OCR: algorithm* A procedure or set of rules that can be followed in order to solve a well-defined problem. analog Referring to an ability to change continuously and in direct proportion toa dynamic phenomenon, thereby imitating it. applications Computer programs that perform a specific task, such as software word processing, inventory control, and educational skills. architecture The overall design of a computer system, including how the components are connected both physically and functionally artificial The simulation of human intelligence by a machine; this is intelligence* ASCII more a goal than a fact. American Standard Code for Information Interchange; standard system for changing characters into binary code. assembly A low-level computer language composed of symbolic language* representations of machine language. baud* A unit of data transmission speed; typically, one baud equals one bit per second. binary number* A number in base two, which uses only the digits O and 1. The first five binary numbers are 1, 10, 11, 100, and 101. bit* From binary digit; the smallest piece of information in a digital system- a 0 or 1 , or a physical representation of either. bridge A device used to connect two local area networks, enabling them to exchange data even though they may have different buffer architectures and use different protocols. A space in memory where data are temporarily held, as, for example, during transfer between a computer and a printer operating at a slower speed buq* An error in hardware or software that prevents it from operating bulletin board correctly. An on-line board that allows callers to read or leave messages, system converse or play games, and download programs for use on their computers. byte* A basic unit of computer information, often composed of 8 bits. A kilobyte (K) equals 1,024 bytes, a megabyte (M) equals CAD/CAM 1.024K bytes, and a gigabyte equals 1,024M bytes. Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing* - The use of computers in the design and creation of a product, including the automation of manufacturing tasks. CASE Computer-aided software engineering - The automated development of software. CD-ROM Compact Disc-Read Only Memory; a laser-read disk that stores read-only memory. clip art* lamges stored on disc and ready to be clipped out electronically and pasted onto a document. clone A computer compatible with a more expensive computer and able to process programs for the latter. compiler* A program that translates a particular high-level language into low-level language that can be processed by a particular CPU. connect time The time actually spent connected to an on-line service such as a bulletin board system. CPU Central Processing (or Processor) Unit; the part of a computer that executes the functions of arithmetic and logic, interprets instructions, and maintains control over hardware. curso rt A movable spot of light on a display screen that indicates where the next entered instruction will be displayed. cyberspace* The web of computer networks and electronic information services that can be accessed from a computer, using a modem and communications software. database* An organized collection of information or data in computer-readable form. debug desktop publishing To search for and eliminate errors in a software program. Generating and producing high-quality printed matter with a personal computer and an electronic printer. digital technology information . Composed of, or employing, discrete, binary representations of disk drive The hardware that places in formation on , or retrieves information from, floppy disks or hard disks. DOS Disk Operating System; a popular operating system designed for IBM computers. Downlo ad Receive a program, file, or other data from another computer via a modem. electronic mail Letters and other written messages sent from one computer to ano ther, via telephone lines or over a local area network; often called e-mail. electronic Address on a computer network where a person picks up mailbox expert system* messages sent by other computer users. A computer program that acts like an expert by employing a specific-knowledge database and rules of inference. floppy disk A flexible, magnetic disk, used for external memory storage. FLOPS in the CPU. Floating Point Operations Per Second; a speed of computation flowchart* A graphic description of the scheme of logic operations, fuzzy logic* used as an aid in programming. Computer-usable algorithms, derived from fuzzy set theory, that enable the handling of sets whose members fit only partly into their groupings - a bridge between mathematics and the complexity of human thought. gate Circuit element; the locus of a logic operation within a chip, (gate, logic*) producing either an AND, OR, or NOT function graphic user A program that allo ws a person to interact with a computerby interface (GUD) pointing to graphic symbols on the screen, generally by using a mouse rather than by typing in instructions. graphics tablet An input device in which graphical information can be drawn on a flat surface. groupware* Network software that enables groups of people to work cooperatively on projects, by communicating , sharing tasks and information , and controlling work flow. hard disk A hard , magnetic disk, used for memory storage. It has a far larger storage capacity than a floppy disk. hardware The tangible features of a computer system: disk drive, printer, and so on. high-level A symbolic programming language that is readily understood language by the user, such as BASIC, FORTRAN, or COBOL. hypertext* Documents presented in an interactive computer environment; allo ws users to branch from one screen display to other text, graphics or video. icon* A graphics symbol on the display screen that represents an object or function, such as a data file or a printer. information A proposed national infastructure of cable and telephone lines that would make a voice , data, and video communications available to everyone. input; Information that is entered into a computer, and any one input device* of various methods for doing this, such as a keyboard, integrated mouse, or graphics tablet. An organized array of microelectronic elements interconnected circuit* Internet* on a single semiconductor chip. A world wide network of computer networks linking government interpreter* agencies, universities, corporations and individuals. A program that translates a particular high-level language into a machine's low level language in a piece-by-piece manner. joystick An input device in which directional pushes on a lever keyboard* impart specific commands to the computer. A tactile input device consisting of an array of keys arranged LAN some what like an ordinary type writer. Local area network - h computer networks, a network generally con tained inside one building or complex. language (computer An encoding of computer commands, required for all programmable computers.
