===========================================================================
4) PERFORMANCE ISSUES AND TROUBLESHOOTING
===========================================================================
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
a) Memory Tips
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
WINDOWS 95/98/ME MEMORY
The NBA Live 2001 Demo requires 32 MB RAM and Virtual Memory Enabled. We
advise that you let Windows 95/98/ME manage the amount of virtual memory
automatically (the default setting), and that you have at least 70 MB free
hard disk space after installation.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
b) Sound Tips
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
WINDOWS 95/98/ME SOUND
The NBA Live 2001 Demo requires a sound card with DirectSound support. If
your sound card driver does not have DirectSound support you may experience
choppy or stuttering sound, or sound that cuts in and out. If your sound
card driver does not support DirectSound, we recommend obtaining updated
drivers from your sound card manufacturer.
INSTALLED SOUND CARD, BUT THERE IS NO SOUND
Make sure your speakers or headphones are plugged into the appropriate jack
and the volume control is turned up.
GENERAL SOUND CARD INFORMATION
During DirectX installation, the DirectX setup program will attempt to
install a sound driver which has DirectSound support for your sound card.
If your sound card driver does not support DirectSound, the DirectX setup
program will attempt to replace your existing sound card driver.
Please consult your sound card manufacturer for updated drivers if
DirectSound drivers are not available for your sound card in DirectX 8.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
c) Game Controller Tips
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A Windows 95/98/ME compatible mouse is required to navigate through the
front end screens and menus of the NBA Live 2001 Demo. It is also required
to operate the Pause Menu and Instant Replay during gameplay.
GRAVIS GAMEPAD AND 4 BUTTON CONTROLLERS
Although the NBA Live 2001 Demo supports multiple buttons when using a
single controller, you are limited to 2-button support when using two
gamepads (or other 4-button controllers) with a Y-cable adapter.
MICROSOFT SIDEWINDER DUAL STRIKE
In order to use the Microsoft SideWinder Dual Strike in the NBA Live 2001
Demo, you must set it to "Joystick Mode".
To set the "Joystick Mode" option:
1. Open Control Panel, then doubleclick on Gaming Options.
2. Click on SideWinder Dual Strike, then Properties.
3. In the Dual Strike Properties dialog, click on the tab marked "Settings".
4. In the left column, click on "Joystick Mode". When being asked to save
the current scheme, enter a file name and click the Save button.
5. Click on OK to close the Dual Strike properties dialog.
6. Click on OK to close Gaming Options.
JOYSTICK CALIBRATION IN WINDOWS 95/98/ME
You must calibrate your joystick from the Control Panel for the joystick
to be recognized within the game. To install or calibrate your joystick
in Windows 95/98/ME, access the Control Panel, and launch the Gaming Options
applet. Note that some gaming devices use their own applets or software
for installation and calibration.
GRAVIS GRIP USERS
- Make sure the Gravis MultiPort is connected to the joystick port
correctly.
- Make sure the Gravis MultiPort switch is in the left position for GrIP
support.
- Make sure that the Gravis GrIP drivers are installed. If they are not,
please refer to your GrIP documentation for installation instructions.
- Make sure that the Gravis GrIP controls are calibrated under Windows
95/98/ME
To calibrate the Gravis GrIP in Windows 95/98/ME, access the Control Panel
and launch the Game Controllers applet. Once the steps are complete the
green light should activate on the left wing of the Gravis MultiPort.
NOTE: In Windows 95/98/ME, the Gravis GrIP requires the Gameport
Input/Output range to be set to 0201-0201. Otherwise, the GrIP may
stop functioning after the current use upon rebooting, and you may
need to re-install the Gameport and GrIP drivers.
To set your joystick Input/Output Range:
- From the Control Panel, choose the System icon.
- Select the Device Manager tab and double-click the Sound, video and
game controllers option.
- Double-click the Gameport Joystick option and select the Resources tab.
- Make sure the "Use Automatic settings" checkbox is cleared and select
the Change Setting button.
- Change the Input/Output range to 0201-0201.
Some Plug and Play sound cards do not allow this setting to be modified.
Please contact your sound card manufacturer or Gravis for a resolution.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
d) 3D Accelerator Tips
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some Direct3D cards do not support as many features as others. Sometimes
it is a limitation of the card, but sometimes it is a limitation of the
drivers. If something is not working properly, try updating your drivers
first. If your video card manufacturer does not have newer drivers
available, you can also check with the chipset manufacturer (nVidia, 3dfx,
ATI, Matrox, etc.). If there are still some things not working right, you
may try disabling the corresponding Details setting(s) from the menu
within the game. If this doesn't address the problems, contact EA Technical
Support.
If you don't see the name of your card in the 3Dsetup program, it is not
directly supported by the game (although you aren't prevented from using
it). If you experience video problems, you may try disabling Details from
the menu within the game.
HARDWARE GRAPHICS ACCELERATION
The NBA Live 2001 Demo requires the Hardware Graphics Acceleration setting
in Windows 95/98/ME to be set to Full.
To set the Graphics Acceleration setting to Full:
1. Open Display Properties, then click on Settings.
2. Click on Performance.
3. Drag the Hardware acceleration Slider to the rightmost position.
4. Click on Apply.
5. Click on OK and exit Display Properties.
VOODOO2 VIDEO CARDS AND ALT-TAB
Alt-Tab is not supported on video cards based on the Voodoo2 chipset.
This is a driver-related issue and the Voodoo2 manufacturer, 3dfx, has
ceased support for the Voodoo2 chipset.
ATI RAGE PRO AND DISTANT CAMERA VIEWS
From a distant camera view, the heads of the players may appear to have
holes in them. This is a known issue with the ATI Rage PRO where the card
does not render small polygons to improve performance.
KYRO VIDEO CARDS AND SORTING ISSUES
Video cards based on Kyro chipsets (e.g. Kyro, Vivid!, PowerVR3) have
sorting issues which result in background parts being drawn over foreground
parts. To fix this problem and also improve performance in the NBA Live
2001 Demo, you should switch the "Defer Render until Flip" option on.
To switch on the "Defer Render until Flip" option:
1. Open Display Properties, then click on Settings.
2. Click on Advanced, then 3D Optimisation.
3. Click in Direct3D, then select Custom.
4. You will then see the "Advanced Settings field", click on the box
marked "Defer Render until Flip".
5. Click on Apply.
6. Click on OK and exit Display Properties.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
e) Gameplay Performance Tips
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
If gameplay is not as smooth or responsive as desired, there are several
things that can be done to improve performance. In general, your computer's
CPU speed and your video card will be the most important factors impacting
performance, but memory configuration and CD-ROM configuration can also
affect performance. Refer to Memory Tips and CD-ROM tips earlier in this
document.
WINDOWS 95/98/ME PERFORMANCE
To ensure maximum performance, ensure that no other Windows 95/98/ME
applications are running. Look at the Windows Taskbar and close any
applications that are currently running.
DETAIL SETTINGS
To improve speed and responsiveness in gameplay, you can use the "Details"
screen in the Pause menu and Front End to toggle various options on or off.
Your monitor may not support some of the resolutions that your video card
may be able to display. The NBA Live 2001 demo detects the resolutions that
your video card can display, not your monitor. Check your monitor manual
for it's available display resolutions or attempt to change your Windows
desktop resolution to the same resolution to want to achieve. If you change
the resolution in the game via the Display Settings menu and the display
becomes scrambled and illegible, your monitor probably does not support
that resolution.
