  9. This is the boot disk maker and patch utility disk for Version 1.00 of
  10. Alien Legacy.  This README file contains extra information about the boot
  11. disk maker, patch utility and Alien Legacy in general.  It also contains
  12. a reprint of the information listed on the insert included with this
  13. disk.
  14.  
  15. The patch will update Alien Legacy to version 1.01.  This updated version
  16. corrects all identified technical issues in version 1.00 of Alien Legacy.
  17. Please be sure to read this entire readme file for additional information
  18. not covered in the Trouble Shooting section of the game's manual.

  32. 1.  INSTALL UTILITY DISK LIMITATIONS
  33.  
  34. If you have a version of Alien Legacy other than Version 1.00, you can
  35. still use the boot disk maker, but do not use the patch included on this
  36. disk.  If you are uncertain of what version you have, check the floppy
  37. disk labels on the game disks.  Once the patch has been successfully
  38. installed and applied, you will have Version 1.01.
  39.  
  40. Instructions on how to use the boot disk maker are provided in the
  41. section titled CREATING A BOOT DISK.  To install and apply the patch,
  42. please refer to the section titled INSTALLING THE PATCH.

  45. 2.  PLAYING OLD SAVED GAMES
  46.  
  47. If you have saved games from Alien Legacy Version 1.00, and have
  48. installed the patch from this Install Utilities disk, you should be able
  49. to continue the saved games using Version 1.01.  The patch will not be
  50. able to correct any problems caused by corrupted game files or corrupted
  51. saved games.  
  52.  
  53. If you encounter problems restoring your saved games with version 1.01, 
  54. you should make a boot disk and play the game from the boot disk, (see 
  55. section 6).  The boot disk will resolve most conflicts.
  56.  
  57. If you still encounter a lockup, you should backup your saved games to a
  58. floppy disk and reinstall the game and patch in the boot disk environment.
  59. To backup the saved games, type:
  60.  
  61. CD\Sierra\alien\saves [enter]
  62. Copy . a: [enter]
  63.  
  64. After you copy your saved games to a floppy disk, delete the game's dir-
  65. ectory from your hard drive.  Now boot your computer with the bootdisk and
  66. reinstall the game and the patch. 
  67.  
  68. Once you have finished installing the game, copy the saved games from the
  69. floppy disk into the \Sierra\Alien\Saves directory on your hard drive. You
  70. can do this by typing:
  71.  
  72. copy a:\. c:\sierra\alien\saves [enter]
  73.  
  74. If you are still unable to restore saved games, the saved games are likely 
  75. corrupted.  You should restore to a previous saved game or start a new game.
  76.

  78. 3.  SMARTDRIVE DISK CACHING
  79.  
  80. Performance improvements may be obtained by using a disk caching utility
  81. such as SMARTDrive.  It is highly recommended that a disk caching utility
  82. is installed with at least a 512K cache size to speed file operations.
  83. Please consult your MS-DOS documentation or your disk caching utility's
  84. documentation for information about setting up a disk cache on your
  85. computer system.  If you have SMARTDrive available and wish to install
  86. it, create a boot disk using the boot disk maker provided on this disk.
  87. Then, edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the Boot Disk.  (Make sure you are
  88. editing the file on the Boot Disk and not the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on your
  89. hard drive!)  At the end of the file add this line:

  91. C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE c 512 512
  92.  
  93. Reboot using the Boot Disk and you will be ready to play Alien Legacy.
  94.  
  95. There are numerous versions of SMARTDrive and other disk caching software
  96. available.  You may experience some loading problems with certain earlier
  97. versions of SMARTDrive.  If you experience problems related to loading
  98. and saving, or extremely slow disk access during gameplay, try a later
  99. version of SMARTDrive.

  102. 4.  INSTALLING THE PATCH
  103.  
  104. After your Alien Legacy manual and diskettes were printed, we developed a
  105. helpful game "patch" that is included on the "Install Utilities" disk.
  106. Follow the steps listed below to upgrade your installed copy of Alien
  107. Legacy Version 1.00 to Version 1.01.  If you are experiencing problems
  108. using the Install Utilities INSTALL program to install the patch, please
  109. refer to the section titled MANUAL PATCH INSTALLATION.
  110.  
  111. 1.  Install the game as described in the manual pages 7-8.  NOTE:  If you
  112.       already have the game installed you may skip this step.
  113. 2.  Insert the "Install Utilities" disk in the appropriate drive, type
  114.       the drive name (usually A:) and press [Enter].
  115. 3.  Type INSTALL and press [Enter].  Make sure the indicated game
  116.       directory is correct (it should contain Alien Legacy Version 1.00).
  117. 4.  From the Installation Choices menu, select "Install Patch to the
  118.       Indicated Directory."
  119. 5.  From the game directory, type PATCH and press [Enter] to upgrade the
  120.       game.

  122. Starting Alien Legacy
  123.  
  124. To start the game, type AL in the directory where you installed the game
  125. (SIERRA\ALIEN is the default).  If you have difficulties getting the game
  126. to start properly (this is usually due to a lack of free memory
  127. available), please refer to the section titled CREATING A BOOT DISK.

