  33. - 1.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  34. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  35. Warcraft has a minimum requirement of DOS 5.0 or higher.  It requires
  36. a 100% IBM PC compatible with a 386 microprocessor or better and a
  37. VGA monitor.  Your system should have at least four megabytes of
  38. total memory.  Warcraft will use either EMS or XMS memory and does
  39. not require any special memory drivers other than HIMEM.SYS.

  42. IMPORTANT NOTE:  If you receive a message of the form:

  50. - 2.  SETUP AND LOADING
  51. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  52. To install Warcraft, type "INSTALL [Enter]" at the DOS prompt 
  53. and follow the onscreen instructions.  To configure Warcraft for your 
  54. computer, go to the WARCRAFT directory and type "SETUP [Enter]" at the 
  55. DOS prompt.  To run the game, type "WAR [Enter]" at the DOS prompt.

  61. There are also additional functions available during game play.

  88. - 4.  UNIT MODIFICATIONS
  89. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  90. Both Catapults and Summoned Creatures operate in manners dissimilar
  91. from other units in the game:
  92.  
  93. The catapult will attack enemy units automatically ONLY if there 
  94. are no friendly units that will be effected by splash damage from the 
  95. missile.  If you select the Attack command and specify a target, the 
  96. catapult will fire at the selected target regardless of friendly unit 
  97. proximity.
  98.  
  99. Summoned Creatures have a Magic Point (MP) bar as well as a
  100. Hit Point (HP) bar. The MP bar will degrade over time, and when it is 
  101. drained, the summoned creature will begin taking damage, as the powers 
  102. that hold it here are no longer in force.

  106. - 5.  MOVEMENT
  107. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  108. ATTACK VS. MOVE
  109. When a Unit is instructed to Move, it will head to the selected location and 
  110. ignore anything that crosses it path, including units that attack it. This 
  111. allows for uninterrupted movement, as well as enforced retreats.
  112.  
  113. When a Unit is instructed to Attack, you may choose either an area to attack, 
  114. or a specific target.
  115.  
  116. When you choose an area to Attack, the unit will move there, but if he is 
  117. attacked in transit, the unit will stop and respond to the attack.  When the 
  118. unit arrives at the selected location, it will look for immediate targets 
  119. within its range to attack.
  120.  
  121. When you choose a specific target to Attack, your unit will move to engage 
  122. the selected target, ignoring all other enemies or threats.
  123.

  126. - 6.  NETWORK PLAY
  127. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  128. IMPORTANT NOTE:  Warcraft requires the IPX network protocol.

  131. NODE NUMBERS
  132. The node number option in network play allows two players to find each other
  133. when more than one game of Warcraft is starting on the network.  Choose the
  134. same node number for both players.
  135.

  137. MESSAGES ON THE NETWORK
  138. Messages can be sent to an opposing player in a Two-Player game by simply 
  139. pressing the Enter key. A MSG: prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen.  
  140. Type in your message, and then press Enter to send it.
  141.  
  142. SELECTING UNITS IN TWO-PLAYER CUSTOM MODE
  143. In a Two-Player Custom game, players can either have the default setting
  144. of two Peons/Peasants or they can elect to create custom armies through 
  145. the Select Armies dialog.  Not only can you affect what units you are 
  146. choosing for your side, but you may select or deselect units for the 
  147. enemy side by using the mouse to click the arrow keys in the Unit Selection 
  148. area.  If you wish to negate the ability to create specific units, they 
  149. may be turned OFF in the same manner, making them unavailable for play.
  150.  
  151. SELECTING UNITS IN ONE-PLAYER CUSTOM MODE
  152. In one player custom mode, you may choose to change the number of
  153. units you start with in your fight against the computer player.  The
  154. computer player's units are fixed and cannot be altered.

