  79. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  80. ===================
  81.  
  82. To run Internet Explorer 4.0, your system must meet the following 
  83. minimum requirements:
  84.  
  85. - A 486 with a 66 Mhz processor (Pentium processor recommended)
  86. - For Microsoft Windows 95:
  87.   8 MB of RAM minimum, 16 MB with Active Desktop
  88. á For Microsoft Windows NT:
  89.   16 MB of RAM minimum, 24 MB with Active Desktop
  90. - For Microsoft Windows NT: 
  91.   You must be running Service Pack 3 (or higher)
  92. - 40 to 70 MB of hard-disk space (depending on installation type) 
  93. - Mouse
  94. - Modem
  95. - CD-ROM
  96.  
  97. Using Internet Explorer 4.0 with Virtual Memory
  98. -----------------------------------------------
  99. Internet Explorer requires you to use virtual memory in order to 
  100. run properly. To make sure you are using virtual memory:
  101.  
  102. 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click 
  103.    Control Panel.
  104.  
  105. 2. Double-click the System icon, and then click the Performance tab.
  106.  
  107. 3. Click Virtual Memory.
  108.  
  109. 4. If you are specifying virtual memory settings, clear the 
  110.    Disable Virtual Memory check box. If this check box is selected, 
  111.    Internet Explorer will not run.
  112.  
  113.    TIP: You can set Windows to manage virtual memory for you by 
  114.         selecting the Let Windows Manage My Virtual Memory check 
  115.         box.
  116.  
  117.  
  118. SETUP
  119. =====
  120.  
  121. - WARNING: Do not install any previous version of Internet 
  122.   Explorer over Internet Explorer 4.0. If you need to install 
  123.   an earlier version of Internet Explorer, you must uninstall 
  124.   Internet Explorer 4.0 first.
  125.  
  126. - You should always uninstall your current version of Internet 
  127.   Explorer 4.0 before installing a newer build.
  128.  
  129. - It is recommended that you download Internet Explorer 4.0 to a 
  130.   directory that does not contain any other files and that will not 
  131.   be used for any other purpose. If for some reason you want to 
  132.   uninstall the setup files by clicking the Add/Remove Programs 
  133.   icon and then clicking Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup 
  134.   Files, the download directory will be removed.
  135.  
  136. - Before you install Internet Explorer 4.0, you should disable any 
  137.   scheduled tasks from running that might interfere with the Setup 
  138.   process.
  139.  
  140. Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
  141. --------------------------------
  142. Whether you choose to install over the network or to download 
  143. the installation files to your hard disk, the Setup files are 
  144. copied to your hard disk. This is so you can reinstall more 
  145. quickly if you need to. If you want to reclaim the disk space, 
  146. you can remove the setup directory by double-clicking the Add/Remove 
  147. Programs icon in Control Panel and then clicking Internet Explorer 
  148. 4.0 Setup Files.
  149.  
  150. You cannot install Internet Explorer 4.0 to or run it from a 
  151. network drive. However, you can download it to a network drive. 
  152. To do this, you must map the network drive to a drive letter on 
  153. your computer. You cannot download Internet Explorer 4.0 to a 
  154. UNC path.
  155.  
  156. If Internet Explorer 4.0 appears to stop responding at the end 
  157. of Setup, you need to restart your computer manually. 
  158.  
  159. Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT
  160. -------------------------------------------
  161. NOTE: You must have administrative privileges to install and 
  162. uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes having 
  163. administrative privileges the first time you start your computer 
  164. after installing or uninstalling.
  165.  
  166. You must restart your computer after installing Internet Explorer 
  167. 4.0. This is also true for some add-on components.
  168.  
  169. If you're running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT, you must 
  170. set user permissions to Full Control for the Temporary Internet 
  171. Files folder (cache). The user must have write permission in order 
  172. for files to be stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
  173.  
  174. If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) after 
  175. you install Internet Explorer 4.0, you must specify when prompted 
  176. that you do not want it to overwrite any files that are newer. 
