  33. Installation Procedures

  35. Now, let's get you up and running!  Bölz! must have a certain directory
  36. structure in order to run.  We have created BINSTALL.EXE to help you get
  37. this game set up correctly on your hard drive.
  38.  
  39. From the DOS prompt in this directory, please type BINSTALL then press
  40. ENTER.  Following the on-screen directions, the first thing you should do
  41. is tell BINSTALL where you would like to put Bölz!  Simply pressing Enter
  42. will accept the default of C:\BOLZ.  If you have another directory or drive
  43. where you'd rather have Bölz! installed, please type the full pathname in
  44. standard DOS format into this text field.

  46. Let's say you wanted to put Bölz! on drive D: in the directory of 
  47. \GAMES\BOLZ.  All you have to do is press the backspace key a few times to
  48. clear out this text field then type:  D:\GAMES\BOLZ and press Enter.  You
  49. will asked if you are sure this is where you want to put Bölz!  If you are
  50. sure, then press Y for "Yes."  If not, or if you've changed your mind, press
  51. N for "No."

  53. Once you have confirmed where you want to install Bölz!, the installation
  54. will begin automatically.  You will see the progress indicated on the screen,
  55. and when this is done -- you're ready to play the game!!

  57. BINSTALL will tell you what the command is to start Bölz!  Usually, a small
  58. batch file will be created in the root directory of drive C: named BOLZ.BAT
  59. which will take care of everything for you.  All you'll usually need to type
  60. is C:\BOLZ.BAT then press Enter to enjoy the game.

  62. If you ever change sound cards or would otherwise like to reconfigure the
  63. options of Bölz!, simply run BSETUP in your Bölz! directory.  Follow the
  64. on-screen prompts.

  68. Technical Notes
  69. =============================================================================
  70. Bölz! is a "Protected Mode" video game.  This means that we were able to
  71. put _more_ game into a DOS-based video game.
  72.  
  73. If your system has at least 2 megabytes of free RAM when you run Bölz!, every-
  74. thing will be just fine.  It doesn't matter if it's Extended RAM or Expanded
  75. RAM or Conventional RAM -- don't worry about that.  If you have 2 megabytes
  76. of RAM available _somewhere_, we'll find it!
  77.  
  78. Because of the sound system we used in this video game (fully digital sound
  79. track, no FM synthesis used!), you will not be able to run Bölz! while
  80. running Windows 3.x.  Windows 95 (maybe) promises that you'll be able to run
  81. all of your DOS software, however, and this is not yet tested -- so we
  82. can't comment on it.  If you are running Windows 4.0, Chicago, or whatever
  83. the giant has decided to name it upon release, give Bölz! a try!  It might
  84. work under this new operating system.

  86. Generally, though, you'll want to exit Windows entirely until you see the
  87. black DOS screen - usually with the prompt:

  91. displayed on your screen.  It is _here_, at the DOS prompt, that you will
  92. type "C:\BOLZ.BAT" (without the quotes) and press Enter to run Bölz!
  93.  
  94. Also, Bölz! has proven itself to be somewhat unstable under the Quarterdeck
  95. QEMM program.  This program is a high-performance replacement for DOS's
  96. EMM386.EXE Exanded Memory Driver.  If you are using QEMM to manage your
  97. Expanded Memory, please boot your system "clean," without loading QEMM.  We
  98. have not tested Bölz! under any other memory managers, but if it simply
  99. "locks" or does not perform with stability, a good guess would be to remove
  100. any non-DOS memory managers you may be using.

  102. Bölz! will not, usually, run in an OS/2 or OS/2 Warp DOS box.  You will need
  103. to boot your system using the alternate DOS boot in order to play Bölz!  We
  104. apologize for this minor inconvenience.
