B // GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING NOTES
_______________________________________________________________________
The following Sound and Video cards have been tested with Z: Steel
Soldiers using the latest drivers available from the respective
hardware manufacturer. Unfortunately we CANNOT guarantee the following
cards work as everyday configurations may differ from our test
configurations!
Z: Steel Soldiers will only work correctly on video cards which are
100% DirectX8 compliant. It may function on cards with older drivers,
but it is very likely that compromises in display quality or speed will
be made as older cards will not support all of the features which are
required by the game. You may experience problems such as crashing,
corrupted textures and surfaces and slow performance.
We strongly suggest that you do not run any other applications when
playing Z: Steel Soldiers and not to ALT+TAB out of the game as you may
experience errors.
a | DIRECTX PROBLEMS
If you are experiencing sound or video problems using DirectX8, connect
to the DirectX web site for the latest troubleshooting information:
1) Connect to http://support.microsoft.com/support/directx.
2) Then click HAVING PROBLEMS WITH DIRECTX8.
b | WINDOWS 2000 DRIVERS
Z: Steel Soldiers (and most other D3D games) will not work with the
drivers which are installed by Windows 2000 for the majority of video
cards. You will need to install the latest drivers before you will be
able to play the game. In general, you still experience problems with
drivers designed for Windows 2000 over those designed for Win 9x.
c | MOUSE DRIVERS
Z: Steel Soldiers is not compatible with the Logitech drivers v9.27.
d | LAPTOP SYSTEMS
Because of the limitations of laptop system hardware configurations we
cannot therefore guarantee full compatibility with all types that are
currently available.
e | POST INSTALL SYSTEM HARDWARE MODIFICATION
When any alteration is made to your system hardware specifications, we
recommend a reinstall of both Z: Steel Soldiers and DirectX. This will
ensure that no subsequent errors occur due to possible incurred hardware
conflicts.
_______________________________________________________________________
C // VIDEO CARDS
_______________________________________________________________________
Z: Steel Soldiers will only work correctly on video cards which are
100% DirectX8 compliant.
It may function on cards with older drivers, but it is very likely that
compromises in display quality or speed will be made as older cards will
not support all of the features which are required by the game.
If you experience any of the following problems, your video card driver
may need updating:
* Crashes when starting up.
* Corrupted textures: garbage pixels appearing on surfaces; unexpected
bright flashy colours.
on the screen; incorrect textures on surfaces.
* Illegible fonts.
* Unusually slow performance.

D // SOUND CARDS
_______________________________________________________________________
If you experience audio problems, please be sure to check you have
correctly installed and setup your soundcard with the latest drivers
from the Sound Card manufacturer. In theory, any sound card which is
compliant with DirectX8.0 should work with Z: Steel Soldiers.
Please note that some of the onboard or older chipsets may have an
impact on performance.
We do not recommend playing Z: Steel Soldiers (or indeed any 3D game)
using onboard sound systems as it can lead to a downgrade in performance
of the game.
If you are still experiencing some audio problems, here's a few
suggestions:
1) Be sure your speakers or earphones are plugged into
the right socket and turned on.
2) Be sure you are using the latest sound driver
available. To obtain the latest sound driver, contact
your sound card manufacturer.
3) Be sure that your system's volume control is not
muted and is turned up.
4) Verify that your system can play .wav files:
a) Click the START button, point to
SETTINGS, and then click CONTROL PANEL.
b) Then double-click the SOUNDS icon.
c) Try to play a .wav file
If your system cannot play a .wav file:
a) On the Windows desktop, right-click the
MY COMPUTER icon, and then click PROPERTIES.
b) Then click the DEVICE MANAGER tab, and make
sure the VIEW DEVICES BY TYPE button is selected.
c) Then click SOUND, VIDEO, and GAME CONTROLLERS,
and look for your sound card.
If you don't have a sound card, contact your equipment
dealer to obtain one.
If your system can play a .wav file:
a) Start Z: Steel Soldiers.
b) Then click OPTIONS from the MAIN MENU or INGAME
MENU.
c) Then click SOUND.
d) Then make sure none of the slider-bars are to
the far left.

DirectX Issues
a | DIRECT X INTRODUCTION
DirectX from Microsoft is basically a program interface for creating and
managing graphic images and multimedia effects in games such as Z: Steel
Soldiers and is a required resource for the game to run correctly.
