Does Les Levine really believe, as he wrote in his editorial "It's Realistic, but Is It Art?" [SR of The Arts, February], that "the social and political problems of a society are a valid medium for art"? Surely Mr. Levine meant to say that the social and political problems of a society are a valid subject for art, and that pho- tography, cinematography, and the other media should try to cope with them. To my knowledge, the only people who have tried to use social and political problems washington bureaucrats. Since Mr. Levine is no Hitler, I can only conclude that he wed This conclusion strengthened by his apparen telet that contemporary artists have been ignoring such "serious and necessary content" as life and social problems in order to chase their own tails. This may be true in the circles Mr. Levine moves in, but is he un- aware of the work of such photographers as W.
