  104.        Item icon.

  106.   With Windows 95:
  107.     (i) choose Programs from the Start menu.
  108.     (ii) Select The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game item in BPMC
  109.          program group.

  111. - Skipping the Introduction.
  112.   To skip the introduction, click the mouse button
  113.   while it is playing. To view the introduction again, quit and
  114.   restart The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game from Windows.
  115.  
  116. - Quitting the game.
  117.   There are two ways to quit from The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game.
  118.   
  119.   Method One:
  120.     Hold down the ALT key and press the F4 key.
  121.  
  122.   Method Two:
  123.     Go to the Options Menu (click the Options icon) and click Quit.

  126.   You can select question categories using the 1-5 keys on your

  130. 2. Problems installing The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game:

  132. If you encounter any error during installation, please try the 
  133. following:
  134.  
  135. - Examining your hard drive.
  136.   Windows 3.x users:
  137.    i) First exit Windows.
  138.   ii) Run CHKDSK.EXE or SCANDISK.EXE in DOS to examine your hard 
  139.       drive. 
  140.  
  141.   Windows 95 users:
  142.    i) From System Tools group, Click the Scandisk icon to start.
  143.   ii) Follow instructions to examine your hard drive.
  144.  
  145. - If there is a problem in your hard drive, please consult the
  146.   DOS manual or other hard disk management manual before you 
  147.   attempt to fix the problem. You may need to backup your data 
  148.   and other system files.
  149.  
  150. - Temporarily disabling other applications.
  151.   If you have any DOS TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) 
  152.   application (e.g. virus shield) or Windows screen saver running 
  153.   in the background, please temporarily disable it. You can 
  154.   enable it again after the installation. 
  155.  
  156.   If you have other Windows applications running in the 
  157.   background, please close the ones you are not using. 
  158.  
  159. - Checking your system hardware.
  160.   Please check your system hardware and make sure your machine 
  161.   is functioning properly. Any IRQ or DMA device conflict may
  162.   create system instability, which will prevent software from
  163.   functioning normally.
  164.  
  165. ****************************************************************
  166. 3. Problems Running The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game:
  167. ****************************************************************
  168. - System freeze at the game startup screen.
  169.   If you encounter system freeze at the game startup screen, this
  170.   means there could be a corrupted component in VFW or the version
  171.   of the existing VFW is not compatible with the game. Please
  172.   read "Problems with Video for Windows" in section 6.
  173.  
  174. - General Protection Faults.
  175.   General Protection Faults may occur when there is not enough 
  176.   memory available to the application, or if the system is 
  177.   experiencing a conflict with particular software or hardware.
  178.  
  179.   A frequent cause of General Protection Faults is the use of 
  180.   outdated video drivers or audio drivers. Check to make sure 
  181.   you are using the latest video drivers and audio drivers 
  182.   available from your computer, video card or audio card 
  183.   manufacturer.
  184.  
  185.   When running the program, if a General Protection Fault occurs, 
  186.   quit and restart Windows. In many cases, the problem will not 
  187.   occur again. 
  188.  
  189. - Out-Of-Memory Errors.
  190.   If you encounter out-of-memory errors, there is probably not
  191.   enough memory available to the program. Consider doing the 
  192.   following to improve the memory usage.
  193.  
  194.   i) Close all unnecessary applications.  
  195.  
  196.   ii) If you are using Windows for Workgroups, try to run windows
  197.       without loading the network drivers by typing "win /n" at 
  198.       the DOS prompt.  
  199.  
  200.   iii) Determine how much memory your computer has available by 
  201.        typing "mem" and pressing ENTER at the DOS prompt. You 
  202.        need a minimum of 8MB of total memory to use the program.
  203.        If you do not have at least 8MB of physical memory, you 
  204.        may not be able to run the program until you add more 
  205.        physical memory.
  206.  
  207.   iv) Check the virtual memory setting. Try to use the Windows
  208.       recommended virtual memory size; it may help to solve the 
  209.       out-of-memory problem. Please consult the Windows User's
  210.       Guide for more information.
  211.  
  212.   v) If you are using Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11, 
  213.      you can try optimizing the memory usage by using Memmaker in 
  214.      DOS.
  215.  
  216. - Special software that is not supported.
  217.   The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game does not support special software
  218.   that assigns custom functions to simulate the left, right or 
  219.   center mouse button. These functions should not be used while 
  220.   running the program.
  221.  
  222. - Windows 95 taskbar overlapping the program screen.
