  7. Battle of Talana Hill

  13.     The intial move of the Boer Army was designed to 
  14. trap the isolated garrisons in the north of Natal before 
  15. reinforcements could come up from Durban.  Even though
  16. General White, british general in command of Natal, knew 
  17. leaving his forces seperated could lead to disaster he
  18. thought the political situation warrented it, possible
  19. Zulu invasion.  So, a force of roughly 4000 men were 
  20. garrisoned at Dundee, Natal under General Symons.  It 
  21. was this force that General Meyer of the Boer Army 
  22. encountered, leading to the first battle of the war.  
  23.     Meyer began his attack at 5:40am as the British troops
  24. fell out from the morning parade and drill.  He expected
  25. to hold this hill while waiting for reinforcements from
  26. the main Boer Army northwest of Dundee.  The first few 
  27. hours were an artillery duel.  At 7:30 after the duel
  28. ended in England's favor the infantry assault was launched
  29. from the river bed east of Dundee.  Symons ordered his
  30. cavalry to circle around Mt. Impati to the north and cut
  31. off the Talana Hill defenders.  This forced was surprised
  32. at Mt. Impati by superior forces and half the men 
  33. surrendered(for game purposes they left on the map for
  34. alternate tactics).
  35.    The infantry assault was concentrated at the farm
  36. below Talana Hill because it provided the most cover.
  37. Progress was slow due the troops being pinned down 
  38. by the massive volume of rifle fire.  It was the first
  39. time any european army faced such concentrated fire.
  40. General Symons rallied the troops by riding into the
  41. intense fire. Needless to say he was cut down, but it
  42. did the trick and the British carried the day.  Of note
  43. once the British did reach the crest the were subjected
  44. to fire from their own artillery killing many men and
  45. officers.
