BROKEN ALLIANCE uses the same rule book and document lookup check as:

- Tigers On the Prowl VERSION 2 -
If you do not own one of these games, you will not be able to run Broken
Alliance. If you own Tigers version 1.xx, you will need to upgrade to
version 2. Please contact HPS Simulations for more information.
VERSION INFORMATION:
Broken Alliance ver. 1.01 includes changes and additons made up through
Panthers ver. 1.20 and Tigers ver. 2.04. Rather than include the lengthy
README file again here, please reference the one included with either of
those games.
SUMMARY of 1.01 changes:
-Being shelled by indirect fire now gives a unit special move options (and the
crowd went wild.....)<G>
-Fixed intermittant Win95 incompatibility problem (could not get past password)
-Passengers no longer dismount when the carrier gets special orders.
-When giving orders to a stack, exiting a unit brings you back to the "units in
hex" box instead of back to the map (requested by users)
-LOS function now available from unit orders box (requested by users)
-Close combat fixed.
-Overruns fixed.
-Infantry now able to use "backup" orders.
-Paratroops can't pop smoke in the air, and only naval units can pop smoke in
the water.
-Only friendly units can now occupy friendly casemates/pillboxes.
-Loaded units do not get IP benefits. (the carrier still does).
-Spotter aircraft no longer sink in deep water. <G>.
-Range fixed for "spine" hexes...no longer is it 57m or so.
-DF smoke rounds only fired in DF fire phase...NOT in ambush phase even if
qualified. Units will cease fire if they run out of SMOKE now, and not switch
to AP or whatever.
-Adjusted area fire for flame weapons.
-Airstrike problem fixed. Also, crash caused by airstrikes in replay fixed.
-HE now more effective against semi-armored tgts. IE trucks.
-First time firing units now use slow ROF per rules.
-Armored targets now never receive more than 30% suppression per rules.
-Suppression no longer freezes vehicles.
-Mechanical breakdowns now adjusted to training level.

-Use of weapon #3 has been restricted for those units button-up by suppression.
-Placing detachments fixed from 1/2 of unit to 8-11 men.
-ROF now adds to firing accuracy (+20% for slow, -20% for rapid) except initial
volley.
-Lowered rate of fire for extreme long range gunnery.
-Fixed additional turn firing accuracy increases. They now increase per rules.
-AI tweaked to pick more dangerous targets.
-Fixed computer lockup when computer placing units in scenario setup.
-Numerous database changes. Notably, corrected penetration of heavy
machineguns such as the .50 caliber and the Soviet 12.7mm. Corrected
machinegun ranges to combat ranges and not the absolute maximum of the weapons.
Added separate vehicles for T-34D, E, F (these three had extremely minor armor
differences from the T-34C but....). Added TT-34 recovery vehicle. Added Pz
IIIJ (+) which had locally added 20mm spaced armor to turret and front.
Corrected penetration of Soviet 27mm gun. Corrected air drag value for 57mm
L73. Added Lysander Recon plane for Finns. Corrected RU_FORCE.DAT file error
with Cav HMG.
-Lowered probability to spot stationary personnel. Lowered spotting capability
of moving and buttoned vehicles.
-Incendiary weapon fire escape routines fixed. Lowered probability of fires
spreading. However, players should note that most commanders did not authorize
the random burning down of civilian areas in Germany. Although historically
done on occasion, players who wish to fight a little more civilized of a game
should only fire incendiaries against spotted targets, and not just burn down
entire towns hoping to catch a few enemy vehicles. However, all warcrimes
aside, the routines HAVE been fixed and vehicles will escape per the rules now.
Those players who play PBEM and want an official house rule, it would be that
firing INCEND indiscriminately should not be allowed, rather, in can be used
indirectly only against spotted targets.
-Units lost in fires now add VPs.
-VPs adjusted for trucks (they were too high) and for infantry (they used to be
dirt cheap).
-LP/OPs get special sighting bonus.
-Cross section LOS not shown for situations where spotter has lost LOS.
-Reduced damage for Molotov cocktails and other small flame weapons (error
introduced in 2.04j)
-Increased truck and other lightly armored vehicle kills/damage from MGs.
-Fixed DF routines for onboard naval units.
NOTE: Some armored vehicles have TWO main guns, e.g., the Char B and the
Grant/Lee series. Although only the first ammunition type is available to the
player for the second main gun (normally AP) the other types will be listed but
are not used. Due to program constraints only AP will be accessible. The
listing of the other ammo types is merely a cosmetic issue and has no bearing
on play.

Alliance. The file "BWEAPONS.TXT" includes more detailed descriptions of
most of the new equipment.