  223.   If you find that the Windows 95 taskbar is overlapping the
  224.   program screen, you can hide the taskbar by doing the following:
  225.  
  226.     i) Click the Start button.
  227.    ii) Choose Settings.
  228.   iii) Click Taskbar icon.
  229.    iv) Check the Auto Hide box.
  230.     v) Click the OK button.
  231.  
  232.   To see the taskbar again, move the mouse cursor to the edge
  233.   of your screen where your taskbar is located.
  234.  
  235. - Conflicts with Screen Savers.
  236.   It is recommended that you temporarily disable screen savers 
  237.   of any kind while running The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game. Some
  238.   screen savers may have conflicts with the program and cause 
  239.   General Protection Faults.
  240.  
  241. - Turning off Microsoft Office Manager.
  242.   If you have Microsoft Office installed (either the standard or 
  243.   the professional version), you should disable the Microsoft 
  244.   Office Manager (MOM) toolbar while running The Sci-Fi Channel 
  245.   Trivia Game. The presence of the toolbar in The Sci-Fi Channel
  246.   Trivia Game can cuse colors to be distorted. Check your
  247.   Microsoft Office documentation for information on how to 
  248.   temporarily disable the Microsoft Office Manager toolbar.
  249.  
  250. ****************************************************************
  251. 4. Performance Issues:
  252. ****************************************************************
  253. - The program runs slowly.
  254.   If you find The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game runs slowly, your 
  255.   system may not be optimized for the best performance. Consider 
  256.   doing the following to improve the system performance.
  257.  
  258.   i) Run Windows 3.1 in Enhanced mode. To see if you are running 
  259.      Windows in Enhanced mode, from the Program Manager Help menu 
  260.      choose the About Program Manager (or from the File Manager 
  261.      Help menu choose About File Manager). In the bottom section 
  262.      of the dialog box, you should see the phrase "386 Enhanced 
  263.      Mode." If you do not see this phrase, you can force Windows 
  264.      to run in Enhanced mode by typing WIN/3 or WIN/E at the DOS 
  265.      prompt when launching Windows. 
  266.   
  267.      Windows for Workgroups always runs in Enhanced mode and no 
  268.      message is displayed in the About dialog box.  
  269.  
  270.   ii) If you are running Windows in Enhanced mode, set up a 
  271.       permanent Windows swap file for virtual memory on your hard 
  272.       disk. See your Windows User's Guide for more information.  
  273.  
  274.   iii) Defragment ("clean up") your hard disk by running a 
  275.        defragmentation program (MS-DOS 6.2 and above includes the 
  276.        program "defrag").
  277.  
  278. - Adjusting SmartDrive for better performance.
  279.   If your machine has only 8MB of RAM running Windows 3.11 or 
  280.   Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and having the 32-bit file access
  281.   mode turned on in Windows, please set the cache size for Windows
  282.   to minimum for optimial performance. For example:
  283.  
  284.         c:\windows\smartdrv.exe 2048 128
  285.  
  286.   where "128" is the only cache size Windows will use in Windows 
  287.   environment. Please read your DOS and Windows User's Guide for 
  288.   details.
  289.  
  290. - Tips for Notebook computers.
  291.   Some notebook computers may be still using a display driver, 
  292.   audio driver and CD-ROM driver that came with the system. 
  293.   Those drivers are probably the earliest releases, and may 
  294.   not be optimized for the best data transfer and hardware 
  295.   utilization. Please check with the manufacturer for up-to-date
  296.   device drivers.
  297.  
  298.   If you have Windows 95 running on your notebook computer, try
  299.   to use the native Windows 95 32-bit device drivers for your
  300.   sound card and CD-ROM drive. This may increase performance 
  301.   on your machine and make The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game run 
  302.   smoother. 
  303.  
  304. - Choppy animation frames and sound.
  305.   The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game program reads most of its 
  306.   animation and sound data from the CD-ROM. If choppy animation 
  307.   or sound still occurs after you have optimized your system, 
  308.   including updating the CD-ROM driver and sound card driver (read
  309.   the following sections for details), this is due to the nature 
  310.   of your CD-ROM hardware and CD-ROM interface card (including 
  311.   sound card that comes with a CD-ROM interface). Some earlier 
  312.   CD-ROM drives and CD-ROM interface cards may be a bottleneck 
  313.   preventing optimal data transfer, which is something not able to
  314.   be fixed by software.
  315.  
