- b) Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.1 and higher
- c) Other HTML 3.x or higher compatible browsers
-
- NOTE: If you are using a 16 bit browser to test your site locally, you may not be able to
- see pages or content that is output using some of the long HTML file names often
- generated by NetObjects Fusion. However, these sites will appear correctly to your site
- visitors who are using 16 bit browsers to view your site after you have published it to a
- remote location. You will not be able to take advantage of this feature with this trial
- version of NetObjects Fusion 3.0, since the publishing functionality has been disabled.
-
-
- =================
-
- B) Uninstalling a Previous Version of NetObjects Fusion
-
- Before uninstalling, please export the sites you wish to migrate as Templates. This
- procedure is fully explained in the 2.x Help system and your 2.x User Guide. If you have
- sufficient hard disk space, you may install 3.0 trial into a separate folder and keep 2.x
- installed, however, once you migrate a site into 3.0 trial, this site is not backwards
- compatible.
-
- For Windows 95 and NT 4.0 Users: To uninstall NetObjects Fusion, launch Add/Remove
- Programs from your Control Panel and select NetObjects Fusion 2.0, 2.0.1 or 2.0.2. The
- Uninstaller will not delete any site files (.NOD) or SiteStyles you have created and will
- leave the /User Sites folder intact.
-
- For Windows NT 3.51 Users: Click on the Uninstall Icon in the NetObjects Fusion
- program group. The Uninstaller will not delete any site files (.NOD) or SiteStyles you
- have created and will leave the /User Sites folder intact.
-
- During Uninstallation, if you encounter a message asking to confirm the removal of any
- .dll or system files, we recommend that you choose Yes.
-
-
- =====================
-
- C) Installing NetObjects Fusion 3.0 Trial
-
- There are several ways to install NetObjects Fusion 3.0 trial. Please choose the scenario
- below that is most appropriate for you:
-
- 1) You have never installed NetObjects Fusion before:
-
- If you have downloaded NetObjects Fusion 3.0 Trial from the Web, double click on the
- .exe file. If you downloaded the segmented version of this .exe, make sure you have all
- the segments and then double click on the FIRST .exe. Launching this .exe (1 of X) will
- begin the unzip process. From that point on, follow the on-screen instructions.
-
- If you have a NetObjects Fusion 3.0 Trial CD-ROM, insert it in your CD-ROM drive.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. The necessary files will be installed by default in
- C:/NetObjects Fusion 3.0 trial. You may choose a different local drive and/or a different
- folder.
-
- We highly recommend that you do NOT install the 3.0 trial on a network drive.
-
-
- 2) You are currently running the pre-release version of NetObjects Fusion 3.0
-
- Export your sites as templates (.NFT files) as a backup.
-
- Uninstall your pre-release version. This will free up disk space and will keep your \User
- Sites folder intact.
-
- -----------
-
- 3) You are currently running the trial version of NetObjects Fusion 2.0, 2.0.1, or 2.0.2:
-
- Export your sites as templates (.NFT files) as a backup.
-
- Uninstall your trial version. This will free up disk space and will keep your \User Sites
- folder intact.
-
- -----------
-
- 4) You are currently running the shipping version of NetObjectsFusion 1.0:
-
- NetObjects Fusion 3.0 trial will not open your 1.0 site files; you need to first open them
- in 2.0.2. You must therefore first contact Customer Service to purchase a more recent
- version of NetObjects Fusion. There is a free upgrade from 1.0 to 2.0.2. Then, for 2.0.2
- customers, there is a $99 upgrade to 3.0.
-
-
- ========================
-
- D) Migrating site files from NetObjects Fusion 2.x
-
- If you have existing site files (*.NOD, *.NFT) that originated in NetObjects Fusion for
- Windows versions: 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2, or 2.0.2 (single-byte) international or that originated
- in NetObjects Fusion for Macintosh versions: 2.0.1 or 2.0.2, you have two options;
-
- 1) Open them using File | Open Site... from the Welcome dialog or the Site view
-
- When you do this, you will be presented with a dialog saying that the file was created in
- an older version of NetObjects Fusion and that you have an option to make a copy of it.
- Click Yes and then give it a new name in the next dialog box.
-
- When you open, preview, publish, or navigate through the copy of this site, you may
- receive dialogs that warn you about instability.
-
- If you get any of these dialogs, the site became unstable in a PREVIOUS version of
- NetObjects Fusion. To rectify this situation you have three choices:
-
- a) Exit 3.0 trial and use the procedure in #2 below.