  158. - 7.  MODEM PLAY
  159. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  160. For best performance you will want to disable compression and error control 
  161. on your modem.  Here are some init strings for popular modems that we have 
  162. found to work well.
  163.  
  164. HAYES ACCURA 144B, ZOOM 14400, PRACTICAL PERIPHERALS, MOST HAYES COMPATIBLES:

  174. 2400 BAUD MODEMS:
  175.     CLEAR and INIT strings set to ATZ

  177. If your system does not run smoothly during MODEM or DIRECT LINK
  178. play, these are some suggestions which may help:
  179.  
  180.     * You can turn music OFF to increase game speed
  181.  
  182.     * Decreasing the BAUD rate may increase game speed
  183.  
  184.  
  185. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  186. - 8.  TROUBLESHOOTING
  187. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  188. Most systems should experience no difficulties running Warcraft.  
  189. However, a small percentage of systems may experience occasional
  190. system conflicts.  Many of these problems are quite easy to fix
  191. using the information provided below.  Before attempting to
  192. remedy any problem, we urge you to save your important system 
  193. files (AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS in particular) before making
  194. any modifications.  Please refer to your system's documentation
  195. before making any changes.
  196.

  198. Problem #1:
  199.     I don't have enough free memory to play Warcraft
  200. --------------
  201. Here are several solutions to increase your free memory:
  202.  
  203.    * Remove unneeded TSR programs from memory
  204.  
  205.    * Remove SMARTDRIVE, or reduce the size of its disk cache
  206.     to do this, edit the smartdrive line in your autoexec.bat file
  207.     to a lower number, i.e., change C:\dos\smartdrv.exe 1024 256 /x
  208.     to C:\dos\smartdrv 256 /x.  The first number is the cache size.
  209.  
  210.    * Run the memory optimizer that comes with your memory manager
  211.      (MemMaker for EMM386, Maximize for 386MAX, Optimize with QEMM, etc)
  212.  
  213. --------------
  214. Problem #2:
  215.     The install program cannot install the program
  216.     to my hard disk due to an error condition.
  217. --------------
  218. A SMARTDRIVE conflict is the most likely cause of this problem.  
  219. see the solution to Problem #1 above.
  220.  
  221. If you are using NDOS from SYMANTEC/Norton Utilites, the installer
  222. may be unable to copy Warcraft onto your hard disk.  Remove NDOS
  223. and try to install again.
  224.  
  225.  
  226. --------------
  227. Problem #3:
  228.     Warcraft occasionally "freezes" or displays irregular behavior.
  229. --------------
  230. EMM386.EXE is the most likely cause of irregular behavior.  There are
  231. several known problems with EMM386.EXE which prevent proper program
  232. operation.  We recommend trying the following alternatives:
  233. (this list courtesy of Rational Systems Extenders)
  234.  
  235.     * Run with HIMEM.SYS only (This will also speed 
  236.       your system performance).
  237.  
  238.     * Replace EMM386 with another memory manager, such 
  239.       as QEMM-386 or 386Max.
  240.  
  241.     * Run in a Windows DOS box.
  242.  
  243.     * Configure EMM386 with both the NOEMS and NOVCPI options.
  244.  
  245.     * Convert the DEVICEHIGH statements in your CONFIG.SYS to 
  246.       DEVICE statements, and remove the LH (Load High) commands
  247.       from your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  248.  
  249. Also, if you have an older version mouse driver, try updating to
  250. a more recent version.
  251.  
  252. --------------
  253. Problem #4:
  254.     Warcraft does not work properly when I run it from a network drive.
  255. --------------
  256. Warcraft should run properly using most network cards.  A few network
  257. cards may cause sporadic crashes while running Warcraft.  Try
  258. playing Warcraft from the CD (MINIMAL install), or perform a PARTIAL
  259. or FULL install to your local hard disk.
  260.  
  261.  
  262. --------------
  263. Problem #5:
  264.     I have two monitors, and Warcraft runs very slowly on my system.
  265. --------------
  266. If you are using a monochrome monitor in addition to your VGA color monitor,
  267. the Diamond Stealth video card will cause the game to run very slowly.
  268. Other video cards may also display similar problems.  Removing the 
  269. monochrome card is highly recommended.

