GEAR-SHIFTING
Manual Transmission
You shift up through the gears in the following order: Reverse, Low,
1st, 2nd, etc. You start the race in 1st gear.
Automatic Transmission
You only have two gears: Low and Drive. You start the race in Drive.
LOOK-AHEAD (Mouse Button 1)
In nearly every camera view, you can adjust where the camera is
looking by holding down the left mouse button and dragging the mouse
in the appropriate direction. The idea is that this will allow you
to look "through" a turn. Looking through a turn is very important
in real-world driving. Letting go of the button snaps the view back
to its correct direction.
POSITION (Ctrl+P)
Shows your current position in the following format:
"Strip #:Quad #:Surface Type (X, Y, Z)"
PAUSE (Pause)
Use that funny Pause key that nobody ever presses. This is different
than the pause menu. It is meant for debugging, but it is kind of
cool to play with. Press the spacebar to single step. Press Pause
again to resume normal play. It is extra cool to get big air, hit
the Pause key, and then fly around the truck while it is floating in
mid-air. Can you say cool screen shots?

4) Troubleshooting
DIRECTX
The Test Drive Off-Road(TM) 3 Demo requires DirectX 7 or later to be installed.
You can download the latest version of DirectX from www.microsoft.com/directx.
In order for your to run this demo, your hardware must be certified
to work with Microsoft DirectX 7. If you are experiencing errors and
crashes within your game, check to see if your hardware is properly
certified. Your system must be 100% compatible with DirectX to
ensure the game will work. Make sure that your hardware has the
correct drivers loaded to play games that require DirectX.
To check the status of DirectX 7 on your computer: Click Start -->
Find --> Files or Folders, and search your C: drive for the file
DXDIAG.EXE. This will run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Check your
Display and Sound tabs for Certified: YES. If either says Certified:
NO, you must contact your computer manufacturer for updated drivers.
Call them and ask for drivers that are certified to work with
DirectX 7. If they cannot provide you with that, your system does
not meet the minimum requirements to run the game.
SOFTWARE CONFLICTS
If your hardware is certified and you still have problems, it may be
due to a software conflict. Close down all open applications and
utilities. From your desktop, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete (just once!) and
"End Task" on all programs listed EXCEPT the one called Explorer.
Your system may not immediately shut down the programs listed. Wait
for Windows to say it cannot close the program automatically. If
this occurs, press "End Task".
GAME CRASHES WITH A PAGE FAULT
This could be for one of many reasons, but the most likely is out-
of-date or incorrect graphics or audio drivers.
First make sure you have installed DirectX 7 (see DIRECTX). Then
make sure you have installed the latest full (not Beta) release
drivers for your hardware. In most cases, these steps will fix the
problem.
SCREEN MODES SUPPORTED
The Test Drive Off-Road(TM) 3 Demo supports two different display resolutions,
320x240 and 640x480. 320x240 is the only mode supported for the
software renderer. 640x480 is the only mode available with D3D
and Glide on all graphics cards.
Voodoo2 SLI mode is also not officially supported by the game.
GAME CONTROLLERS
The game relies on the Windows Game Controllers setup for its
useability and calibration information. (You can select access this
information by clicking on the START button, clicking SETTINGS, then
CONTROL PANEL, and then clicking on the icon labeled GAME
CONTROLLERS.) If the game controller you wish to use is not listed
here, or its status is not "OK", then it will not work in the game.
(a) Microsoft Sidewinder Joysticks
If you have a Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick then please check the
Sidewinder ReadMe that came with your joystick drivers, as there may
be incompatibilities with certain types of sound cards or joystick
ports.
(b) Continual turning of the car in the game
This is normally caused by an out-of-date joystick driver file, or
by an incompatible direct input driver and is most often seen in
Windows 98.
What happens is that the game thinks that the rudder control is
continually pushed over to one side, even if no rudder control is
connected.
Please ensure you have loaded the very latest drivers for your
soundcard, joystick port and joystick. Make sure you have installed
the latest version of DirectX.
Also, you may want to try recalibrating the game controller from the
Windows Control Panel.
Owners of Logitec Wingman Extreme joysticks running Windows 98
should update their joystick drivers from the \drivers\input\logitec
folder. Read the readme.txt file there for instructions on how to
do this.
Another workaround is to setup the stick as a custom joystick, as
specified below.
(c) General Joystick problems and setting up as a custom joystick
If your game controller came with a Windows 95 / 98 driver disk,
then follow the instructions you got with the device to install the
driver software. Make sure you read any documentation that came with
the controller as this will often help you to solve problems that
may be associated with it.
If the game controller didn't come with a driver disk, or if the
driver supplied with the device doesn't seem to work properly, you
should be able to configure it as a custom game controller using the
Windows Game Controllers control panel.
Go to the START menu and select SETTINGS, then select CONTROL PANEL.
Double-click on the GAME CONTROLLERS icon.
You might see your controller listed in the game devices window. If
so, click on it and then click on the REMOVE button. Also remove any
other controllers listed.
You then need to add the joystick. Click on the ADD button and
select [CUSTOM...] from the top of the window.
You'll see a new control panel. Select the number of axes (2 for a
normal stick, 3 for a stick with a throttle, and 4 for a stick with
throttle and rudder controls).
Select the number of buttons (normally 4).
Click on the Special Characteristics box, and select 'IS A FLIGHT
YOKE/STICK.' If your joystick has a 'hat' switch. click on 'HAS A
POINT OF VIEW CONTROL'.
Enter a name for the stick in the box at the bottom of the window,
and click on the OK button.
You should then see the joystick listed in the joystick window with
Ok next to it. Click on the PROPERTIES button, and then click on the
CALIBRATE button and follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate
the stick.
This should set up your Joystick properly.
