  16. <general>The Infantry represents the keystone of any army. Today s infantry requires officers who are mentally agile and physically robust. The Infantry officer has one of the widest ranges of employment opportunities in the Canadian Forces. As an Infantry officer you can expect to spend alternating periods of three to five years employed in command and staff appointments on Regimental Duty and in staff and training positions. Approximately one half of your career will be spent performing the Infantry officer s primary function of command and leadership of soldiers as part of a combat arms team in such locations as the former Yugoslavia, the United Kingdom and the USA. Under present conditions, within two years of completing training you can expect to be commanding a mechanized infantry platoon equipped with the army s new state-of-the-art LAV III armoured fighting vehicle. The other half of your career will be spent performing essential staff duties in a wide variety of functions including operations, training, intelligence, logistics, and personnel administration, thus producing an extremely well-rounded and qualified officer. You should be aware that training in the Infantry is meant to prepare young people both physically and mentally to lead soldiers in critical and life-threatening situations. This requires highly motivated individuals who are prepared, in support of an operational mission, to put the safety and well-being of their soldiers ahead of their own.</general>
