  37. Installation Files and Disk Sets

  40.  The Intelligent Updater installation disks or CD contains several  
  41.  executable files. The filenames change from week to week. They show 
  42.  the month (mm) and day (dd) that the definitions were released.
  43.

  95.                   for Norton AntiVirus for NT Server, DEC Alpha 
  96.                   version.

  100. I. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows 95
  101. =====================================================================
  102.  
  103.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  104.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  105.  These new virus definitions are not compatible with older versions 
  106.  of Norton AntiVirus, and may cause it to report false virus 
  107.  detections. To see which version you are using, click Help on the 
  108.  Norton AntiVirus menu bar. Then select About Norton AntiVirus. 
  109.  
  110.  Norton AntiVirus 2.0 users should be using version 2.01. If you need 
  111.  to update Norton AntiVirus, the patch filename is NAV95201.EXE.
  112.  
  113.  This patch is available on the Symantec BBS (541-484-6669), the 
  114.  Symantec FTP site (ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/...), the Symantec 
  115.  Web site (http://www.symantec.com/nav/index_updates.html), 
  116.  CompuServe, or America Online. You can also call Customer Service 
  117.  at one of the numbers noted at the end of this document to order a
  118.  disk set.

  120.  Download or copy the patch file to a temporary directory and run it 
  121.  to extract the necessary files. Then click Setup to begin the 
  122.  installation process. After applying this patch, you must update the 
  123.  virus definition set.

  125.  Updating Norton AntiVirus 2.0 virus definition files

  127.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  128.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition
  129.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  130.     December 31 definition set. 
  131.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  132.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  133.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  134.     critical files.
  135.  4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  136.     definitions.

  140. II. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows 95

  151. III. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and 4.0 for DOS / Windows 3.x

  154.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first

  156.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus executable files (NAV.EXE, 
  157.  NAVW.EXE) to see if they are earlier than June 1, 1996. If they are, 
  158.  update them with the UPDATEME.EXE patch. 
  159.  
  160.  This patch is available on the Symantec BBS (541-484-6669), the 
  161.  Symantec FTP site (ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/...), the Symantec

  180.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  181.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  182.     December 31 definition set. 
  183.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  184.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  185.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  186.     critical files.
  187.  4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  188.     definitions.
  189.  
  190.  Updating NAV 3.0/4.0 virus definition files using DOS
  191.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  192.  1. If you are running Windows, exit to DOS. To do this, select Exit 
  193.     from the File menu.
  194.  2. Make sure you have a temporary directory on your system that you 
  195.     can use to unload the virus definitions. Set this directory in 
  196.     DOS using the SET command. For example, type SET TEMP=C:\TEMP if 
  197.     the temporary directory is C:\TEMP. 
  198.  3. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  199.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  200.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  201.     December 31 definition set. 
  202.  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  203.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  204.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  205.     critical files.
  206.  6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  207.     definitions.

  209.  Troubleshooting
  210.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  211.  If the VIRSCAN.ZIP files are not deleted after a failed or 
  212.  cancelled attempt at updating the virus definitions, they can cause 
  213.  errors when running the Intelligent Updater program. To prevent 
  214.  these types of errors, make sure that the temporary directory is 
  215.  empty before starting the update.
  216.

  219. IV. NT Tools, NT Scanner and Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT
  220. =====================================================================
  221.  
  222.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  223.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  224.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  225.     December 31 definition set. 
  226.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  227.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot

  235. V. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows NT

  240.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the 
  241.     December 31 definition set.

