  5. This is the What's New file for the WinZip 8.0.
  6.  
  7. (Note: A minor change that was made to the WinZip setup program
  8. in December, 2000, is described at the bottom of this document.)

  11. Major changes in Version 8.0
  12.  
  13. WinZip 8.0 includes significant enhancements for all WinZip
  14. users, whether novice or advanced.  The new Zip and E-Mail
  15. feature zips documents and folders and attaches the Zip file to
  16. an e-mail message without leaving Explorer.  The greatly enhanced
  17. Wizard can now create and update Zip files, as well as extract
  18. and install from MIME and similar encoded files (great for e-mail
  19. attachments). Improvements to the WinZip Classic interface make
  20. it more Windows-like than ever; for example, an optional
  21. Explorer-style toolbar is available, and, when creating or updating
  22. an archive, WinZip automatically stores the same subfolders and
  23. folder information that Windows Explorer would use for a similar
  24. copy operation.  And installing those very popular desktop themes
  25. and screen savers from Internet downloads has always been a
  26. difficult and cumbersome process, but WinZip's new automatic
  27. theme and screen saver installer makes it easy.

  29. Details on these and many other enhancements follow.

  32. Enhanced WinZip Wizard
  33.  
  34. - WinZip Wizard functionality has been extended to allow you to
  35.   create and update Zip files from the Wizard.  After the initial
  36.   Welcome panel, the Wizard displays a new Select Activity panel;
  37.   from here, you specify whether you want to unzip/install,
  38.   update an existing archive, or create a new archive.  Like the
  39.   existing Unzip/Install Wizard, the new Add Wizard is designed
  40.   to make the most common operations easy and convenient.

  42. - The Wizard can now extract and install from MIME and other
  43.   encoded files.  This makes processing of e-mail attachments
  44.   from online service such as AOL and CompuServe easier for
  45.   Wizard users.
  46.  
  47. - The Wizard now supports automatic installation of desktop
  48.   themes and screen savers (see below for more information).

  51. More Windows-like interface
  52.  
  53. - When you click the right mouse button on a file in the
  54.   archive contents list, the context menu now displays any
  55.   associated actions for the type of file selected.  For example,
  56.   right-clicking on a .DOC file (Microsoft Word document) might
  57.   display "Open", "Print", and "New".  As in Explorer, hold down
  58.   the Shift key while clicking the right mouse button to add an
  59.   "Open With ..." choice to the menu.  This menu item allows you
  60.   to choose the application you wish to use to open the selected
  61.   file.

  63. - Inclusion of subfolders when adding, updating, etc., is now
  64.   automatic and mirrors Explorer's treatment of subfolders.  You
  65.   no longer have to check the "Include subfolders" checkbox;
  66.   instead, WinZip determines when to include subfolders using the
  67.   same logic that Explorer does.  Specifically:
  68.  
  69.    1) When individual files are added, WinZip does not look in
  70.       subfolders for files with the same name.
  71.  
  72.    2) When a folder is added, WinZip always adds the contents of
  73.       all its subfolders, just as Explorer always copies all
  74.       subfolders when you copy a folder.
  75.  
  76.   The "Include subfolders" option in the Add dialog box is still
  77.   available if wildcards (* or ?) are used in the filename field.
  78.   This allows you to, for example, zip all *.DOC files in a
  79.   folder tree with a single operation.

  81.   WinZip automatically stores the same path information that is
  82.   copied when using drag and drop or copy and paste in the
  83.   Windows Explorer.

  85. - Optional new "Explorer-style" toolbar buttons are available.
  86.   These Internet Explorer-like buttons are simpler in style than
  87.   the traditional WinZip toolbar buttons and optionally appear
  88.   in gray, changing to full color when the mouse pointer is on
  89.   them.

  91. - WinZip now displays a tooltip when a Zip file is selected in
  92.   Windows Explorer.  The tooltip shows how many files are in the
  93.   archive and displays the archive comment, if there is one.  If
  94.   "View as Web Page" is enabled in Explorer, the information will
  95.   instead appear in the description area of the web page.  The
  96.   Windows Desktop Update (Active Desktop) must be installed and
  97.   WinZip shell extensions enabled in order to use this feature.

  99. - When you click the right mouse button on a file in the archive
  100.   contents list, the pop-up menu now displays only file-related
  101.   actions such as Extract.  This is more consistent with general
  102.   Windows conventions.  Use the Actions or File menu for
  103.   archive-related actions like Virus Scan.

  105. - Under Windows 98 and Windows 2000, WinZip menus now display small
  106.   icons corresponding to the menu items' toolbar buttons.