  177. After SP3 is reinstalled, carry out the following steps to update 
  178. the registry:
  179.  
  180. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  181. 2. Type the following: regsvr32 rsabase.dl
  182. 3. Click OK.
  183.  
  184. Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on a Dual-Boot Operating System
  185. -------------------------------------------------------------
  186. If your computer is set up to dual boot between two operating 
  187. systems, you must install Internet Explorer 4.0 in separate 
  188. directories for each operating system. For example, if you are 
  189. running Windows 95 and Windows NT, you might want to install 
  190. Internet Explorer 4.0 in C:\IE95 for Windows 95 and in C:\IENT 
  191. for Windows NT. Do not try to use the same installation of 
  192. Internet Explorer with two operating systems. If you later 
  193. uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0, one of your operating systems 
  194. may be left unbootable.
  195.  
  196. Note also that if you dual boot between two operating systems 
  197. that are configured to share a Program Files folder, and you 
  198. uninstall an add-on component from one of your Internet Explorer 
  199. 4.0 installations, it will be removed from both of them. This is 
  200. because the add-on files are stored in the Program Files folder.
  201.  
  202. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 4.0
  203. ----------------------------------
  204. You can uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 by carrying out the 
  205. following steps:
  206.  
  207. 1. In Control Panel, click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  208. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  209. 3. Follow the instructions on your screen.
  210.  
  211. Cannot Use Registry or ERD Files Created Before 
  212.   Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
  213. -----------------------------------------------
  214. If you install Internet Explorer 4.0 and then restore a Windows 95 
  215. registry that was created before you installed Internet Explorer 4.0, 
  216. or use a Windows NT Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) that was created 
  217. before you installed Internet Explorer 4.0, you may be unable to 
  218. start Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.
  219.  
  220. To resolve this problem, use the Ieremove.exe tool to remove Internet 
  221. Explorer 4.0. For information about how to do so, open the Microsoft 
  222. Knowledge Base at http://www.microsoft.com/kb/default.asp, and then 
  223. see the following articles:
  224.  
  225.   For Windows 95, see Article Q166313,

  231. Adding or Removing the Windows Desktop Update
  232. ---------------------------------------------
  233. To add or remove the Windows Desktop Update, carry out the following 
  234. steps:
  235.  
  236. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  237. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  238. 3. To remove it, click "Remove the Windows Desktop Update component 
  239.    but keep the Internet Explorer 4.0 Web browser."
  240.  
  241.    To add it, click "Add the Windows Desktop Update component from 
  242.    Web site," and then follow the instructions on the screen.
  243.  
  244. NOTE: For this release, clicking "Add the Windows Desktop Update 
  245. component from Web Site" opens the Internet Explorer 4.0 components 
  246. download page so you can download and install the Windows Desktop 
  247. Update. If you have previously downloaded or installed the Windows 
  248. Desktop Update, you can enable it without connecting to the Internet 
  249. by running IE4setup.exe from your local Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup 
  250. folder. When prompted, click Yes to enable the Windows Desktop 
  251. Update, and then choose to upgrade only newer items.
  252.  
  253. Installing Internet Explorer in a Language Different 
  254.   from the Operating System Language
  255. ----------------------------------------------------
  256. If you install a version of Internet Explorer in a language 
  257. different from the language of the operating system you are 
  258. running, the Windows Desktop Update will not be installed.
  259.  
  260.  
  261. USING A LOCAL AREA NETWORK PROXY SERVER OR FIREWALL
  262. ===================================================
  263.  
  264. If your local area network or ISP uses a proxy serveror firewall 
  265. to protect your network from being accessed by other people on the 
  266. Internet, carry out the following steps, which set up your computer 
  267. to gain access to the Internet through a firewall:
  268.  
  269. 1. Run the Internet Connection Wizard:
  270.  
  271.    - Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Internet 
  272.      Explorer, and then click Connection Wizard.
  273.  
  274. 2. Configure your computer to connect to the Internet by using 
  275.    the TCP/IP protocol on your local area network. 
  276.  
