- THE DAILY CROSSWORD
-
-
- 1 INSTALLATION.
- The Daily Crossword comes complete with an installation program which
- will transfer the entire system onto your hard disk. Simply place the
- diskette into drive A, and type a:install, or if you are using drive B
- then type b:install. You will be presented with an input screen which
- allows you to specify the target drive (your hard disk), and the name
- of the directory into which THE DAILY CROSSWORD is to be installed.
- Default values are given for each of these input fields. Pressing Enter
- when the cursor is in the directory name field will start the install-
- ation process. Messages will flash on the screen to keep you informed
- of progress.
-
- 2.RUNNING THE PROGRAM.
- One of the functions of the installation program is to create a BAT
- file in the root directory of the target drive. The name of this file is
- the same as the name of the directory you choose for THE DAILY CROSSWORD
- and it will start the program, simply by typing in the name you have
- chosen. A prompt will advise you of this at the end of the installation.
-
- 3.PROGRAM FEATURES.
- 3.1.TOTALLY AUTOMATED CROSSWORD CONSTRUCTION.
- Forget about searching through piles of dictionaries to find just
- the right word to complete your crossword. The Daily Crossword will
- do all of the searching for you, and if there is no "right" word, it
- will automatically back-track, remove a word and continue on from
- there until the crossword is completed. All you have to do is select
- a dictionary and a lattice, and then tell The Daily Crossword to go
- to work. Sit back, relax, and enjoy watching The Daily Crossword
- doing what it does best.
-
- 3.2.ON SCREEN SOLVING OF THE CROSSWORD.
- If you enjoy solving crosswords on paper, then even more you will
- enjoy solving them "on screen". No need to search through a list of
- clues. The Daily Crossword knows all the clues, and it will display
- the ACROSS and DOWN clues as you move your focus from square to
- square. A "cheat" key allows you to peek at the answer, one letter
- at a time if the going gets too hard, and if you run out of time,
- you can save your partial solution and come back to it later.
-
- 3.3.PRINTOUT OF THE LATTICE, CLUES AND SOLUTION.
- If you are creating crosswords for publication, then you will
- want a printed copy. The Daily Crossword allows you to print any or
- all of the prinouts mentioned above. It provides fine control over
- the format of the clues, in terms of the number of columns per page,
- the number of character positions per column, and the number of
- lines per page. Any printer able to emulate the EPSON 8 pin graphics
- mode will produce crisp clear printouts suitable for publication.
-
- 3.4.FACILITIES FOR MAINTAINING A POOL OF LATTICE DESIGNS.
- The Daily Crossword comes complete with a selection of ready to
- use lattice designs. Select the lattice you want to use from this
- pool, or design your own. As well as creating new lattice designs,
- you can amend existing designs, and even delete designs which you do
- not like. Lattices may be any square or rectangle up to 47 x 47
- squares.
-
- 3.5.FACILITIES FOR MAINTAINING A POOL OF DICTIONARIES.
- The shareware version of The Daily Crossword has an English
- dictionary of almost 8000 words, while the registered version has a
- dictionary of over 30000 words. It is currently possible to select
- from up to 70 dictionaries, and this feature will be put to greater
- use as more dictionaries become available.
-
- Dictionary maintenance facilities currently provided are:-
- 3.5.1.CREATE NEW DICTIONARIES.
- Creating a new dictionary is as simple as thinking up a
- suitable name and typing it in. The Daily Crossword takes care
- of all of the housekeeping for you.
-
- 3.5.2.ADD WORDS AND CLUES TO NEW OR EXISTING DICTIONARIES.
- A simple data entry screen provides a very straightforward
- method of adding new words.
-
- 3.5.3.AMEND OR DELETE EXISTING DICTIONARY ENTRIES.
- Existing words may have their clues altered, or multiple
- clues may be entered for each word. Alternatively, an existing
- word may be removed entirely by deleting its clue.
-
- 3.5.4.BACKUP AND RESTORE FUNCTIONS FOR THE CURRENT DICTIONARY.
- If you are extending dictionaries, or building new ones,
- you will realise that you are building a valuable resource,
- and will want to safeguard it. Complete Backup and Restore
- facilities are provided to allow the transfer of a copy of the
- currently selected dictionary to one or more diskettes on
- either drive A or B.
-
- 3.5.5.DISPLAY OF THE STATISTICS OF A DICTIONARY.
- Watch your dictionary grow. You can see the total number of
- words, the number having each of the 26 starting letters, and
- the total for each word length from 3 to 15.
-
- 3.6.DICTIONARY MARKING TO PREVENT CONSTANT REUSE OF THE SAME WORDS.
- When a crossword design is completed, the words used are marked
- in the dictionary to reduce the chance of their reuse in subsequent
- designs. This makes it most unlikely that The Daily Crossword will
- ever produce the same result twice.
-
- 3.7.SPECIAL WORD FEATURE FOR PERSONAL GREETINGS, OR ADVERTISING SLOGANS.
- If a lattice is designed so that it has just one word having more
- than the normal maximum of 15 letters, then it will search for a
- special word. This word should have been entered using the Special
- Word feature before using the Make function, and may contain any
- group of words desired. (no spaces please).
-
- 4.LIMITATIONS.
- All screen output is done in the VGA high definition mode (640x480),
- and an error message will be received if an attempt is made to run the
- program on a system which is not able to emulate this mode. 512K of RAM
- is recommended, and 1 Meg of hard disk space will suffice.
-