  316. ****************************************************************
  317. 5. CD-ROM Issues:
  318. ****************************************************************
  319. - Increasing the CD-ROM drive reading performance.
  320.   Set up enough buffer for MSCDEX by putting /M:25 at the end of 
  321.   MSCDEX.EXE line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  322.  
  323.   Some CD-ROM drives came with earlier releases of their DOS 
  324.   drivers.  Old drivers may not be optimized for the best data 
  325.   transfer rate between the CD-ROM drive and the CD-ROM host. 
  326.   Contact your CD-ROM manufacturer for the latest drivers.
  327.  
  328.   If you are using Windows 95, make sure the CD-ROM Optimized 
  329.   Access Pattern in File System Properties is set up properly for
  330.   the type of CD-ROM drive you have. 
  331.  
  332.   e.g. if you have a Quad-speed CD-ROM drive, you should have the 
  333.        CD-ROM Optimized Access Pattern set up for Quad-speed or 
  334.        higher.
  335.  
  336.   If you are using Windows 95, try to use the native Windows 95 
  337.   CD-ROM driver for your CD-ROM drive. Using the CD-ROM DOS driver
  338.   in Windows 95 may result in slower performance.  The CD-ROM 
  339.   DOS driver may also impede full 32-bit file system access.
  340.  
  341.   The file system performance may vary if it is not in full 32-bit
  342.   pattern.
  343.  
  344.   Make sure that your CD-ROM drive is MPC2-compatible. An MPC2-
  345.   compatible drive has an average seek time of less than one 
  346.   second and can transfer data from the compact disc at 300k per
  347.   second while using less than 40% of the CPU bandwidth. Check 
  348.   the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive to make sure
  349.   it meets these requirements. An incompatible CD-ROM drive will 
  350.   slow down the performance of the program.
  351.  
  352. - Errors reading from the CD-ROM drive.
  353.   If your system has errors reading from the CD-ROM drive, please
  354.   do the following checks:
  355.  
  356.     i) make sure the disc surface is clean.
  357.    ii) Look to find out if there are any visible scratches on the 
  358.        surface of the disc.
  359.   iii) check the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive 
  360.        or contact the company that supplied the drive in order
  361.        to find out if your CD-ROM drive is functioning properly.
  362.  
  363.   Do not remove the CD-ROM while the program is running.
  364.   If the program cannot find the data files that it needs from 
  365.   the CD disc, you will see a message that tells you that your 
  366.   computer cannot read from the drive letter of your CD-ROM.
  367.  
  368.   If you have an external CD-ROM drive, make sure the drive is 
  369.   connected to your computer, plugged in, and turned on. If you 
  370.   still see the error message after checking the points above, 
  371.   check the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive or 
  372.   contact the company that supplied the drive.
  373.  
  374. ****************************************************************
  375. 6. Video Display Issues:
  376. ****************************************************************
  377. - Basic display requirement.
  378.   The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game requires a video card that 
  379.   supports at least 640 x 480 resolution with 256 colors
  380.  
  381. - Problems when running in 8 bit, 16 bit, 24 bit or 32 bit color
  382.   mode.
  383.   If there is a problem with animation playback and graphics--such
  384.   as skipping frames and palette flashes, consider the following 
  385.   solutions:
  386.  
  387.   i) Set the screen resolution back to 640 x 480 with 8 bit color
  388.      mode (256 colors), if the display is already running in 8 bit
  389.      color mode, try setting it to 16 bit or other higher color
  390.      mode. Please consult your video card user's manual on how to
  391.      change your display resolutions.
  392.  
  393.   ii) Update the video card drivers. Make sure you are using the 
  394.       most recent video drivers available for Windows from your 
  395.       video card manufacturer; earlier releases of video drivers
  396.       may not be optimized for best display performance. Please
  397.       consult your video card user's manual on how to obtain the
  398.       latest driver. Most of the video card manufacturers provide
  399.       BBS, WWW and FTP sites for downloading updated drivers. 
  400.     
  401. - The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game looks best in 640x480 resolution.
  402.   If The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game is too small on your screen,
  403.   you are probably running in a resolution higher than 640x480.
  404.   To make The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game as large as possible on
  405.   your screen, change the screen resolution to 640 x 480.
  406.  
  407. - Problems with Video for Windows (VFW).
  408.   During the installation, the installer will check your system
  409.   for required drivers. The installer will not launch VFW setup
  410.   if there is already a version of VFW existing in Windows. 