  277. 3. When you are prompted for the gateway address, type the IP 
  278.    address (for example, 123.456.789.123) supplied by your 
  279.    network administrator only if your organization uses gateways 
  280.    for routing information over the network.
  281.  
  282.    NOTE: The gateway computer is not the same as the proxy or 
  283.          firewall computer that protects your local area network 
  284.          from the Internet, so do not type your proxy or firewall 
  285.          address here.
  286.  
  287. 4. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click 
  288.    Control Panel.
  289.  
  290. 5. Double-click the Internet icon, and then click the Connection 
  291.    tab.
  292.  
  293. 6. In the Proxy area, select the Connect To The Internet Through 
  294.    A Proxy Server check box.
  295.  
  296. 7. Click Change Proxy Settings.
  297.  
  298. 8. In the first text box, type the HTTP server address for the 
  299.    computer you want to use as the proxy server. In the second text 
  300.    box, type the port number. The following is an example of a proxy 
  301.    server and port number:
  302.  
  303.    http://myproxy.mycompany.com:80
  304.  
  305.    In this example, you would type http://myproxy.mycompany.com in
  306.    the first text box, and 80 in the second text box.
  307.  
  308.    You can use a different proxy server for different types of 
  309.    addresses. However, if you want to use the same proxy for all 
  310.    types of addresses, make sure you select the Use Same Proxy Server 
  311.    For All Addresses check box.
  312.  
  313. 9. In the Exceptions area, click in the text box, and then type the 
  314.    names of the computers, domains, and ports on the Internet that,
  315.    when accessed, will not go through the proxy server. Separate each 
  316.    item you type with a semicolon (;). If you do not know what to type 
  317.    here, see your network administrator.
  318.  
  319.    If you do not want to use the proxy server for local addresses, make 
  320.    sure you select the Do Not Use Proxy For Local (Intranet) Addresses 
  321.    check box. Local addresses are defined as those where the server 
  322.    name does not contain a period (.). For example:
  323.  
  324.    http://internalweb/        is a local address.
  325.    http://www.microsoft.com/  is not a local address.
  326.  
  327.    For Help on these items, click the ? in the title bar, and then 
  328.    click the item.
  329.  
  330. 10. When you have finished changing settings, click OK.
  331.  
  332. 11. Click OK again to close Internet properties.
  333.     If you are running Internet Explorer, you need to restart 
  334.     your computer so that the new proxy settings can take effect.
  335.  
  336. Using the Novell NetWare 32-bit Client
  337. --------------------------------------
  338. If you are using the Novell NetWare 32-bit client with Windows 95, 
  339. add the following registry entry to your system:
  340.  
  341. HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
  342.     DontUseDNSLoadBalancing = (REG_DWORD) 1
  343.  
  344. This setting will ensure correct usage of proxy servers with 
  345. Internet Explorer on your network. This will be fixed in future 
  346. updates.
  347.  
  348. Using Internet Explorer with Socks Proxy Servers
  349. ------------------------------------------------
  350. If you are setting up Internet Explorer with a Socks proxy server, 
  351. you must set it up separately from other proxy information (for 
  352. example, HTTP, FTP, or Gopher). In most cases, this means that all 
  353. other proxy fields should be left blank and the Socks field should 
  354. contain the address of your Socks proxy server. The only exception 
  355. is when you are using a Socks proxy and a different proxy (for example, 
  356. HTTP) on the same connection. If you are having trouble, please contact 
  357. your network administrator for information about Socks and proxy servers.
  358.  
  359.  
  360. HTML DEVELOPERS
  361. ===============
  362.  
  363. Structuring HTML with Framesets
  364. -------------------------------
  365. If you are designing pages with framesets, you must use the 
  366. following HTML structure for the pages to work correctly in 
  367. Internet Explorer 4.0:
  368.  
  369. - A <BODY> tag (or other text or tags that force a BODY) should 
  370.   not appear before a <FRAMESET> tag. If a BODY tag does precede 
  371.   the FRAMESET, the contents of the FRAMESET are discarded and the 
  372.   page will appear blank.