The DirectX installation program is supplied with Z: Steel Soldiers to
ensure that your computer system complies with the minimum requirements
of the game.
Direct3D, DirectSound and DirectInput (components of DirectX) are
utilised by Z: Steel Soldiers to handle 2D/3D display, sound and
controller devices respectively. If you encounter any video, sound or
controller related problems with the game then please confirm initially
that you are using the very latest available drivers to ensure complete
compatibility.
Please refer to the DX Diagnostics section later in this readme for
information on how to achieve this.
b | DIRECT X INFORMATION / MICROSOFT INFORMATION
DirectX is an extension to your existing operating system and is
produced by Microsoft Corporation and is not a product of EON Digital
Entertainment or The Bitmap Brothers. During an initial installation or
an update of DirectX it may be possible that this process affects the
workings of other programs or hardware components that you have within
your system. This is in no way linked to Z: Steel Soldiers but can be
known to occur after a DirectX install completes certain hardware and
software driver updates. If you do encounter any problems whatsoever
after a DirectX installation please refer to the Microsoft Corporation
web site at www.microsoft.com/directx for further details.
Note: If you have difficulties installing DirectX through the
Z: Steel Soldiers install procedure please update DirectX manually
by running the 'Dxsetup.exe' file located on the game CD.
c | DIRECT X DIAGNOSTICS
The DirectX Diagnostic Utility (DXDiag) that is comprised within DirectX
8 will enable you to establish individual hardware components within
your Windows system in order to verify their compatibility. If any
components are non-compliant please contact your hardware manufacturer
primarily for possible software driver updates. In all situations we
recommend that you update any system drivers for your devices directly
from the guidelines that are indicated by your hardware manufacturer. It
is also possible to perform basic DirectX driver tests on the main
hardware components within your computer. From the Windows start bar:
* Select 'Start'.
* Select 'Run...'.
* Select 'Open' and in the text box type 'dxdiag'.
* Select 'OK'.
* When DXDiag has evaluated your system you will see a text box
detailing your system information.
* Locate the gadget 'Save All Information' and click on it to save the
data as a text file (you will be prompted for a name to assign to this
file and a destination folder).
* View the file using the Notepad program located within your Windows
START \ PROGRAMS \ ACCESSORIES submenu.
* In the DXDiag text file the Display Devices section indicates the
version and date of your videocard drivers. If these indicate FINAL
RETAIL or CERTIFIED respectively it is DirectX compliant. Please note
that if your system has two independent display devices you may have to
determine this in the Display2 section to match your Z: Steel
Soldiers display device selection.
* In the DXDiag text file the Sound Devices section indicates the
version and date of your soundcard drivers. If these indicate FINAL
RETAIL or CERTIFIED respectively it is DirectX compliant.
* In the DXDiag text file the Input Devices section indicates the
version and date of your game controller drivers. If these indicate
FINAL RETAIL or CERTIFIED respectively it is DirectX compliant.
* If your components are compliant and you are still experiencing
problems it is most probable that the error is not DirectX related.
Please contact the EON Digital Entertainment technical support
(details under the section 'Technical Support' at the bottom of this
readme or in the manual) for further advice in this case.
d | DIRECT3D
The Direct3D component of DirectX determines how 3D accelerated graphics
are displayed in Z: Steel Soldiers. If you are experiencing video
problems with your video card there is a possibility that the chipset
or drivers are not fully compliant with Direct3D. For further details
please visit the Microsoft web site for troubleshooting advice or
alternatively contact your hardware vendor.
e | DIRECTSOUND
The DirectSound component of DirectX determines how sound is played
within Z: Steel Soldiers. If you are experiencing audio problems with
your soundcard there is a possibility that the software drivers are not
fully compliant with DirectSound. It is highly likely that you will
require a driver update. For further details on this please contact
your hardware vendor.
Microsoft DirectSound3D Support
Z: Steel Soldiers automatically supports enhanced audio through
DirectSound3D for improved directional effects under compliant
hardware accelerated sound devices.
External Sound Control Systems
Some systems incorporate sound control programs that have to be
configured separately from the standard Windows sound mixer. If you
experience any problems customising sound within Z: Steel Soldiers
please consult the documentation that was supplied with your sound
device.