  246. VI. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for NetWare
  247. =====================================================================
  248.  
  249.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  250.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  251.  If your version of NAV 2.0 for NetWare is dated earlier than 
  252.  December 13, 1995, you must upgrade your software before updating 
  253.  the virus definition files. The newer releases of Norton AntiVirus 
  254.  for NetWare v2 detect and remove Microsoft Word and Excel macro 
  255.  viruses. For information on how to receive the update, call Customer 
  256.  Service at one of the numbers noted at the end of this document.
  257.  
  258.  To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definition files: 
  259.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  260.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  261.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus for Netware is 
  262.     installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  263.     drive.
  264.  2. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. To do this, select
  265.     DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for 
  266.     NetWare Windows configuration window. Or, you can press F3 at the 
  267.     NAVNLM server console screen.
  268.  2. At a DOS prompt, change to the directory that contains the 
  269.     Intelligent Updater file. 
  270.  3. From a DOS prompt, type mmddN16.EXE [path] (or mmddN161.EXE 
  271.     [path] if using the multi-file floppy disk set) where the [path]
  272.     is the location you mapped in step 1. The mmdd represents the
  273.     date of the definition set. For example, the filename would be
  274.     1231N16.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  275.  6. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  276.  7. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. Choose ENABLE NLM 
  277.     from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare Windows 
  278.     configuration window. Or, you can press F2 at the NAVNLM server 
  279.     console screen.
  280.  8. If you created a temporary drive mapping, delete it.
  281.

  284. VII. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for NetWare
  285. =====================================================================
  286.  
  287.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to

  310. VIII. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  311. =====================================================================

  315.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager executable 
  316.  file (NAVNET.EXE) to see if it is earlier than June 1, 1996. If it

  329.  directory. The network files must exist in your local directory or 
  330.  the UPDATEME.EXE patch will not extract the network files. Copy 
  331.  NAVNET.EXE and NAVNETW.EXE to your local NAV directory. Then run 
  332.  UPDATEME.EXE to extract the files. The complete directions are 
  333.  explained in the READ.ME file. 
  334.  
  335.  After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, recreate your .NNS 
  336.  files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template. For more information 
  337.  on recreating .NNS files, order FaxBack #913024 from our free 
  338.  FaxBack service at one of the numbers noted at the end of this document.
  339.  
  340.  The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set. You
  341.  must apply the latest virus definition set update after completing
  342.  the program update.
  343.  
  344.  Updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions
  345.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  346.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  347.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  348.     is installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  349.     drive.
  350.  2. At a DOS prompt, change to the directory that contains the 
  351.     Intelligent Updater file. 
  352.  3. Type mmddI16.EXE [path] (or mmddI161.EXE [path] if using the
  353.     multi-disk floppy disk set) where the [path] is the location of
  354.     the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager that you just mapped. The
  355.     mmdd represents the date of the definition set. For example, the
  356.     filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  357.  4. Follow the instructions on screen.
  358.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  359.     directory and scan the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager directory 
  360.     to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild critical files. 
  361.     To do this, type NAV from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager 
  362.     directory.
  363.  
  364.  
  365. =====================================================================
  366. IX. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager for Win95 and WinNT
  367. =====================================================================
  368.  
  369.  Installing the definitions for Network Manager involves three steps.
  370.    1. Find the directory where virus definitions are stored.
  371.    2. Copy the appropriate Intelligent Updater program to that 
  372.       directory.
  373.    3. Run the Intelligent Updater program using the /dump command to 
  374.       extract the appropriate files.
  375.  
  376.  Locating the Definitions Directory
  377.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  378.  1. Find the .NNS file that Norton AntiVirus uses to distribute 
  379.     files. To find out which .NNS file the network uses, check the 
  380.     network login script. If it uses a customized .NNS file, the 
  381.     login script will specify the location of that file. If not, 
  382.     search the login script for the location of the NAVCHECK.EXE and 
  383.     NAV32UP.EXE distribution files. The default .NNS file 
  384.     (_DEFLT32.NNS) will be in the directory containing NAVCHECK.EXE 
  385.     and NAV32UP.EXE.
  386.  2. Look in the .NNS file for the parameter that points to the virus 
  387.     definitions directory. 
  388.       * In NavNet32 v2.0, the parameter "NAVDefDir" points to 
  389.         the definitions. 
  390.       * In NavNet32 v4.x, the parameter "NAVDefDir95" points to the 
  391.         Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 definitions. The parameter 
  392.         "NAVDefDirNTWKS" points to the Norton AntiVirus for NT 
  393.         workstation definitions, and "NAVDefDirNTSRV" points to the 
  394.         Norton AntiVirus for NT server definitions.
  395.  3. Note the definitions directory to be updated. 
  396.  
  397.  Updating Definitions for Norton AntiVirus 2.0 
  398.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  399.  1. Map a drive letter to the network volume and directory containing 
  400.     the definitions to be updated. You must have WRITE access to the 
  401.     mapped drive.
  402.  2. Copy (do not Move) the mmddI16.EXE file to the mapped network 
  403.     definitions directory. The mmdd represents the date of the    
  404.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE 
  405.     for the December 31 definition set.
  406.  3. Open a command line session (DOS box) and change to the mapped 
  407.     drive containing the older definitions and the new Intelligent 
  408.     Updater program.
  409.  4. To update definitions type mmddI16 /DUMP.
  410.  5. Delete mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE) from the definitions 
  411.     directory.
  412.  
  413.  Updating Definitions for Norton AntiVirus 4.0 
  414.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  415.  1. Map a drive letter to the network volume and directory containing 
  416.     the definitions to be updated. You must have WRITE access to the 
  417.     mapped drive.

