To view this file, open the file by using Notepad, turn word wrap
on, and maximize the window.
These instructions assume that the CD-ROM drive letter is D and that you are installing the 1996 GME to the C drive.
1. Exit Windows to DOS.
(Windows 95 Users: Select Programs from the Start menu then select MS-DOS prompt.)
2. Create a new directory on the hard drive called GME96.
a. From the root directory of C (C:\>), type MD GME96 <enter>.
3. Copy the files listed below from the GME96 directory on the CD-ROM to the newly created GME96 directory on the hard drive (where D: is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive).
a. Type D: <enter>.
b. Type CD.\GME96 <enter>.
c. Type COPY *.CPL C:\GME96 <enter>.
d. Type COPY GME96.EXE C:\GME96 <enter>.
e. Type COPY GME96.INI C:\GME96 <enter>.
f. Type COPY GME96.ICO C:\GME96 <enter>.
e. Type COPY PFAR.BMH C:\GME96 <enter>.
4. Copy the files listed below from the DLL sub-directory in the GME96 directory on the CD-ROM to the GME96 directory on the hard drive:
a. Type CD.\DLL <enter>.
b. Type COPY DECO.DLL C:\GME96 <enter>.
c. Type COPY BIDS45.DLL C:\GME96 <enter>.
d. Type COPY CPL23.DLL C:\GME96 <enter>.
e. Type COPY OWL250.DLLC:\GME96 <enter>.
f. Type COPY P3G.DLL C:\GME96 <enter>.
g. Type COPY PLSLIBW.DLL C:\GME96 <enter>.
h. Type COPY PLSBTLLD.DLL C:\GME96 <enter>.
i. Type COPY PLSLIBWD.DLL C:\GME96 <enter>.
j. Type COPY PLSRWTSD.DLL C:\GME96 <enter>.
k. Type COPY DIB.DRV C:\GME96 <enter>.
5. Check for the existence of a few files.
a. Type C: <enter>.
b. Type CD.\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
c. Look for the following files: CTL3D.DLL
CTL3DV2.DLL
BC450RTL.DLL
You can easily search for these files by typing DIR (filename).
If any of these files are not found in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory, then you must copy them from the CD-ROM. To do this:
a. Type D: <enter>.
b. Type CD.\GME96\DLL <enter>.
c. Type COPY (filename) C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM <enter>.
6. Copy the files listed below from the CIM directory on the CD-ROM to the hard drive:
a. Type D: <enter>.
b. Type CD.\CIM <enter>.
c. Type COPY COMPUDIR.HLP C:\GME96 <enter>.
7. Copy the file listed below from the CIM directory on the CD-ROM to the WINDOWS directory on the hard drive:
a. Type COPY CSD.EXE C:\WINDOWS <enter>.
8. Copy the file listed below from the GME96 directory on the CD-ROM to the WINDOWS directory on the hard drive:
a. Type D: <enter>.
b. Type CD.\GME96 <enter>
c. Type COPY CSGME96.INI C:\GME96 <enter>.
9. The GME96.INI file is copied to the GME96 directory on the hard drive during install. You will need to check 3 lines in the file to verify that the correct CD-ROM drive letter is shown. To check this file:
a. Type C: <enter>.
b. Type CD.\GME96 <enter>.
c. Type EDIT GME96.INI <enter>
d. Check these 3 lines for the correct CD-ROM drive letter.
CDROM=D:\
ListLocation=D:\IDX\
DBListLocation=D:\
(where D is the CD-ROM drive letter)
10. Check the contents of a file called DBLIST.CPL. To do this:
a. Type EDIT DBLIST.CPL <enter>.
b. Check this line for the correct CD-ROM drive letter.
GME96 D:\GME96
(where D is the CD-ROM drive letter)
11. The last file to check is the CSGME96.INI file in the Windows directory. To do this:
a. Type CD.\WINDOWS <enter>.
b. Type EDIT CSGME96.INI <enter>.
c. Check for the following two lines:
[GME96]
GME96=C:\GME96
(where C is the drive where GME96 was installed)
* (Windows 95 users please go to step #12A below)
12. Make a program group and program item for GME96.
a. Start Windows.
b. From Program Manager, click File, New, Program Group, OK.
c. For the description, give the program group a name, such as 1996 Grolier Encyclopedia.
d. Click OK.
e. From Program Manager, click File, New, Program Item, OK.
f. For Description, type Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia.
g. At the command line type C:\GME96\GME96.EXE (assuming the program was installed to C:\GME96).
h. Click Change Icon and double-click on the icon you wish to use.
i. Click OK.
* Windows 95 users:
12A. Make a new folder for GME96.
a. Exit the MS-DOS window.
b. Choose Settings from the Start menu.
c. Choose Task Bar.
d. Click on the Start Menu Programs tab.
e. Click on Add.
f. On the Command Line type c:\GME96\GME96.exe then click Next.
g. Click New Folder.
h. Type 1996 Grolier Encyclopedia for the new folder name.
i. Click Next.
j. Type Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia for the name of the shortcut.
k. Click Finish.
l. Click OK.
Install QuickTime for Windows version 2.03, steps 13-15 (if it is not already installed):
13. Select Run from the File menu.
(Windows 95 Users: Select Run from the Start menu on the Task Bar.)
14. Type D:\QTW203\QTINSTAL.EXE (where D is the CD-ROM drive letter) and press Enter.
15. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Install the Compuserve Information Service and Compuserve Net Launcher, steps 16-21 (optional):
16. Select Run from the File menu.
(Windows 95 Users: Select Run from the Start menu on the Task Bar.)
17. Type D:\CIM\SETUP (where D is the CD-ROM drive letter) and press Enter.
18. Follow the on-screen instructions.
19. Select Run from the File menu.
(Windows 95 Users: Select Run from the Start menu on the Task Bar.)
20. Type D:\CNL\SETUP (where D is the CD-ROM drive letter) and press Enter.
21. Follow the on-screen instructions.
22. Double-click the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia icon to start GME96.
(Windows 95 Users: Select Programs from the Start menu. Then choose 1996 Grolier Encyclopedia then Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia.)
