Also called 'medal play,' this is the traditional game of golf where the goal is to finish a round with the fewest number of strokes. In competition, the lowest round or series of rounds wins. Handicaps are often used to equalize competition among golfers of various skills.
This type of play is scored by the number of holes won between competitors. A hole is won by the competitor who holes the ball in the fewest number of strokes. Score is kept between competitors using the terms 'holes up' or 'all square' with the number of holes left 'to play' (e.g. 'Nicklaus 3 Up Thru 9' means the Golden Bear is three holes ahead with 9 holes left to play.) A side is 'dormie' when it is as many holes up as there are holes remaining to be played.
This is a Stroke Play tournament where each competitor deducts his or her handicap from final score. The player with the lowest net score wins.
This is a Stroke Play tournament where the player with the lowest gross score is the winner. Handicaps are not used.
Skins is a popular 'side game' that is played by two or more competitors. The player with the lowest score on a hole wins a 'skin.' When holes are tied, the skin or skins are carried forward to the next hole until they are won. In the $1 Million Skins Challenge, different values are placed on each hole and each skin is worth $30,000. Scoring is as follows: 1st 6 holes - 1 skin per hole, middle 6 holes - 2 skins per hole, last 6 holes - 3 skins per hole.
This game is a sudden death playoff with a twist - someone is dropped from each hole. Two or more competitors play Stroke Play, and the player with the hightest score at the end of the first hole is dropped from the competition. If there is a tie for the highest score, then all players will be carried thru to the next hole. The last player remaining is the winner.
This game is another popular side game to Stroke Play. The goal is to accumulate as many points as possible (stakes are often assigned to each point.) Three points are possible for each hole: one for the player who reaches the green first; one for the player who is closest to the cup after all are on the green, and one for the player who is the first to hole out. In this game, nobody gives up their honors position!
