Q4
3 N-Q2
4
5

5) Hit the down arrow one more time.
At this point DNC has detected that several alternative moves are
available on Black's third move. DNC presents all these moves to
you and you get to select one of them. The move space has been
replaced with the Alternate Move list. It looks like this
(with N-QB3 will be highlighted) :
Alternate Moves (#3 Black)
N-QB3 N-KB3
P-QR3 P-QB4
P-KB4
6) hit the down arrow 3 times and then hit <Return>.
You have now selected P-QB4 as the alternate move of choice. You
are now back in the regular move list, P-QB4 has been added to the
move list. P-QB4 is highlighted and the move list looks like :
---------- ----------
1 P-K4 P-K3
2 P-Q4 P-Q4
3 N-Q2 P-QB4
4
5
6
7) Hit the down arrow once.
DNC detects several possible moves for White's 4th move. You
are presented with the following list :
Alternate Moves (#4 White)
PxBP PXQP
P-KN3 KN-B3
8) Hit the down arrow once and then <Return>.
You have selected PxQP as White's 4th move. This is shown on
the chessboard, and the move list now looks like :
---------- ----------
1 P-K4 P-K3
2 P-Q4 P-Q4
3 N-Q2 P-QB4
4 PxQP
5
6
9) Hit the up arrow once. (yes, we said the UP arrow)
Black's 3rd move, P-QB4 is highlighted and the White's PxQP is
undone.

10) Hit the following keys: <Return>, down arrow once, <Return> again.
At this point your move list should look like :
---------- ----------
1 P-K4 P-K3
2 P-Q4 P-Q4
3 N-Q2 N-KB3
4
5
6
What you just did in steps 9) and 10) was to go back to Black's
3rd move, select N-KB3 instead of the previously selected P-QB4,
and move back to the standard move list.
11) Hit the following keys: <Return> and then down arrow 5 times.
You will be prompted to enter a brand new move. Do so. Once the
move has been checked for legality, it will be automatically added
to the database and to the Alternate Moves list.
12) The highlight bar should be on the move you just created.
Hit <Return>.
The move list now shows the move you entered in place of the
previously selected N-KB3. At this point you should go read the
entire DNC.DOC file.