1. TF ABRAMS - This hypothetical mid-1945 scenario features a U.S. force
fighting a holding battle against a large Soviet tank regiment (+).
2. TF CROMBEZ - In mid February 1951, the 23rd Regimental Combat Team found
itself surrounded at Chipyong-ni. The first rescue attempt up the main
road failed, and the IX Corps commander alerted the 5th Cavalry Regiment
to punch through a narrow valley, 15 miles up a secondary road, and reopen
a path to the surrounded infantrymen at Chipyong-ni. Dissatisfied with
the slow progress, COL Crombez formed a TF based on the 23 tanks he had
available from D/6th Tank Bn (M46s) and from A/70th Tank Bn (M4A3). He
mounted 160 infantrymen from Company L, 5th Cavalry on top of the tanks to
provide support against enemy infantry, plus 4 engineers to handle any
mines. Although they were killing hundreds of Chinese as they travelled
north, COL Crombez had to force the column to keep moving despite the
small arms fire they were taking. At one point a group of infantry was
accidently left behind. At a deep road cut just south of Chipyong-ni, the
Chinese sprang a trap with a captured 3.5" bazooka, but the damaged tank
was able to pull off the road so as to not halt the column. The Chinese
hurled down satchel charges and fired rockets at the column, but intense
return fire caused the Chinese to flee. Observer planes and close air
strikes also assisted. When the column arrived at Chipyong-ni the
defenders cheered, but of the 160 Company L infantrymen who rode on the
tanks, only 23 were left, and 13 of them were wounded. COL Crombez asked
for volunteers to ride the tanks during the return trip. No one answered.
3. DEININGEN - This hypothetical 1952 scenario on the North German plain pits
the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) against a Russian bridgehead over the
Woernitz River.
4. HILL 800 - Known as "Bunker Hill," this position on the "Noname Line" was
defended by the 3rd Battalion, 38th Infantry. The U.S. X Corps had fallen
back during the "Fifth Phase Offensive" and had some time to dig in. The
3/38th used over 237,000 sandbags in the preparation of their positions
and 385 rolls of barbed wire. Despite elaborate defensive preparations,
the Chinese still managed to penetrate into the U.S. positions on the
foggy night of 17 May 1951, although they were thrown out by a U.S.
counterattack. The U.S. artillery and mortars then began to take a
terrible toll, as proximity fuzed airbursts were fired by the hundreds.
(the 38th FA battalion fired over 10,000 rounds that night, a record
amount). The Chinese were forced to break off their attacks.
5. FULDA GAP - This is a monster hypothetical scenario featuring a Soviet
tank attack through the famed "Fulda Gap." Do not play this if you are
looking for a quick or introductory scenario!
6. OPN EAGLE - This hypothetical scenario features the background story of a
U.S. drive to liberate the satellite Warsaw Pact nations. As part of an
offensive push in Bohemia, elements of the 82nd Airborne Division are
dropped deep behind Soviet lines into a "quiet" area to seize some vital
bridges. The U.S. armored forces will then link up with them.
Unfortunately, intelligence didn't account for all the Soviets in the
area....
7. HILL 283 - This is a small historical scenario based on a fight that
occured almost right on the 38th Parallel. Elements of the 1st and 3rd
Battalions, 7th Infantry, were holding defensive positions near the "Iron
Triangle" area of Korea. Unfortunately, despite their excellent
positions, a large Chinese force infiltrated from the flank and captured a
battalion observation post behind the defenders. Realizing that the Bn OP
had total observation over their own positions, 1/7 launched airstrikes
consisting of napalm and rockets to reduce the fire coming from behind
them, while at the same time holding off attacks to the front with small
arms fire and artillery support. The battalions were finally forced to
withdraw.
8. HAN RIVER CROSSING - On the 7th of March 1951, the 3/35th Infantry
Battalion was detailed to make an assault river crossing of the Han River.
Part of their support came from the 15 M4A3 tanks of A/89th Tank
Battalion. After a barrage from US and British artillery, the battalion
crossed the river on assault rafts, and the tankers decided to attempt to
cross the river at a shallow part near a small sand island. Of the 15
tanks, only one flooded out while crossing, and the other 14 provided
superb close support in knocking out numerous enemy machineguns nests.
This is a medium sized scenario, with not much hope for the Chinese
forces, and might serve well for a practice scenario.
9. OPN SNOWCAT - This hypothetical 1946 scenario is sort of a Battle of the
Bulge in reverse....the Soviets have some U.S. infantry trapped, and a
mixed German / U.S. task force has been assigned to break through. The
date is January 1946, and the U.S. 4th AD has been given OPCON over
Kampfgruppe Weiss, which has just been reequipped with the newly built
Panther II tanks.
10. TF SMITH - This disaster displayed the danger in severely downsizing the
US military in between wars....creating the 1990's motto of "No more TF
Smiths!" TF Smith was a lead element of the U.S. 24th Infantry Division,
the first unit to arrive on the ground and fight in the Korean War. The
unit consisted of two companies from 1/21 Infantry and A/52nd FA (105mm).
Arriving hurriedly from Japan, the TF had only two of four 4.2" mortars
and two of four 75mm recoilless rifles sent with it. Each man had only
120 rounds of ammunition (24 ammo units in game terms), and there were
only 6 HEAT rounds for the artillery (although HE was plentiful).
Arriving just north of Osan after some friendly airstrikes hit the South
Koreans, the TF dug in and was almost ready on the rainy morning of the
5th of July when the North Korean tanks arrived. There was not a single
AT mine available in all of Korea, and if present, they could have proved
critical in stopping the North Korean tanks. 33 T-34/85s came rumbling
down the road as expected. Harrassed by the artillery's HE rounds, they
kept coming until they came to the pass. The 75mm recoilless rifles had
no effect. 2LT Ollie Connor then fired 22 2.36" bazooka rockets at the
lead two tanks with no appreciable results. It is believed the HEAT
rounds fired from the forward artillery piece might have gotten the first
two tanks, but the rest just fired at the infantry and kept moving toward
Osan. Meanwhile, the 16th and 18th Regiments (over 1,000 infantry) of the
NK 4th Infantry Division were moving up for a ground assault. Although
the Americans stopped the frontal movements of the North Koreans, they
were getting flanked on both sides and had to withdraw. TF Smith lost
over 150 of its 500 men in this battle, and failed to stop the North
Korean advance for very long at all. Note: this scenario is historically
accurate, and should prove fairly hopeless for the U.S. player.
