  5. System Requirements
  6. -------------------

  8. This program is available in two versions: one with 8-bit samples (for use
  9. with 8- or 16-bit Sound Blasters), and one with 16-bit samples (for use with
  10. the Sound Blaster 16 only). Either version can also be used without a sound
  11. card, using the PC's built-in speaker.

  13. The system requirements vary with the version supplied. To check which
  14. version you have, enter

  20. The basic (8-bit samples) version requires the following:
  21.  
  22.     - PC compatible computer
  23.     - VGA display adapter
  24.     - 512K RAM (640K for Sound Blaster, with 536,000 bytes free
  25.       as reported by CHKDSK)
  26.  
  27. Although it should (?) run on an 8086 machine, it probably needs a 286 or
  28. better to be of any use.

  30. The 16-bit sample version requires the following:
  31.   
  32.     - PC compatible computer (286 or better)
  33.     - VGA display adapter
  34.     - 2Mb RAM (566,000 bytes free conventional memory, plus 622,592 bytes
  35.       (608K) of XMS (extended memory))
  36.     - Sound Blaster 16
  37.  
  38. This version can also be used on the basic system outlined above, if the PC
  39. speaker sound option is used.

  42. Installation
  43. ------------

  45. To install the program, all that is required is to create a directory for
  46. it on your hard disk and copy the files across. A program is included to
  47. do this for you, if necessary. Type INSTALL and follow the instructions
  48. given.

  51. Running

  54. Start the game by typing
  55.  
  56.     LOTF

  58. The first time this is done, the SETUP program will be run automatically,
  59. allowing you to set the sound device and other options. This program can be
  60. run at any time, should you want to change any of the settings, by entering
  61.  
  62.     SETUP
  63.  
  64. at the command prompt.
  65.  
  66. Note: If you are running the 16-bit version with the Sound Blaster 16, check
  67. the treble setting on the mixer. The SB16 software has probably set this to
  68. zero, to hide the noise heard when playing 8-bit samples. You should change
  69. this back to 127 when playing 16-bit samples, otherwise the sound will be
  70. unnecessarily dulled.

  92. The unregistered game is complete except for the hi-score table; this is
  93. enabled by a password supplied on registration. If you like the game,
  94. please register.

  108. If you would like to obtain the 'other' version of the program (e.g. the
  109. 16-bit version if you've got the 8-bit one), please add an extra £2.50 (UK
  110. residents; for outside the UK, add £5) to the registration fee, stating
  111. clearly which version you require. The 8-bit version is supplied on a
  112. 3.5" 720k disk, the 16-bit version on 3.5" 1.44Mb disks.