  373.  
  374. - <SCRIPT> and <OBJECT> tags in a page with a <FRAMESET> tag must 
  375.   appear in the <HEAD> section of the page.
  376.  
  377. Using the HTML Layout Control
  378. -----------------------------
  379. Some differences may be experienced when using the HTML layout control with IE4.0. For more information please see http://www.microsoft.com/workshop/author/layout

  381. ActiveX Controls in Internet Explorer 4.0
  382. -----------------------------------------
  383. Because of some architectural changes in Internet Explorer 4.0 that 
  384. were needed to support a wider range of controls more efficiently, 
  385. some ActiveX Controls may not perform exactly as they did in 
  386. Internet Explorer 3.0. A common cause of this is that the control 
  387. was not created as Apartment Model Aware. Many control vendors now 
  388. offer updated controls that work properly with Internet Explorer 4.0. 
  389. If you have any problems with ActiveX Control support in Internet 
  390. Explorer 4.0, contact the control vendor to see if an updated 
  391. version of the control is available that fixes the problem.
  392.  
  393. Problem With Visual Basic 5.0 ActiveX Controls
  394. ---------------------------------------------- 
  395. Some ActiveX Controls created with Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 may 
  396. not function properly in Internet Explorer 4.0, because these controls 
  397. are not Apartment Model Aware. Controls that are created with VB 5.0 
  398. should be rebuilt using the Service Pack available free from Microsoft 
  399. for VB 5.0 and the Control Creation edition of VB 5.0 that allows for 
  400. the creation of Apartment Model Aware Controls.
  401.  
  402.  
  403. JAVA DEVELOPERS
  404. ===============
  405.  
  406. Installing Java Classes
  407. -----------------------
  408. As part of the VM for Java installation, the new class files are 
  409. added to the class path of developer machines. If you install a Java 
  410. development tool after installing Internet Explorer 4.0, please 
  411. run the clspack tool in your Windows directory to put the classes 
  412. on your class path. To create a single Classes.zip file in your 
  413. %WINDIR%\Java\Classes directory that contains all classes stored in 
  414. the package manager, use the following syntax: clspack -auto. This 
  415. option also adds Classes.zip to the CLASSPATH registry key. 
  416.  
  417. Refreshing Java Applets Under Development 
  418.   without Restarting Internet Explorer
  419. -----------------------------------------
  420. Microsoft Visual J++ 1.1 and other development environments have 
  421. previously required the browser to be restarted in order for updated 
  422. classes to be used while debugging. This was because of issues with 
  423. Internet Explorer loading Java classes from the cache rather than from 
  424. any updated classes on the developer's computer. Using Internet Explorer 
  425. 4.0, you can just press CTRL+F5 or CTRL + the Refresh button to 
  426. cause the classes to be reloaded and any updates used.
  427.  
  428. Using Visual J++ with Internet Explorer 4.0
  429. -------------------------------------------
  430. If you use Visual J++, you can install Internet Explorer with or 
  431. without the Windows Desktop Update. If you do choose to install the 
  432. Windows Desktop Update with the browser, you will need to do the 
  433. following:
  434.  
  435. 1. Install Visual Studio SP2.
  436. 2. Modify your project settings as follows:
  437.    a. On the Project menu, click Settings.
  438.    b. Click the Debug tab.
  439.    c. In the Category box, click Browser.
  440.    d. Add the -new switch to the path to the browser. For example:
  441.  
  442.       C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe -new
  443.  
  444. Note that this modification must be made on a per-project basis.

  447.  
  448. NOTE TO FRENCH USERS OF INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0
  449. =============================================
  450.  
  451. In order to comply with French laws on the use of encryption material, 
  452. the following features have been disabled for users in France:
  453.  
  454. - S/MIME support in Outlook Express
  455. - The Microsoft Wallet secure storage feature
  456. - PCT 1.0 support
  457.  
  458. However, SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 support are authorized, and are still 
  459. enabled.
  460.  
  461. KNOWN ISSUES
  462. ============
  463.  
