Installation/Uninstallation
---------------------------
Updating to GME99 from an earlier version of the GME
GME99 is a brand new product that is a full replacement for earlier
editions. If you have an earlier edition of the GME, you can uninstall
it from your system since the GME99 does not require this software to run.
Previous editions of the GME will not interfere with the operation
of GME99 if you choose to keep them on your system.
Windows 98, 95 and NT Users
If the AutoPlay feature is enabled on your computer, the installation
program should automatically launch when you insert the 1999 GME CD-ROM
into your drive. Follow the on-screen instructions to continue the
installation. After installing the program files for GME99 you will
be prompted to install QuickTime for Windows(R) which is produced by
Apple Computer, Inc. You must install QuickTime for Windows(R) to be
able to use the 1999 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia.
If the AutoPlay feature is disabled or if you are not using Windows 95
native drivers for your CD-ROM drive, the installation will not begin
automatically; you can begin the installation by going to Start, Run,
and typing D:\SETUP.EXE (assuming D is your CD-ROM drive letter) and
pressing the Enter key.

from the Start menu on the Taskbar. Then, choose Grolier Interactive,

The installation program for GME99 installs a 32-bit version of
QuickTime for Windows on Windows 98, 95, and NT systems; 16-bit on
Windows 3.1/3.11. QuickTime must be installed for GME99 to work.
You should install QuickTime and also delete other versions of
QuickTime if prompted to do so during the installation.

-----------------
Registering GME99
-----------------
How to Register
When you run GME99 for the first time, you will see a registration
screen with a "Register Now" button and a check box to disable that
screen from appearing again. If you've checked the disable option at
some point and the screen no longer appears, you can check the
Display Registration Reminder option in the Preferences dialog
available from Edit menu in GME to restore the registration reminder
screen or see the "Other Ways to Register" section below.
Once you click on the Register Now button you will be presented with
options to register by Modem, Internet (except for Windows 3.1/3.11 users),
Mail, Fax, and Phone. The quickest and easiest way is to Register by Modem.
Choose this option if you have a modem connected to your computer.
If you don't have a modem, another way to register is by phone (users
outside the United States or Canada are not given this option). The
Register by Mail option prints out a pre-addressed mail-in registration
card that you must apply postage to and drop in the mail.
Other Ways to Register
If you haven't registered yet, but have disabled the registration
screen in GME99, you have two other options for registering.
The first option is to go to the Grolier Interactive entry under
Programs in the Start menu and select the Register Now option.
This provides the same three options you would get if you selected
Register Now from within the GME. The second option is to fill out
and mail in the registration card that came in the box with the
program. You can also register by writing to our customer service via
e-mail at custserv@grolier.com.
Bonus New York Times Science Questions and Answers
When you register, you will be given a bonus feature -- The
"New York Times Science Questions and Answers" available from the
title screen and the Gallery.