  411.   If you encounter system freeze at the game startup screen, this
  412.   means there could be a corrupted component in VFW or the version
  413.   of the existing VFW is not compatible with the game. In such
  414.   case, please try the following:
  415.  
  416.   Windows 3.1/Windows for Workgroups 3.11:
  417.     The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game requires a complete version of 
  418.     Video for Windows v1.1e to be installed before starting the 
  419.     game, please reinstall VFW v1.1e from the CD as following:
  420.  
  421.     (i) Choose the Run command from the File menu. 
  422.     (ii) Type the following in the Run dialog box: 
  423.  
  424.             D:\vfw11e\setup.exe
  425.  
  426.          (Where 'D' is your CD-ROM drive letter. If your CD-ROM 
  427.          drive letter is not 'D' then replace 'D' with the 
  428.          correct letter.)
  429.     (iii) Follow instructions on the screen and finish the 
  430.           installation.
  431.  
  432.   Windows 95:
  433.     During the installation, if the installer reports:
  434.  
  435.          "Missing The Intel Indeo Video Format"
  436.  
  437.     please reinstall video and audio compression drivers from 
  438.     Windows 95 CD before playing the game.
  439.  
  440. ****************************************************************
  441. 7. Audio Issues:
  442. ****************************************************************
  443. - Conflicts with other applications.
  444.   Audio problems can have many causes. Other applications that 
  445.   play sounds may interrupt sounds in The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia 
  446.   Game.
  447.  
  448.   Most sound cards cannot play two sounds simultaneously. In some
  449.   cases, playing two sounds simultaneously can result in a system
  450.   crash or freeze; in such cases, what you need to do is to 
  451.   restart your system. However, a few applications that play 
  452.   sounds, such as some screen savers, may remove audio capability
  453.   from all other Windows applications; if this is the case, you 
  454.   may see The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game start up without any 
  455.   sound. If you suspect you have such situation, quit the game and
  456.   turn off these applications before launching The Sci-Fi Channel 
  457.   Trivia Game.
  458.  
  459. - Audio driver problems.
  460.   If you experience problems with audio, you may need to update
  461.   your sound card driver. It is always a good idea to use the 
  462.   most recent driver. Contact the manufacturer of your sound 
  463.   card to find out how to obtain a new driver.
  464.  
  465. - IBM Aptiva Mwave sound card.
  466.   If you own an IBM Aptiva Mwave sound card and are experiencing
  467.   'looping' or 'repeating' audio playback, please contact IBM to
  468.   update the sound card driver.
  469.  
  470. - Sound Blaster 16 sound card.
  471.   If you own a Sound Blaster 16 sound card and experiencing 
  472.   distorted audio in Windows 3.1/Windows for Workgroups 3.11,
  473.   please contact Creative Lab to update the sound card driver.
  474.  
  475. - Sounds play, but not very well.
  476.   Sounds that are distorted or "fuzzy" have several possible 
  477.   causes. The most likely one is simply that your speakers are 
  478.   not of high quality.
  479.  
  480.   It is also possible that the software settings on your sound 
  481.   card are causing distortion. For example, if the sound card 
  482.   volume or "WAVE file output" is set to near its maximum, it will
  483.   produce amplification distortion, just as it would on a stereo 
  484.   system. To find out how to change your sound card settings, 
  485.   check the documentation that came with your sound card.
  486.  
  487. - Sound does not play at all.
  488.   If you do not hear any sounds, make sure that the volume for 
  489.   your speakers is set to an audible level. 
  490.  
  491.   If the volume is set to an audible level, you can perform a 
  492.   simple test by using the Windows Media Player to play a .WAV 
  493.   file. If you still hear no sounds at all, something may be wrong
  494.   with your sound card setup. Check your sound card IRQ and DMA 
  495.   settings, make sure those settings are not in conflict with 
  496.   other hardware devices. Also, check to see that the driver is 
  497.   installed correctly and, if necessary, reinstall it. Refer to 
  498.   the documentation that came with your sound card for more 
  499.   information on installing audio drivers.
  500.  
  501.   Please note that The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Game requires an 
  502.   MPC2-compatible sound card to be installed and is not intended 
  503.   to run with drivers which use the PC internal speaker, such as 
  504.   the unsupported "PC Speaker" driver. Such a drivers will in most
  505.   cases not play any sounds. If you have both a sound card and the
  506.   PC Speaker driver installed, it is preferable to un-install the 
  507.   PC Speaker driver.