  130. 5.  MANUAL PATCH INSTALLATION
  131.  
  132. If you are experiencing problems using the Install Utilities INSTALL
  133. program to install the patch, the following instructions will allow you
  134. to manually copy the patch to your hard disk drive.
  135.  
  136. 1.  Check your hard disk drive and confirm that you have at least 205K
  137.     (209920 bytes) of disk space available.  You might need more if you
  138.     are using a disk compression utility such as Stacker or
  139.     DoubleSpace/DriveSpace.  Also, make sure that you do not have any
  140.     lost allocation units or other errors on the hard drive.  These
  141.     errors may cause the patch to not install correctly.  To find errors
  142.     on the drive, use CHKDSK.  If any errors exist, they will appear as
  143.     the first line below the Serial Number.
  144.  
  145.     If you have errors, you will need to correct them.  To do this, you
  146.     can use the CHKDSK /F command.  WARNING:  There is a slim chance that
  147.     you may lose data off of the hard drive when attempting to correct
  148.     any errors.  The chance of data loss depends upon the severity of the
  149.     errors on the drive.  Consult your MS-DOS or hard drive maintenance
  150.     utility documentation for more information.  We highly recommend you
  151.     make a back-up of your hard drive and/or back-up any important
  152.     information or documents before attempting to correct hard drive
  153.     errors.

  155. 2.  Copy the two files called PATCH.EXE and PATCH.RTP from the Install
  156.     Utilities disk to the directory where you have Alien Legacy Version
  157.     1.00 installed.  For example, if the Install Utilities disk is in
  158.     drive A: and the game is installed to directory C:\SIERRA\ALIEN, you
  159.     would type:
  160.  
  161.       C: [ENTER]
  162.       CD \SIERRA\ALIEN [ENTER]
  163.       COPY A:\PATCH.EXE [ENTER]
  164.       COPY A:\PATCH.RTP [ENTER]
  165.  
  166. 3.  After the two files have been copied, apply the patch by changing to
  167.     the game directory and starting the PATCH utility.  Continuing with
  168.     the commands listed above, you would type:
  169.  
  170.     PATCH [ENTER]
  171.  
  172.     If the PATCH utility was successful, your copy of Alien Legacy should
  173.     now be Version 1.01.  The game can be started as usual (i.e. by
  174.     typing AL then pressing [ENTER] from the game directory).

  177. 6.  CREATING A BOOT DISK (replaces manual section pages 79-80)
  178.  
  179. If your current system set-up doesn't provide enough free memory to
  180. start the game, try making a boot disk.  A boot disk lets you easily
  181. re-configure your computer's memory for running Alien Legacy without
  182. affecting your current system set-up.
  183.  
  184. Before you start, have a blank or formattable floppy disk for your A:
  185. drive ready.  (Any files on it will be erased.)  Note:  The boot disk
  186. will work only in the A: drive.
  187.  
  188. 1.  Insert the "Install Utilities" disk in the appropriate drive, type
  189.       the drive name (usually A:) and press [Enter].
  190. 2.  Type INSTALL and press [Enter].  Make sure the indicated game
  191.       directory is correct.
  192. 3.  From the Installation Choices menu, select "Make Bootable Floppy
  193.       Disk."  Follow the on-screen instructions carefully.
  194. 4.  When your boot disk is complete and the Installation Choices menu
  195.       reappears, select "Cancel Installation and Return to DOS."
  196.  
  197. Using a Boot Disk
  198.  
  199. To use the boot disk, start (or restart) your computer with the boot
  200. disk in the A: drive, and then start the game.  If the game still will
  201. not run, or the drivers for your mouse or sound card don't load
  202. correctly, you'll need to customize the start-up files manually.
  203.  
  204. Customizing Your Boot Disk
  205.  
  206. To customize a boot disk, you can edit the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
  207. start-up files on the boot disk that the Install program created, or
  208. create a new Boot Disk from scratch.  CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT are
  209. simple text files that you can edit using your DOS Edit utility, the
  210. Windows Notepad or your preferred word processor in its text-only mode.
  211. Warning:  Manually altering the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT start-up
  212. files can be a trial and error process.  When opening a file to edit,
  213. triple-check to MAKE SURE you are working with the files on your boot
  214. disk in the A: drive.  Otherwise, you may change the CONFIG.SYS and
  215. AUTOEXEC.BAT files on your hard drive instead, which in turn may impair
  216. the normal operation of your system.

  220. If you need to customize the boot disk created by the Install program,
  221. compare the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files on your boot disk to the
  222. following examples rather than the ones shown on manual pages 81-82.  The
  223. lines in your start up files will differ according to your system's
  224. drivers and directory names, and the version of DOS you use.  Other
  225. differences may indicate places where you can remove a driver, load it
  226. into upper memory, or change a device switch to use less memory.  As
  227. always, refer to your system reference manuals if unsure about anything.

  249. 7.  CYRIX CPUS
  250.  
  251. Some difficulties have been encountered by users who have Cyrix CPUs
  252. installed in their computer.  The two types of problems that have been
  253. identified are listed below.
  254.  
  255. 1.  The Cyrix processor may have compatibility problems running DOS
  256.     extender programs such as DOS/4GW (Alien Legacy uses DOS/4GW).
  257.  
  258. 2.  Some older BIOS's may have conflicts with Cyrix processors that
  259.     will cause unexplained lockups or other problems.
  260.  
  261. If you are experiencing problems relating to item #1, please call Cyrix
  262. customer support at (800) 462-9749.  They can make arrangements for a
  263. processor upgrade.
  264.  
  265. Beyond replacing the motherboard, there is no known work around for
  266. item #2.
