  32. 1.  INSTALLATION:
  33.  
  34.     We have made every effort to insure a painless installation.  If 
  35. you do encounter a problem, please go to section 1C for information
  36. on our Alternate Installation.
  37.  
  38.      1A.  WINDOWS 95:
  39.             Insert the CD into the CD ROM drive, if your computer has
  40.             the autorun feature the installation program will come up
  41.             automatically.  If not, simply click on the start button 
  42.             on your task bar, select run, and type:  D:\SETUP (where
  43.             D is the drive letter of your CD ROM).
  44.           
  45.           Follow the instructions on the screen.

  47.      1B.  DOS:
  48.             Insert the CD into the CD ROM drive, and type:  D:\INSTALL
  49.             (where D is the drive letter of your CD ROM).
  50.     
  51.           Follow the instructions on the screen.
  52.  
  53.      1C.  ALTERNATE INSTALLATION:
  54.             If the previous Installation instructions do not work, or 
  55.             you receive an error during installation, try running
  56.             the Alternat Installation program.
  57.  
  58.           Windows 95:  Select SHUT DOWN from the task bar in Windows
  59.             95, and choose RESTART THE COMPUTER IN MS DOS MODE.  Once
  60.             you have reached the DOS Prompt, follow the instructions 
  61.             below for DOS.

  63.           DOS:  From the DOS Prompt type:  D:\INSTALL2 (where D is
  64.             the drive letter of your CD ROM).  Follow the instructions
  65.             given.

  67.  
  68. 2)  Installing And Testing Your VESA Video Driver
  69.  
  70.     A VESA Video driver that supports a 640x480 resolutions is 
  71. required for LINKS 386 CD.  For most new systems, the driver is built 
  72. on the card and the game will "just work".  
  73.     If you do require a driver to operate, one is usually included 
  74. with your video card.  Whenever possible we would encourage you 
  75. to use this driver.
  76.  
  77.     Should you require a driver, and one is not supplied by your video
  78. card manufacture, please follow the following instructions.
  79.  
  80.     2A)  UNIVBE51a VIDEO DRIVER
  81.            The UNIVBE51a VIDEO DRIVER is a Shareware driver that works
  82.            with a wide variety of video cards and requires little user
  83.            intervention for installation.  Because this is a share-
  84.            ware product, it will expire after 21 days.
  85.    
  86.          Installation:
  87.          Windows 95:  Select RUN from the Start Menu and type:
  88.            D:\UNIVBE51\INSTALL (where D is the drive letter of the CD
  89.            ROM).  Follow the instructions given.
  90.          
  91.          DOS:  From the DOS Prompt type: D:\UNIVBE51\INSTALL (where
  92.            D is the drive letter of the CD ROM).  Follow the 
  93.            instructions given on the screen.
  94.  
  95.     2B)  Another option we have included is SETVESA.  This program 
  96.            will attempt to determine your video card, then install a
  97.            driver for it.  This program requires more user intervention
  98.            but will assure the correct driver for the video card.
  99.  
  100.          This program should not be run from Windows 95.  To run
  101.            SETVESA, shutdown Windows 95 by selecting SHUTDOWN from the
  102.            Start Menu and select RESTART THE COMPUTER IN MS-DOS MODE.
  103.  
  104.          DOS:  At the DOS prompt type:  D:\SETVESA (where D is the drive 
  105.            letter of your CD ROM).  Once the program begins, you will see 
  106.            several options, choose AUTOMATIC METHOD if you are a novice
  107.            user, or select MANUAL METHOD if you understand how to 
  108.            edit files and load drivers.

  111. 3.  RUNNING LINKS 386 CD:
  112.  
  113.      Windows 95:  Once the program has been installed, you will be able 
  114.        to run it by selecting LINKS 386 CD from the Start Menu under
  115.        PROGRAMS and LINKS 386 CD.  We have included a program called 
  116.        SENTRY which may come up if you have other programs running.  
  117.        We recommend closing all other programs before running 
  118.        LINKS 386 CD to insure all your resorces will be available
  119.        for the game.

  121.      DOS:  In DOS, change to the Installed directory;
  122.        Example:  CD\LINKS386 <enter>
  123.        Once in the correct directory type:  GOLFCD to launch the 
  124.        program.
  125.