  464. PICS Support Works Differently in Internet Explorer 4.0
  465. -------------------------------------------------------
  466. The Internet Explorer Content Advisor uses PICS (Platform for 
  467. Internet Content Selection) ratings. The PICS functionality 
  468. varies from that in Internet Explorer 3.0 in the following 
  469. instances:
  470.  
  471. - The PICS rating is not used for documents using the file:// 
  472.   protocol.
  473.  
  474. - If you have ratings enabled, you might not be able to view 
  475.   certain items that you've added to your Active Desktop. If 
  476.   you see a "Navigation Canceled" error message instead of Web 
  477.   content, try turning off ratings. 
  478.  
  479. Some Programs Do Not Detect Browser Version Correctly
  480. -----------------------------------------------------
  481. Some third-party Internet-based programs use non-standard 
  482. methods of detecting the current browser version. If you see this 
  483. problem in a program you are running, please contact the program 
  484. vendor for an update.
  485.  
  486. Temporary Internet Files Are Replicated 
  487.   to the Home Directory of Roaming Users
  488. ----------------------------------------
  489. The Temporary Internet Files folder is replicated to the home 
  490. directory of users with roaming profiles. If you are running 
  491. Internet Explorer 4.0 on a Windows NT system, this may cause 
  492. disk-space problems on servers with numerous roaming users or 
  493. with several users who have with large caches. To set cache size, 
  494. click the View menu, click Internet Options, and then click the 
  495. Settings button.
  496.  
  497. Java Applets Will Not Print on Asian Windows 95 Computers
  498. ---------------------------------------------------------
  499. If you are running a Far East version of Windows 95, printing a page 
  500. that contains a Java applet prints only the page without the applet. 
  501. This will be fixed in a future release.
  502.  
  503. Using NetMeeting When Internet Explorer 4.0 Is in Offline Mode
  504. --------------------------------------------------------------
  505. If you start NetMeeting with Internet Explorer 4.0 in Offline 
  506. mode, NetMeeting will not start properly, although no error 
  507. message appears. To work around this problem, dial up using RAS 
  508. for Windows NT computers or Dial-Up Networking for Windows 95 
  509. computers. Or, in Internet Explorer, click the File menu, and 
  510. then click Work Offline to clear the check mark.
  511.  
  512. Access Aptiva Issues with Internet Explorer 4.0
  513. -----------------------------------------------
  514. The Access Aptiva component of the IBM Aptiva PC does not render 
  515. properly with Internet Explorer 4.0. To get an updated version of 
  516. the Access Aptiva program, you can either go to the IBM home page 
  517. at http://www.us.pc.ibm.com/aptiva, or click IBM Update Connector 
  518. from the Start menu, which automatically downloads the updated 
  519. components.

  522. APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  523. =========================
  524.  
  525. Adobe Acrobat: Using Internet Explorer 4.0 with 
  526. Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0
  527. -----------------------------------------------
  528. Using the Adobe Acrobat .pdf viewer in Internet Explorer 4.0 
  529. may not work. You can download the latest version from 
  530. http://www.adobe.com.
  531.  
  532. Also, if Content Advisor is turned on in Internet Explorer 4.0, 
  533. you cannot view .pdf files in the browser.
  534.  
  535. CleanSweep: Critical System Files Replaced
  536. ------------------------------------------
  537. If you are already running Internet Explorer 4.0, installing 
  538. CleanSweep 3.0 is not recommended. CleanSweep replaces vital 
  539. system files and will cause both Internet Explorer and the 
  540. Active Desktop not to work properly.
  541.  
  542. DEC ClientWorks: Remove Xdmisrv.exe Before Installing 
  543.   Internet Explorer 4.0
  544. -----------------------------------------------------
  545. If you are running DEC Client Works on a computer with Windows 95 
  546. and with no networking services installed, you should remove the 
  547. file Xdmisrv.exe from your startup group before installing Internet 
  548. Explorer 4.0. Otherwise, you may see the following error message when 
  549. your computer restarts after installation: "RPCSS caused an invalid