  109. Desktop theme and screen saver support
  110.  
  111. - WinZip can install desktop themes and screen savers contained
  112.   in Zip files.  To use this feature, simply open a Zip file
  113.   containing a theme or screen saver and click the Install
  114.   button.  WinZip will extract all necessary files to the
  115.   appropriate folder(s) and then run the required system theme or
  116.   screen saver support application to complete installation.
  117.   Theme/screen saver installation is also supported by the WinZip
  118.   Wizard.  See online help ("Install Feature" topic) for complete
  119.   information.

  122. Other changes
  123.  
  124. - Zip and E-Mail adds a new feature to the Windows Explorer
  125.   context menu. To use the feature, simply select files or
  126.   folders in Explorer and choose Zip and E-Mail from the pop-up
  127.   menu. WinZip creates a Zip file containing the selected items
  128.   and attaches it to a new e-mail message. The Zip file is
  129.   automatically deleted when your e-mail program no longer needs
  130.   it.  This feature requires that a supported e-mail application
  131.   such as Outlook be installed.
  132.  
  133. - WinZip can automatically display the Zip comment when opening
  134.   a Zip file that contains a comment.
  135.  
  136. - When the open Zip contains a comment, WinZip displays a
  137.   new icon on the Classic interface status line.  You can
  138.   click the icon to view and edit the comment.
  139.  
  140. - Most of WinZip's major dialogs now have "What's This?" help.
  141.   Click on the question mark in the dialog's title bar, then
  142.   click on a control for quick information about how it's used.
  143.  
  144. - WinZip now displays an animated progress dialog during lengthy
  145.   archive operations and can be minimized during such operations.

  147. - The Miscellaneous tab of the Configuration dialog has several
  148.   new options, allowing you to:
  149.  
  150.     - set the number of recently used files listed in the
  151.       File menu,
  152.     - enable or disable the theme/screen saver installer,
  153.     - automatically show comments when opening Zip files,
  154.     - enable or disable the animated status dialog used
  155.       during long Zip operations, and
  156.     - restore all warning messages that you have previously
  157.       turned off.

  159. - A new option in the System tab of the Configuration dialog
  160.   allows you to control whether dialogs are shown when you drag
  161.   and drop files from Explorer onto an archive or a WinZip
  162.   window.

  164. - The list of recently used files in the Classic mode File menu
  165.   has been enhanced:
  166.  
  167.     - The case and capitalization of files in the list adhere to
  168.       the preferences you have selected for files in the main
  169.       WinZip window.
  170.  
  171.     - WinZip no longer places in the list files that were
  172.       automatically opened from the Windows temporary folder.
  173.       This means that, for example, temporary Zip files created
  174.       by opening e-mail attachments won't clutter the file list.
  175.  
  176. - A new button for Close Archive is available and can be added to
  177.   the toolbar from the toolbar configuration dialog.
  178.  
  179. - If you click the View button and multiple files are selected,
  180.   WinZip will perform the specified action on all selected files;
  181.   previously, WinZip only performed the action on the first
  182.   selected file.  For example, if you click View when two .DOC
  183.   files are selected, both documents will be opened.

  185. - The WinZip Self-Extractor Personal Edition is now a 32-bit
  186.   program exclusively and no longer supports creation of 16-bit
  187.   extractors.
  188.  
  189. - Winzip's Windows extensions are now 32-bit Explorer Shell
  190.   extensions only.  The File Manager extension is no longer
  191.   supported.

  193. - The System tab of the Configuration dialog has an option to
  194.   change WinZip's associated file types.
  195.  
  196. - Miscellaneous improvements to online help.

  199. WinZip Setup change (December, 2000)
  200.  
  201. The change to the setup program does not introduce any changes to
  202. the WinZip program itself, WinZip Self-Extractor Personal Edition,
  203. or WinZip online help.  Only the setup program (SETUP.EXE) is
  204. affected.  SETUP.EXE has been updated to build 3105a; all other
  205. distribution files are the original build (3105).

  207. If WinZip 8.0 has already been successfully installed on your
  208. system, there is no need to reinstall WinZip 8.0.

  210. Details of the change:
  211.  
  212. During WinZip installation, if another program was running but
  213. "not responding" to Windows, Windows did not properly complete
  214. WinZip setup's requests to create Start menu entries.  This
  215. prevented WinZip setup from running to completion.  The setup
  216. program now detects whether or not this situation will occur; if
  217. it will, installation is halted and the setup program informs you
  218. that you must re-start Windows and then re-run the WinZip
  219. installation.