Troubleshooting
---------------
QuickTime for Windows(R)
Here are a few possible GME99 error messages that can occur if QuickTime
is not installed or if there is a QuickTime for Windows(R) conflict on
your system:
1. QuickTime Initialization Failed
2. Invalid Page Faults
3. Call To An Invalid .dll File
Installing QuickTime
*Please Note: To install QuickTime 3.0 Administrator privileges are
required for Windows NT users only.
The installation program for GME99 installs a 32-bit version of
QuickTime for Windows on Windows 98, 95 and NT systems; 16-bit on
Windows 3.1/3.11. QuickTime must be installed for GME99 to work.
You should install QuickTime and choose to delete other versions
of QuickTime if prompted to during the installation.
QuickTime Initialization Failed and Invalid Page Faults
If you do not choose to install QuickTime you could receive a
"QuickTime initialization failed" message followed by an invalid page
fault error when you attempt to launch GME99. If you receive either
of these error messages when trying to launch GME99, try reinstalling
QuickTime as outlined below.
If you need to reinstall QuickTime on a Windows 3.1/3.11 system, do the
following:
1. Put the GME99 CD-ROM into your drive.
2. In Program Manager, go to File, Run, and type
D:\QTW16\QTINSTAL.EXE (where D is the drive letter for your
CD-ROM drive and press Enter.
If you need to reinstall QuickTime in Windows 98, 95, or NT do the
following:
1. Put the GME99 CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive.
2. If AutoPlay is enabled on your computer, a window will appear
asking you to "Run" or "Cancel". Select "Cancel". (If this
window does not appear, skip to step #3.)
3. Go to the Start menu on the Taskbar, choose Run, type
D:\WIN95\QTW32\SETUP.EXE and press Enter.
Call To An Invalid .DLL File
This error can occur on Windows 95 or possibly Windows 98 or NT systems
if more than one version of QuickTime is present on your system.
If you receive this error try reinstalling QuickTime as outlined above
and remove earlier versions as prompted during the installation.
Multimedia Playback
Grainy Video, Animation, or Dynamic Maps (Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0
Workstation users)
If you experience problems with the appearance of any of these features
of the GME99, it is recommended to experiment with the Desktop Area and
colors settings for your video display driver to find the optimal
configuration. To access your video display settings, click the Start
button, go to Settings, Control Panels, open Display, and click the
Settings tab. Try increasing the Color Palette to 16-bit Highcolor
or 32-bit Truecolor or adjusting the Desktop Area to improve the
appearance of multimedia items in the GME99. Click OK and restart
your computer to make any changes take effect.
Making Modifications to the QuickTime Control Panel
If you have installed QuickTime for Windows, you will see a QuickTime
icon. Modifying the QuickTime Control panel settings can correct a
wide variety of errors including the following:
* Lockups when opening pictures, interactivities, or any multimedia
* Split screen or fractured video and out of sync audio playback
* Errors such as general protection faults and invalid page faults
during Video playback
* High speed sound playback in some videos or interactivities
* General Protection Faults in module GMEOVRLY.EXE when attempting to
start the GME99
Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0 Workstation users:
If you experience any problems playing multimedia in the GME99 go from
the Start button to Settings, Control Panels, and open the QuickTime
icon. Select Video Settings and select the option for Safe Mode
(GDI Only). Close the QuickTime Control Panel, restart Windows, and then
retry the GME99 to see if the playback has improved.
Windows 3.1/3.11 users:
To modify the QuickTime Control Panel open the Main program group,
Control Panels, and double-click the QuickTime Control Panel.
If you experience any problems playing multimedia in the GME99 try
changing the "Draw Method" used by Apple's QuickTime for Windows.
To do this, click the video tab which should have appeared towards the
top of the the QuickTime Control Panel window. Change the "Draw Method."
"Windows Bitmap (DIB)" works best on most machines. Then, click Apply.
Next, try and run the GME99. If problems persist, try another Draw
Method. Be sure to click Apply in the Quicktime Control Panel after
each change to the Draw Method. You can toggle between the GME99 and
the QuickTime Control Panel by holding down the Alt key and pressing Tab
to switch between the applications.
Audio Playback
The 1999 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia contains both digital audio
and MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) format audio files.
MIDI sound files are labeled as such in their captions and are
generally the National Anthems and Classical Musical Selections.
Note: If a SoundBlaster 64 splash screen appears before the title
screen of the GME99, the SoundBlaster 64 screen can be eliminated
by disabling it in the SoundBlaster preferences. This SoundBlaster
screen can appear with programs that utilize QuickTime for Windows.
Troubleshooting audio playback problems for Windows 98, 95, and NT
If the sound quality is poor try disabling SRS software which is a 3D
stereo sound utility. SRS software could appear on the Tasktray and if
it appears as an icon can be disabled with a right-click. Another way
to disable this in Windows 98, 95, or NT is to press the keys CTRL - ALT
- DEL, select SRS if it appears on the Close Program List, and choose to
End Task on this.
If you experience audio playback problems with the GME99 and are running
on Windows 98, 95, and NT try modifying the QuickTime Control Panel
by clicking the Start button on the Taskbar and going up to Settings,
Control Panels, and double-clicking the QuickTime icon.
At this point a QuickTime settings window will open. Click the down arrow
which displays a drop down list of options. Choose Sound Out to display
options the playback device (either wavOut or DirectSound) and also the
Rate, Size, and Use options. Try experimenting with the Rate option
in particular if you are experiencing any audio playback problems such
as skips or background static. If prompted to save any changes click OK.
No Audio in GME99
If you are getting no sound in GME99, please check to be sure that your
sound card is set up properly in Windows. Check to make sure your
speakers or headphones are plugged in and all connections are proper as
well.
To test your .WAV and MIDI audio setup in Windows 3.1/3.11 do the following:
1. Go from File to Run. At the command line type MPLAYER and click OK.
2. Under File on the menu bar select Open. Search for either a .WAV or
MIDI file (*.MID) to open off your hard drive or the location of
your choice.
3. QuickTime for Windows(R) audio playback can also be checked by
choosing Device from the Media Player menu bar and selecting
QuickTime for Windows. Open a QuickTime file off of the GME99
CD-ROM or location of your choice to test both video and audio
playback.
To test either .WAV or MIDI files in Windows 98, 95, or NT, do the
following:
1. Go to Start then to Programs.
2. Choose Accessories and choose Multimedia.
3. Click Media Player and click Device on the menu bar.
4. To test .WAV file audio choose Sound from under Device and open
a file to test.
5. To test MIDI audio choose MIDI Sequencer from under Device and open
a file to test.
If you don't hear audio with either WAV or MIDI files, then your
sound card is not working properly in Windows. Consult the sound card
manual or manufacturer for information on how to set up the sound card
properly in Windows.
Exception Errors, Cannot Read From Drive X Errors, Overflow of Hotspots,
and Lockups
In addition to lockups Exception 10H, Cannot Read from Drive, and
Overflow of Hotspots messages can often be corrected by cleaning the
bottom (unprinted side of the CD-ROM) with a soft, dry cloth from the
center to the outside edge in a straight line. Fingerprints or smudges
often cause these types of errors. Water can be used for cleaning
purposes. If you have a CD that is visibly damaged, you may need to
contact Technical Support about obtaining a replacement CD.
Older versions of video and/or CD-ROM device drivers can also cause
these types of error messages. If you have not updated your video and
CD-ROM device drivers and are experiencing these problems, you should
contact the manufacturer of your video card or CD-ROM drive to obtain
these drivers.
Printing, Saving, and Copying
Problems can occur with column alignment when attempting to print tables
from the GME99. Another potential issue is the font that is shown in the
tables may not be the same font the tables are printed with. This
problem does not seem to occur when using Postscript printers and drivers.
When saving articles from the GME99 the default file type the GME99 will
attempt to save this with is .RTF (rich text format). If you change the
file type to .TXT when trying to save an article you will not get the
graphemes included in the article and some entities may not print correctly.
Graphemes and mathematical formulas will probably not display correctly
if you are attempting to copy and paste them into MS-Word 6.0, Lotus Word Pro,
or in Write(Windows 3.x only) but should display correctly with MS-Word
97 or Wordpad. Programs that support the rich text format (.RTF) will
produce the best results.
Strange characters appear throughout articles
GME99 installs a special font to display certain characters within articles.
If you are running Windows 95 or Windows 98 and installed GME99 then restarted
your computer immediately after installation, the font may not have had time to
register with Windows. To resolve this, exit the GME and go to Settings from the
Start menu, select Control Panel, then select Fonts. With the Fonts window open,
press the F5 key to update the contents. A list of 8 Grolier fonts should appear
in this window. Close all windows and run GME99 again; the special characters
should now display correctly.
If you still see strange characters in the text, uninstall GME99 and reinstall,
running the program immediately after installation without restarting your computer.