  271.  
  272. --------------
  273. Problem #6:
  274.     The SAVE/LOAD game feature doesn't work properly,
  275.     or causes my system to "freeze" occasionally.
  276. --------------
  277.  
  278. If you have SMARTDRIVE installed with WRITE-CACHING, the SAVE/LOAD 
  279. feature may not work properly.  This is due to problems with
  280. SMARTDRIVE and DOS. Every version of SMARTDRIVE we have tested
  281. from v4.0 through v5.01 has write-caching conflicts.  Either disable 
  282. write-caching on the hard disk containing WAR.EXE or remove SMARTDRIVE
  283. altogether.
  284.  
  285. Example:  if WAR.EXE is installed on the C: drive, try using the
  286. following command to remove write-caching:
  287.  
  288.     SMARTDRV C
  289.  
  290.  
  291. --------------
  292. Problem #7:
  293.     I upgraded to a new version of Warcraft,
  294.     and now I'm getting out of memory errors.
  295. --------------
  296.     The new version of Warcraft takes about another 20k memory to
  297.     run....see the solution to problem #1 above.
  298.

  300. --------------
  301. Problem #8:
  302.     I can't get my modem/direct link game to work correctly
  303. --------------
  304.     run Warcraft with the dlink option enabled, for example,
  305.  
  306.     WAR DLINK
  307.  
  308.     Also, if you have a modem on com 4, and are attempting a 
  309.     direct link game on com 2, or vice versa, the modem may
  310.     interfere with the direct link.  Try setting the modem to 
  311.     a different com port, or connecting on a different one.
  312.     The same is true for the pair of com 1 and com 3.
  313.  
  314. --------------
  315. Problem #9:
  316.     I have a Wave Jammer sound card, but the setup program 
  317.     doesn't find it.
  318. --------------
  319.     The Wave Jammer driver requires that you have defined
  320.     a BLASTER environment variable.  To do this, add the 
  321.     following line to your autoexec.bat file:
  322.  
  323.         set BLASTER=a220 i5 d1 t4
  324.  
  325.

  327. - 9.  MAKING YOUR SYSTEM RUN FASTER
  328. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  329. Adjust the speed using the Options Dialog or the + or - keys.
  330.  
  331. The EMM 386 memory manager (EMM386.EXE) slows the game speed of Warcraft
  332. considerably.  Use HIMEM.SYS only (without EMM386), or another memory 
  333. manager like QEMM or 386MAX to increase game speed.  Refer to your 
  334. DOS manual to change your memory configuration.  Also, please refer to 
  335. the notes regarding EMM386.EXE in the TROUBLESHOOTING section.

  339. - 10.  COMMAND LINE OPTIONS

  341. Warcraft has two command line options:
  342.  
  343. war file=<filename> where <filename> equals an alternate config. file  
  344.             The default is config.war
  345.  
  346. war dlink enables the enhanced communication routines
  347.  
  348. war ? lists these options
  349.

  384. - 12.  CHEAT CODES!!!
  385. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  386. To enable a cheat, first start a game by choosing either "New Game"
  387. or "Load Game".  Once the game has started, press the return key.
  388. Near the botton of the screen, you will see the string "MSG: ".
  389. Type any of the codes below and press return.  If the cheat was typed
  390. correctly, you will see the message:
  391.     "CHEAT ENABLED YOU WASCALLY WABBIT!"
  392.  
  393. If you type the same cheat code again, the cheat will be disabled
  394. (where appropriate).  Please note that in a Two-Player game, these 
  395. codes will affect both sides.
  396.  
  397. Warcraft has a Master Code that is required to enable the cheat codes 
  398. listed below, and it must be entered before any of the codes will work.
  399.
