  4.                                                                     THE  ELECTROSCOPE

  7. The ELECTROSCOPE is a device used to measure the presents of small electrical charges.
  8. This device can be used to test for the presents of Static Electricity. 
  9.  
  10. To build this project you will need the following material:
  11.  
  12. 1) a Glass Jar with a wide mouth
  13. 2) a piece of #12 copper wire or a Cloths hanger
  14. 3) a 1/4" piece of plywood to fit over the top of the Jar or a Plastic lid
  15. 4) a sheet of Aluminum Foil
  16.  
  17. Bend the wire as shown in the picture and put two pieces of  Aluminum  Foil  as shown  in the
  18. picture.  When  installing  the  Aluminum  Foil  on the wire,  fold the  ends  loosely  around  the
  19. wire. Take some  Aluminum Foil and  make a 2 inche ball. Place the ball at the end of the wire
  20. as shown in the picture.  Take  a  piece  of Wool,  Carpet,  or  Seat  Cover  and  rub  it on the 
  21. Aluminum Ball. The two pieces of Aluminum foil should move away from each other, indicating
  22. the presents of Electricity.  The  two  pieces  of  foil  move away from each other because the 
  23. electrical  charge  on  both pieces are the same. The  Laws  of  Physics says  that,  " Electrical
  24. charges of the same polarity, oppose each other."
