- SUMMARY
- Stunning images from around the world in SuperVGA color! A coded puzzle
- game, for those who find ordinary puzzle games too easy. Multiple levels
- of difficulty. Hall of fame for your best scores. Save puzzles, solution
- hints, simple mouse interface, and much more! Designed to use all major
- SVGA boards with VESA drivers in 800 x 600 mode, but also will work on VGA.
- All puzzles are original photography, especially selected for these puzzles.
-
- Due to space limitations, the puzzles with the distributed shareware
- version work only in VGA 320x200 mode. An SVGA image is available as a
- separate file PUZSVG.ZIP.
-
- Requirements
-
- MicroSoft Compatible Mouse
- For VGA images: VGA Color Monitor and Card 640K Memory
- For SuperVGA images:
- SVGA Color Monitor and Card 1Mb Memory
- VESA compatible BIOS or TSR driver installed
-
- SuperVGA Puzzle automatically makes use of EMS or XMS memory if it
- finds it. Drivers such as QEMM or EMM386 are recommended. If you also use
- windows, be sure that memory is available to DOS programs.
-
-
- SOLVING A PUZZLE
-
- The main menu lets you choose the display type you want to use. Separate
- puzzle images are provided for each type, so that best use can be made of
- the VGA and SVGA formats.
-
- CRYPTIK comes with several puzzles, and you can purchase more later.
- When you choose a puzzle, you then can decide how many pieces you want. At
- first, try the default values, then experiment.
-
- The puzzle you choose is encoded to show squares containing its major
- colors, then the pieces are jumbled. The program then prepares the puzzle
- for you. You need to match the colors to restore the image. You'll see the
- original Use the left mouse button to click on a piece. Move the mouse, and
- press the right button to place the piece. Several things may happen:
-
- 1. If it's the correct piece, you'll hear a short confirming sound, and the
- cursor shifts to the piece that was shifted.
-
- 2. If the current piece is incorrect, but you bumped a piece to the correct
- position, you'll hear a different sound.
-
- 3. If neither piece is now correctly place, the cursor remains in the new
- place.
-
- 4. If both the moving and bumped pieces are now in their correct positions,
- you'll hear a double confirmation. No piece is actively selected.
-
- 5. If you try to move a piece to a position that already has a correct piece
- in it, you'll get a beep.
-
- Continue to pick up and place pieces until the puzzle's done. Too simple?
- Try again, but use a 30 by 40 piece puzzle this time! When you complete a
- puzzle, you'll get a score based on the number of moves you made, and the
- number of pieces involved. You lose points for peeking at the whole image,
- or using the automatic placement features (F7, F8). These penalties are
- small, though.
-
- A major source of bonus points is for 'exposing' the puzzle. In order to
- reveal a piece, all surrounding pieces must be properly placed. You get
- points for each piece so exposed. Thus you get more points if you solve
- large sections of the puzzle, rather than making smaller placements in many
- areas.
-
- There are some additional aids you can get by using the function keys:
-
- F1 Help -- summary of help keys
- F2 Grid -- turn grid on & off
- F3 Completed picture -- take a peek at the whole image
- Use this to help you place a piece.
- F4 Reduced image -- shows a reduced copy of the puzzle
- Use this to help you place a piece.
- F5 Incorrect pieces -- Shows only the pieces that remain to be placed.
- This is particularly helpful near the end.
- F6 Correct pieces -- Shows correctly placed pieces.
- F7 Proper to current -- Moves the correct piece to current location
- F8 Current to proper -- Moves the current piece to correct location
-
- F10 Quit
-
- Alt S -- toggle sound
-
- Mouse:
-
- Click on a piece, move to position & right click to drop it
-
-
- SAVING
- You can save any puzzle by pressing F10. This writes a small file to your
- disk that remembers your current position. You can start from this point, by
- choosing Saved Puzzles from the main menu.
-
- The saved puzzle format uses the .SVC extension. It does not contain the
- actual image. Only one puzzle can be saved for each name. However, you can
- easily save additional puzzles by renaming the files or moving them to
- another directory. Remember to rename them before using.
-
-
- ERRORS & SETUP
- Due to the bewildering array of possible combinations of SuperVGA cards,
- monitors and computers, you may encounter a problem in setup that we were
- unable to test. If you do, the following may be helpful. If you still have
- difficulties, contact us by phone (see registration form), or on CompuServe.
-
- The following are some common problems, and solutions: (We assume that you
- have an SVGA card if you're trying to use an SVGA image. If you have only
- a VGA card, you cannot use these images.)
-
- *** Program won't run --
- Type out the file PUZ.LOG to see if there's enough memory. The program
- requires about 200-400K of memory to run the VGA versions, about 1 Mb to run
- the SVGA puzzles. The log shows how much memory is available. If there
- isnt enough, you may need to adjust the memory managers that you are using
- (this is often the case if you are running Windows, or EMM386). Check your
- user manuals to be sure that other programs can access the amount of memory
- that you have installed.
-
- *** '*.SVG not valid'
- You dont have any Super VGA files available. This occurs if you try to run
- the program without obtaining the SuperVGA images. For space
- considerations, SuperVGA Puzzle is made available in 2 modules. You should
- be able to run the VGA version.
-
- *** "Requires Super VGA card. None detected"
- No driver for your SVGA card was detected. Check the documentation and the
- disk that came with your SuperVGA card. Usually this requires adding a line
- to either your autoexec.bat or config.sys file that loads the SuperVGA
- driver when you start your computer.
-
- *** Screen goes black after choosing a puzzle
- Check that you have an extended memory driver installed. (The particular
- device driver must be compatible with the XMS 2.0 specification. Microsoft
- HIMEM.SYS and or QEMM 6.0 are two examples) . Without these, the program may
- not be able to access the memory it needs.
-
-

- Other Formats
- -------------
- If you have other images you wish to use, you may be able to use them in
- SuperVGA Puzzle.
-
- First, you'll need to convert to PCX format. If you need help doing this,
- contact Cascoly. Once you have a PCX picture, you just need to change the
- extension to .VGA or .SVG depending on the resolution of the picture.