  430. X. Norton System Center
  431. =====================================================================
  432.  
  433.  See the Norton System Center documentation for instructions on 
  434.  distributing virus definitions with Central LiveUpdate. To 
  435.  distribute virus definition updates without Central LiveUpdate:
  436.  
  437.  1. Download the latest version of Intelligent Updater (v4.0).
  438.  
  439.  2. Copy Intelligent Updater to the definitions folder of your NSC 
  440.     installation. By default the location is the 
  441.     \NSC Repository\Products\NAV\Defs\Intel or Alpha folder.
  442.  
  443.  3. To avoid changing the job every time you update the definitions, 
  444.     rename the Intelligent Updater file as NEWDEFS.EXE and set the 
  445.     job to run this file. Otherwise you will always have to modify 
  446.     the job to use the correct file name. 
  447.  
  448.  4. Start Norton System Center and run your virus definitions rollout 
  449.     job. For more information on setting up NSC jobs, see your NSC
  450.     documentation.
  451.  
  452.  Whenever you want to distribute updated virus definitions, download 
  453.  a new Intelligent Updater, copy it to the source distribution 
  454.  folder, rename it NEWDEFS.EXE, and rerun the job. 
  455.

  458. XI. Norton AntiVirus for NT Server, DEC Alpha version
  459. =====================================================================
  460.  
  461. 1. Download the file mmddA32.ZIP.
  462. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  463.    \Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming 
  464. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  465.    definitions.

  468. XII. Norton AntiVirus for OS/2
  469. =====================================================================
  470.  
  471. 1. Download the file mmddO32.ZIP.
  472. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  473.    \SYMANTEC\COMMON\SHARED\VIRUSDEFS\INCOMING
  474. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  475.    definitions.

  478. XIII. Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
  479. =====================================================================
  480.  
  481.  If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus
  482.  definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to
  483.  extract the virus definition files, then copy the appropriate files
  484.  to the virus definitions folder. 
  485.  
  486.  Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
  487.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  488.  1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (mmddI16.EXE, mmddI161.EXE,
  489.     mmddI32.EXE, or mmddN16.EXE) to an empty, temporary folder.
  490.  
  491.  2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command. 
  492.     This will extract all the virus definitions to the folder. For 
  493.     example, type mmddI32.EXE /DUMP to extract the files. The mmdd 
  494.     represents the date of the definition set. For example, the 
  495.     filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  496.  
  497.  3. Copy the files to the virus definition folder. If you are using 
  498.     Norton AntiVirus 4.0 or 5.0 for Windows 95 / Windows NT Server &
  499.     Workstation, copy the files to this location:
  500.     C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming\
  501.  
  502.     NOTE: Copy the file ZDONE.DAT last. This file signals Norton
  503.     AntiVirus that the definition set has been completely loaded. If
