RULES for 2-HAND PINOCHLE
OBJECT : Score 100 points before your opponent does.
DECK : 48 cards. 4 suits - clubs, diamonds, spades, and hearts.
In each suit are 2 aces, 2 tens, 2 kings, 2 queens, 2 jacks,
and 2 nines. Ace is the highest ranking card, followed by
ten, king, queen, jack, and nine.
DEAL : Each player is dealt 12 cards. The rest of the deck is placed
face down on the table and is called the stock. The top card
of the stock is turned up. The suit of this card is the trump
suit.
Each hand played has 2 parts : MELD PLAY and TRICK PLAY.
MELD PLAY : The nondealer plays a card followed by the dealer. The
2 cards played are called a trick. The 1st card played
wins the trick unless the 2nd card is a higher card in the
same suit or the 2nd card is a trump from the trump suit
and the 1st card isn't. The 2 cards are removed and
placed on a discard pile. The trick winner may meld
(explained later). After melding, the trick winner takes
the top card from the stock (excluding the upcard). Then
the other player takes a card. The trick winner plays
the 1st card for the next trick. This process is repeated
until the stock is depleted.
For the last trick, the trick winner takes the last face
down card from the stock and shows it to the other player.
The other player takes the upcard.
MELDING : Melding is the only way to score during meld play. A meld
is one of the following combinations of cards:
Marriages - king and queen in same suit
4 points for each marriage in trump
2 points for other marriages
Run - ace, ten, king, queen, and jack in each suit
15 points
Arounds -
Jacks - jack in each suit
4 points
Queens - queen in each suit
6 points
Kings - king in each suit
8 points
Aces - ace in each suit
10 points
Pinochle - jack of diamonds and queen of spades
4 points
Dix - nine of trump
1 point
Only one meld may be made after each trick except a dix
which may be melded with another meld. Cards melded are
placed face up on the table, but may still be played in
tricks.
Cards already melded may also be used for other
melds if the card(s) has not already been used for the
same type of meld. Example/ If a king and queen of
spades are melded as a marriage, another king of spades
cannot be melded with the queen for a marriage, but a
jack of diamonds may be melded with the queen for pinochle.
For each meld at least one card must be from the player's
unexposed hand.
When melding a dix, the player may exchange it with the
upcard.
TRICK PLAY : After meld play the players' pick up their melded cards
and add them to their hands. Each player has 12 cards, and
the cards are played in tricks the same way as for meld
meld play except the following:
The 2nd player must follow suit if able to. If unable
to, the 2nd player must play a trump card. If the 2nd
player doesn't have any trump cards, the 2nd player may
play any card.
If the 1st card on the trick is a trump card, the
2nd player must beat the trump card is able to.
The trick winner gets 1 point for each ace, ten, and
king in the trick. The winner of the last trick gets
1 point.
SCORING : The scores are totalled after each hand. The 1st player
to reach 100 wins the game. If both reach 100 on the same
hand, the higher score wins. If the scores are identical,
additional hands are played until the tie is broken.
