  1. BURIED IN TIME DEMO                                             
  2.                                     
  3. MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.1 INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS
  4.  
  5. Welcome to the interactive preview for Buried in Time, An Epic Time 
  6. Travel Adventure. We'd like your experience with this disc to be a 
  7. smooth one, so we've enclosed installation instructions below to help 
  8. you get the demo up and running easily. Please take a moment to review 
  9. these and make sure you're comfortable with the installation before 
  10. proceeding.

  12. Note: For easiest reading of this file, turn on Word Wrap by clicking 
  13. the mouse on "Edit", pulling down to Word Wrap, and releasing the mouse.

  16. Step 1:
  17.  
  18. Insure that SmartDrive is loaded into your autoexec.bat file, and that 
  19. it is running. From the c: prompt, 1) type smartdrv to get status info, 
  20. or 2) edit autoexec.bat, and check for a statement similar to: 
  21. LH c:\dos\smartdrv.
  22.  
  23. Step 2:
  24.  
  25. There are two ways to install this demo: a) with Program Manager, and 
  26. b) with File Manager.
  27.  
  28. A) WITH PROGRAM MANAGER
  29.  
  30. 1) From the File Menu, select Run.
  31. 2) Click on Browse.
  32. 3) Choose Drive d: (or whatever letter you have used to designate your 
  33.    CD-ROM drive).
  34. 4) Click on the file bitsetup.exe.
  35. 5) Select OK.
  36. 6) Select OK again. The install program runs.
  37. 7) During this setup procedure, if you do not already have Video for 
  38.    Windows installed, be sure to select this option.
  39. 8) When the installation is complete, you have the option to restart your 
  40. computer. This is necessary in order for the Video for Windows to work.

  42. B) WITH FILE MANAGER
  43.  
  44. 1) Under the Windows Program Manager, Open the Main program group.
  45. 2) Double-click the File Manager icon.
  46. 3) Open the window for your CD-ROM drive.
  47. 4) Double-click on bitsetup.exe and follow on-screen instructions.
  48. 5) During this setup procedure, if you do not already have Video for 
  49.    Windows installed, be sure to select this option.
  50. 6) If you receive the MCI Error message, see the explanation and solution 
  51.    below.
  52. 7) When the installation is complete, you have the option to restart your 
  53.    computer. This is necessary in order for the Video for Windows to work.

  55. Step 3:
  56.  
  57. When you are ready to run the Demo, Open the "Buried In Time" Group Icon 
  58. that has been created by the setup procedure. Double-click the "Interactive 
  59. Preview" Icon, and ENJOY!

  62. POSSIBLE ERROR MESSAGES
  63.  
  64. If, while running the interactive preview, you receive the following 
  65. message:
  66.  
  67. MCI Error
  68. "This AVI file is too big to be played in the selected VGA mode."
  69.  
  70. Don't panic. It is caused by Video For Windows trying to display an AVI 
  71. file in full screen mode. This is easily corrected by changing the 
  72. drivers default setting from Full Screen to Window. Just Select OK to 
  73. the error message and press Esc (the escape key).
  74.  
  75. Then you need to change your system configuration in the following manner:
  76. 1) Open the Main Group Icon.
  77. 2) Double-click the Control Panel Icon.
  78. 3) Double-click the Drivers Icon.
  79. 4) Select [MCI] Microsoft Video for Windows.
  80. 5) Click Setup. Select Video Mode: Window. (Not Full Screen).
  81. 6) Insure that "Skip Video Frames If Behind" is also selected here.
  82. 7) Click Set Default.
  83. 8) Click Close.
  84. 9) Close the Main Icon Group.

  86. POSSIBLE SOUND PROBLEM
  87.  
  88. This demo uses a great deal of digitized sound. If you are experiencing 
  89. popping when sound is playing, you need to increase the amount of memory 
  90. that MCI uses to buffer sound. To change this, select Drivers in your 
  91. Control Panel, and select "[MCI] Sound" from the list of drivers presented. 
  92. Click on the Setup button, set the seconds to 9, and click OK.

  94. POSSIBLE VIDEO PROBLEM
  95.  
  96. If both the video and the sound run poorly, i.e. skip, drop out and lock up, 
  97. there are a few possible solutions:
  98.  
  99. 1) Recheck Smartdrive for correct configuration.
  100. 2) Go through the procedure for the MCI Error message and make sure that 
  101. "Skip Video Frames If Behind" is selected.
  102. 3) Check your video system setup. The demo is optimized for 1,000's of 
  103. colors and won't run as well under the 256 color mode. With 256 colors 
  104. the software must dither down from 1,000's to 256 on-the-fly. This slows 
  105. down the demo considerably.

  108. COPYING THIS DEMO

  110. This demo may be copied freely. Please make sure to copy the entire folder 
  111. and its files, otherwise the demo will not function properly.