Online Features
---------------
GME99 is both a rich reference source and a connection to the vast
resources contained on the Internet. Using the Online feature you can
access thousands of carefully-chosen links to World Wide Web sites
through the Grolier Internet Index and obtain Grolier Article Updates.
Starting from a linked article within GME99, you can click the
Online button, which will take you to a screen that lists the types of
links available for this particular article. You will need both a
modem and an Internet account from an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
to complete the connection to these online features.
If you are already on the Internet, you will be asked to specify
your Internet browser the first time you click on the online button.
You will need to bring up the Preferences dialog box by going to the
Edit menu and choosing Preferences. Using the Browse feature provided,
select the directory and program where your Internet browser software
resides, for example c:\netscape\netscape.exe, and click OK. From that
point on, clicking the online button will launch your browser and
automatically connect you to the appropriate online screen.
Setting up your Web Browser to be used in GME99
To use the online features of GME99 you must have a stand-alone Web
browser. This means that you have a separate icon for your Web
browser from the rest of the icons for your Internet service. If you
do not have this kind of Web Browser, ask your Internet provider
how to interface your service with such a browser (Netscape for
example). Some services will not allow a stand alone browser to
automatically dial the phone and connect. If your service is like this,
then you will have to first sign onto your system (dial up) before
using the online features of GME99.
To set it up your Web browser to connect to GME99, do the following:
Windows 3.x:
Start GME99. Go up to EDIT and choose PREFERENCES. Click the BROWSE
button. When choosing your Web Browser, use the BROWSE button. To
use the Browse button, click it, then navigate through the directories
on your hard drive and double click on the Web Browser's .exe file.
Now click OK.
Windows 98, 95, or NT:
First, start GME99. Go up to EDIT and choose PREFERENCES. Click the
WEB BROWSER button and then the BROWSE button. Use the BROWSE button
to search for your Web browser because merely typing in the path to
the Web browser's executable file and clicking OK will not save the
path to the registry.
After clicking BROWSE click the down arrow to the right of LOOK IN
to scroll down and go on to your computer's hard drive. Open your C:
drive if this is where your Browser is located. Open the Program
Files folder and then either the Netscape or Internet Explorer. Open
these folders further until you locate the executable file for the
program which is usually listed as Netscape or Iexplore in these folders.
Double-click this file and it should appear in a box that is labeled
Grolier Internet Access which shows the path to the Web browser.
Click OK here and OK back in Preferences also to make this take effect.
*** NOTE: Do not choose GME99.EXE as your web browser. This may
cause the program to crash.
Updating the Online Index
Grolier is always adding more links to online information. Therefore,
you will need to obtain an updated version of the Online Index
periodically. To do this, go to the Online menu in GME99 and click Update
Online Index.
