  34. SciTech Display Doctor is a collection of useful utilities that fix many 
  35. common problems associated with Super VGA (SVGA) graphics cards. SciTech 
  36. Display Doctor contains a number of separate components that make up the 
  37. entire package. You may already be familiar with UniVBE, the Universal 
  38. VESA BIOS Extension. UniVBE is now one of the many components that make 
  39. up the entire SciTech Display Doctor suite of utilities. 
  40. SciTech Display Doctor updates your graphics card to the latest 
  41. standards so you can be sure programs will work correctly and will run 
  42. as fast as possible on your system. Many popular games like The 11th 
  43. Hour, Quake and Duke Nukem 3D rely on the latest VESA graphics standards 
  44. in order to obtain the highest performance possible. 
  45. Please note that some of the terminology used in this document can be 
  46. very technical. If you have problems understanding any of the terms used 
  47. in the manual, you may want to refer to the glossary.

  49. Benefits of SciTech Display Doctor 
  50.  
  51. ò    Plug & Play. SciTech Display Doctor will automatically detect your 
  52. graphics card and make your SVGA software work properly. You donÆt have 
  53. to try and figure out what kind of graphics chip you have and then try 
  54. to track down your vendor for a possible software upgrade. If you ever 
  55. change your graphics card, SciTech Display Doctor will automatically 
  56. detect the change and reconfigure itself for your new hardware.
  57. ò    Compatibility. SciTech Display Doctor will make your graphics card 
  58. compatible with the latest standards. If your graphics card has bugs, 
  59. SciTech Display Doctor can fix them and make it so you can run your 
  60. favorite graphics applications without errors. 
  61. ò    Performance. SciTech Display Doctor will generally increase the 
  62. performance of all software that uses VESA VBE standards. If your 
  63. graphics card only supports an older version of the VESA VBE standard, 
  64. you will get significant additional performance improvements with 
  65. application software that uses the newer VBE 2.0 standard.
  66. ò    Money and Energy Saving. SciTech Display Doctor can save you money and 
  67. help the environment at the same time. It fully supports the VESA 
  68. hardware and software power management protocol standards (VBE/PM and 
  69. DPMS) for Energy Star compliance. It comes with the Green SaverÖ power 
  70. management screen saver that allows you to actually power down an Energy 
  71. Star compliant monitor when you are not using your computer. Since a 
  72. monitor uses 50-80% of the energy consumed in a computer system, Green 
  73. Saver can result in a substantial energy savings over the life of your 
  74. computer. Even the built in Windows 95 screen saver interface requires 
  75. VESA VBE/PM to work properly.
  76. ò    Full Screen AVIDirect Video Player. SciTech Display Doctor includes a 
  77. special Video for Windows player called AVIDirect that can run full 
  78. screen, full motion video, even on 486 systems without special video 
  79. acceleration hardware. 
  80. ò    3D and Video Acceleration in Software. SciTech Display Doctor enables 
  81. 3D and video acceleration in software by automatically create new 
  82. high-performance modes on your graphics card that allows software, 
  83. especially interactive games and digital video, to run faster and with 
  84. better quality than before. It does this by requiring applications to 
  85. move less data to the graphics card, while still maintaining high 
  86. quality graphics.
  87. ò    Protected Mode/Linear Buffer Support. Many of the latest programs 
  88. support VESA VBE 2.0Æs 32-bit protected mode interface giving you as 
  89. much as 2-3 times the performance of the older VESA interface. Very few 
  90. graphics cards have implemented the new VBE 2.0 standard yet, so SciTech 
  91. Display Doctor may be the only way that you can use the VESA VBE 2.0 
  92. standard for maximum graphics performance.
  93. ò    Accelerator Support. SciTech Display Doctor is the first product to 
  94. support the new VESA VBE/AF (Accelerator Functions) standard. VBE/AF 
  95. allows applications and operating systems to take advantage of full 
  96. graphics hardware acceleration, regardless if you are running DOS, 
  97. Windows, OS/2 or any other operating system. 
  98. ò    Display Centering. SciTech Display Doctor includes the UniCenterÖ 
  99. program for centering and sizing the display image on your monitor. 
  100. UniCenter allows you to adjust the centering and sizing for all video 
  101. modes supported by SciTech Display Doctor . ItÆs great for getting those 
  102. video modes to look just right on your monitor.
  103. ò    Refresh Rate Control. The UniCenter program also allows you to control 
  104. the refresh rate on most supported graphics cards, so you can set your 
  105. display for the highest possible flicker-free image in each graphics 
  106. mode.
  107. ò    Compatibility Testing. SciTech Display Doctor includes VBETest, the 
  108. de-facto standard test for compliance with VESA software standards. You 
  109. can test your graphics card with and without SciTech Display Doctor to 
  110. see if your graphics card is working properly. If your graphics card 
  111. driver fails VBETest, you will probably experience problems when trying 
  112. to run real world software.
  113. ò    Performance Profiling. SciTech Display Doctor includes display 
  114. profiling programs that allow you to test raw bandwidth of your graphics 
  115. subsystem. The profiling programs are low-level hardware oriented tests 
  116. that can tell you the baseline performance level of your card.

  118. WhatÆs new since version 5.2?  
  119. ò    If you are using SciTech Display Doctor 5.2, the 5.3 version of the 
  120. product basically includes a number of bugs fixes and support for more 
  121. graphics cards. Below are some of the features and bug fixes that we 
  122. have added for SciTech Display Doctor 5.3:
  123. ò    DOS based installation available for DOS only and OS/2 systems. 
  124. ò    Installation program now runs under Windows NT (installs DOS programs 
  125. and help files). 
  126. ò    Fully integrated 16 and 32-bit Windows Control Center 
  127. ò    More video cards are detected and supported (see below for list) 
  128. ò    Addition of new WinDirect safe mode and better compatibility support 
  129. for WinDirect. 
  130. ò    Global refresh rate control for low resolution modes (up to 120Hz for 
  131. LCD shutter glasses). 
  132. ò    Refresh rate control and centering now supported for all low 
  133. resolutions modes. 
  134. ò    Config program now automatically updates resident copy of UniVBE with 
  135. changes. 
  136. ò    Performance profiler now includes logging functions. 
  137. ò    Updated #9 Imagine 128 series I support to allow mapping of registers 
  138. outside of C800h. 
  139. ò    Updated #9 Imagine 128 support to use Cirrus chip for banked modes so 
  140. old games run properly. 
  141. ò    TrueColor pixel formatÆs now change correctly when forced.
