Battle of Elandslaagte
Elandslaagte, Natal N.E. of Ladysmith
October 21st, 1899
2nd Boer War
2nd Battle
In a drive to cut off the garrison at Ladysmith
a Boer advanced column makes camp(laager) at
Elandslaagte, Natal. Discovering a communications
loss via the railroad and telegraph through
Elandslaagte, British Cavlary discover the small
Boer Force.
Acting on the chance to wipe out this small
force General White, commander of the garrison
at Ladysmith, orders an assualt. The Devonshire
Battalion made a frontal assualt on the Boer posistion
while the Manchester, Gordon Highlaner, and Imperial
Light Horse Battlions(Squadrons for ILH) wheeled around
the left flank of the Boer Posistions.
Fighting was heavy around the main Boer posistion
bogging down British troops until General White
rallied them. They then stormed the posistions forcing
the Boers to retreat. The 5th Dragoons and 5th Lancers
then charged the fleeing Boers killing many.
