The Navy offers two subsidized post-secondary education programs as an alternative entry route into some of the naval technician occupations. The Naval Combat Systems Technical Training Plan (NCSTTP) and Marine Engineering Technician Training Plan (METTP) are offered at recognized Canadian academic institutions.
The NCSTTP leads to the following trades:
┬╖Naval Weapons Technician
┬╖Naval Electronic Technician (Sonar)
┬╖Naval Electronics Technician (Communications)
┬╖Naval Electronics Technician (Radar)
And the METTP leads to the trade:
┬╖Marine Engineering Mechanic
Candidates will normally graduate in two years and be promoted to the rank of Acting Leading Seaman with an annual starting salary of approximately $49,000. In exchange, they have an obligatory service period of three years.
REGULAR OFFICER TRAINING PLAN (ROTP)
The Regular Officer Training Plan (ROTP) is the admission plan to attend the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, or any recognized Canadian university. Under this plan, the cost of tuition, uniforms, books, instruments and other essential fees are borne by the Department of National Defense. Medical and dental care, are also provided. Officer Cadets receive a starting monthly salary of over $1,300 and are responsible for costs such as lodgings and meals.
Graduates of the ROTP are obliged to serve a minimum of five years in the Regular (full-time) component of the Canadian Forces.