  127. 4.  ADVANCED ISSUES:
  128.  
  129.     WINDOWS 95:  There are two issues that may concern Windows 95 
  130.       users.  You may notice the game pausing from time to time 
  131.       during game play or video sequences.  What is happening, 
  132.       depending on the system configuration, is Windows 95 will 
  133.       occasionally swap memory to the hard drive while you are 
  134.       playing.  We have no control over this, and recommend you run 
  135.       the program from DOS.
  136.  
  137.       You may run into problems with sound if your computer has not been 
  138.       setup correctly for DOS programs.  Most Sound Cards require 
  139.       drivers to support sound in DOS applications.  These drivers were 
  140.       probably included with your Sound Card, please check the documen-
  141.       tation that came with your computer.
  142.  
  143.    
  144.     MEMORY MANAGEMENT:  LINKS 386 CD comes with a memory manager built 
  145.       in, and doesn't require any external driver to boost performance.
  146.       If you are having trouble running the program, and receive memory 
  147.       errors or get an "Abnormal Program Termination", try removing 
  148.       these external memory managers or creating a boot disk (see the 
  149.       section titled "Boot Disk")  Look for:  QEMM, EMM386, 386MAX, or 
  150.       NETROOM in the CONFIG.SYS file.
  151.  
  152.     
  153.     Drive Compression:  In most instances the program is going to run 
  154.       fine under the newest compression programs, especially those that
  155.       have come out since the release of Windows 95.  However, as with 
  156.       all compression programs, you will want to make sure you have 
  157.       enough FREE hard drive space before running any program (LINKS 
  158.       386 CD) that creates a swap file on the hard drive.  If you have
  159.       less than 8 Megs of RAM, try to have a minimum of 16 Megs of FREE
  160.       hard drive space.

  164. 5.  TROUBLE SHOOTING:
  165.  
  166.      Problem:  Screen breaks up with images drawing "all over the 
  167.        screen in random blocks" (small squares appear over game areas)
  168.           Solution 1:  Install the Univbe51 Video Driver (section 2A)
  169.           Solution 2:  From DOS, start the game by typing:  GOLFCD /J
  170.  
  171.      Problem:  Sound stops or the program locks.
  172.           Solution 1:  First, try setting your sound to NO DIGITAL
  173.             DEVICE and run the program.  If it works you may have
  174.             a conflict with your sound card settings.
  175.           Solution 2:  If you are using a Sound Blaster 1.0, Sound
  176.             Blaster Pro, or Microsoft Sound System, try selecting
  177.             the same card and settings but with the "No Verify" 
  178.             option.  These are listed at the bottom of the Digital
  179.             Sound Device List.
  180.  
  181.      Problem:  Game starts, but all you get is a mini hard drive cursor
  182.           Solution:  From DOS, start the game by typing: GOLFCD /F 
  183.  
  184.      Problem:  Program had been working, but now Locks with Abnormal 
  185.        Program Termination after selecting OK from the Select Players 
  186.        Screen.
  187.           Solution:  This may be a problem with a corrupted course file
  188.             Try coping all the courses but Harbour Town or Banff 
  189.             Springs to another directory then run the program.  If it 
  190.             works, copy one course back at a time until you find the 
  191.             corrupted course and reinstall.
  192.  
  193.      Problem:  Program doesn't work under Windows 95
  194.           Solution:  Follow the instructions for installing too, and 
  195.             running from DOS.  This is especially true for computers
  196.             with 8 Meg of RAM or less.
  197.  
  198. **NOTE:  If you are having trouble with your Sound or Video Card, you
  199.          should check the file PROBLEMS.TXT located in the root 
  200.          directory of this CD ROM.  It contains current information
  201.          on a variety of hardware related issues.
  202.  
  203. If the program still won't run, please follow the instructions below
  204. for Creating a Boot Disk.

  207. 6.  BOOT DISK:
  208.  
  209.      We have created a program that will create a boot disk for you 
  210. automatically.  Simply get a blank disk for your "A" drive, and follow
  211. the instructions given on the screen by the following program.  
  212.       To run the program, go to the DOS prompt, change to the 
  213. LINKS 386 CD directory and type:  AUTOBOOT <enter>.
  214.

  218.       If you run into problems that you cannot resolve through the
  219. information given above, you still have several options for help.
