Release Notes for GEnie for Windows 1.2
Contents
System requirements
Setup instructions
What's New
Thanks to the Beta testers for their many hours of testing,
helpful comments and suggestions for improvements. Some of
the suggestions have been incorporated in this version and
all of them will be reviewed for future versions.
If you're new to GEnie, open GEnie Help right after installing
the software. Help tells how to call GEnie for the first time
and set up your permanent GEnie user ID and password.
------------------------- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
GEnie for Windows requires 2,000,000 bytes of space on the
installation drive and (depending on whether Microsoft's
"MFC" and "ODBC" components already happen to be installed
on your computer) up to 2,000,000 bytes in the Windows and
Windows\System directories.
Before running GEnie for Windows, you must have installed
Windows 3.1. GEnie for Windows also requires a 386-or-later
processor and a Hayes-compatible, MNP-capable modem. The
recommended minimum memory is 4 megabytes. A VGA or better
monitor is also recommended.
If you downloaded the abbreviated (update) form of GEnie
for Windows, version 1.00 Beta or later must be installed and
operable on your computer.
------------------------ SETUP INSTRUCTIONS
1. Disable any anti-virus software that might foil GEnie Setup.
You may re-enable the anti-virus software after installation.
2. Make sure you have at least 200,000 bytes free on the disk
that contains the Windows directory. You may need up to
4,000,000 bytes there (see above).
3. Run A:\SETUP. (Substitute B: or C:\DL\ or whatever is
appropriate for Windows to locate GEnie's SETUP.EXE program.)
4. Setup displays:
-- Choose OK to accept the default GEnie location,
or enter a new path below.
Name a directory that GEnie for Windows can have all to itself.
If a version of GEnie for Windows is already installed, Setup
recommends its directory.
5. If Setup detects a prior version of GEnie for Windows on
your computer, you may continue using your old Filing Cabinet,
To-Do list, and Address Book, or have Setup install new, empty
files. Setup offers two choices:
( ) Transfer your current working files
( ) Install new (empty) data files
If you choose "Transfer", Setup copies your old files into the
new GEnie for Windows directory. If you're updating in-place,
Setup doesn't copy the files, since they're already there.
6. Setup may display:
-- Should Setup create a "GEnie" program item?
You may start GEnie for Windows by double-clicking its icon
in Program Manager (or on the Norton Desktop) if you answer
Yes. (Or, you may create the program item yourself later.)
7. Restart Windows or reboot, as recommended by Setup, before
running GEnie for Windows.
8. If Setup updated an existing FE.INI file, it left your
mail and software-library download-directory settings alone.
If you installed the update in a new directory, and want mail
and software-library downloads to go to the GEnie for Windows
directory, you may wish to revisit those settings.
9. Setup creates a cumulative log file (GENIEINS.LOG) in your
Windows directory. If you have trouble installing GEnie for
Windows, you might submit your log for scrutiny.
If you don't already have a GEnie login ID and password, GEnie
for Windows calls a special "Join GEnie" phone number. For
best results:
* Maximize (make as large as possible) both the GEnie for
Windows window and the terminal window inside it.
* When GEnie asks how wide the screen is, answer 77.
* Peruse the GEnie for Windows help file! It has a topic
just for new GEnie users.
* As soon as you learn the correct phone number for GEnie
subscribers, record it on the Connection Settings screen
(File | Settings | Connection).
-------------- WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.2 remedies assorted and sundry glitches. At users'
request, Help has been greatly improved. The filing cabinet
now lists more information about each letter and library file.
And, you can now pause and restart terminal-mode displays, such
as Real-Time Conferences, by typing control-S and control-Q,
respectively. (Those are traditional terminal-program keys.)
Known problems:
When uploading a file to GEnie, you must take special
precautions with the file's Long Description. Press Enter at
the end of each line, and limit lines to 80 characters.
The "Billing" window and some other windows disappear too soon,
before you've had a chance to read what they say. You can
"outsmart" GEnie for Windows by turning on the capture file
(Online | Terminal | Activate Capture) before choosing an
option that opens one of these shy windows. Deactivate the
capture file when the window closes. Bring up the capture file
in Windows Notepad or Windows Write to read it.
If you install new software that uses Microsoft ODBC, you may
encounter problems with the GEnie for Windows "filing cabinet",
which also uses ODBC, if your new software doesn't install a
complete set of new ODBC files. Your best bet is to ask your
new software's Setup program NOT to install ODBC stuff unless
you know you'll need it. If you have problems, stop by the
GENIEWIN roundtable (page 1455) on GEnie for help.