-
- b) Exit 3.0 trial and create a new site based from your previously published HTML.
- >From the Site view, choose File | New Site... From Local Import if your HTML is local or
- >From Remote Import if your HTML is on a web server. Please note that this technique
- requires manual cleanup. For example, some of the spacer images (auto-generated GIFs)
- will appear as thin lines on your pages and will need to be deleted manually.
-
- c) Exit 3.0 trial and create a New Site based on blank site, and recreate the site from
- scratch
-
- 2) Open it in a new way. First, create a New Site based on blank site. Then, follow the
- procedure outlined in recover.txt.
-
- This text file is located in your /NetObjects Fusion 3.0 trial folder.
-
- NOTE: Sites (*.NOD, *.NFT) that originated in NetObjects Fusion for Macintosh 1.0 or
- Windows 1.0 will NOT open in NOF3.0 trial. You must first migrate them through NOF
- 2.0.2. Also, although sites from NOF 2.0.2 (double-byte) Japanese, Chinese, etc. will
- open, it is not recommended that you open these files in NOF3.
-
-
- =============================
-
- E) Migrating site files from NetObjects Team Fusion 1.0
-
-
- NetObjects Team Fusion 1.0 NFT files can be opened in NetObjects
- Fusion 3.0. Since NetObjects Team Fusion 1.0 NOD files reside
- on an authoring server, to migrate these sites, you first need
- to export each as a NFT. Then, in NetObjects Fusion 3.0, you can
- either import the NFT as a section of your site or base a new
- site off this NFT.
-
- NOTE: If you want to use any of the SiteStyles that ship with
- NetObjects Team Fusion 1.0 or custom styles that you created in
- TF, you will need to manually copy them from the authoring server
- (using File Manager or Windows Explorer) to the computer where
- NetObjects Fusion 3.0 is installed. These SiteStyles must reside
- in the /Styles folder.
-
-
-
- ==============================
-
- F) Putting certain JavaScript scripts in your layouts
-
- The JavaScript functions document.write() and document.writeln() will not work in
- Navigator 2.x or 3.x when NetObjects Fusion generates your pages using the Nested
- Tables HTML output method. If you are using these scripts, be sure to output your site
- using the Regular Tables method in Page View.
-
-
- ==============================
-
- G) Usage - YOU MUST READ THIS!
-
- 1) NetObjects Fusion 3.0 trial, is optimized for Web sites containing 500 pages or less. If
- your site contains more than 500 pages, we recommend that you divide it into multiple
- sites of less than 500 pages each. You can then connect them by using External Links.
- For ideas on how to achieve this, please refer to http://www.netobjects.com/howsite
-
- 2) NetObjects Fusion 3.0 trial antialiases fonts in Navigation bars, Banners and other
- autogenerated images by relying on system resources. The two technologies that our
- customers use are Microsoft Font Smoother and Adobe Type Manager. Font Smoother
- will antialias (or smooth the edges of) TrueType fonts when running NOF3 on Windows
- NT 4.0. Adobe Type Manager 4.0 will smooth PostScript (Type 1) fonts when running
- NOF3 on Windows 95 or NT. The lite version of ATM 4.0 is available directly from
- Adobe for $10.99, but does not include any fonts. If you already have PostScript fonts,
- this is the recommended solution because it yields better results than MS Font Smoother
- at all font sizes, especially sizes smaller than 10 point. However, if you are running
- NOF3 on Windows 95 and need to have your TrueType fonts antialiased, you will need
- to do so manually for each graphic in an external paint program and use the Custom
- Image button on the banner or nav bar properties palette for substitution.
-
- 3) NetObjects Fusion components require your site to be published, either locally or
- remotely, to be viewed. If you preview, you will see a placeholder graphic in the
- generated HTML page reminding you that you need to publish to view the actual
- component. This graphic is placed in the same space that the component will occupy on
- the published page. Because the publishing feature has been disabled in this trial version
- ofNetObjects Fusion 3.0, you will not be able to take full advantage of components.
- Also, components that require pictures may not work if the image files have spaces in
- their file names. Please use Windows Explorer or the File Manager to make sure your
- image file names do not contain spaces.
-
- 4) HTML Import - several issues: HTML files must not contain spaces in their file
- names; Source files in the HTML (e.g., pictures, applets) must not have illegal characters
- in their file names such as %,*&;. Some remote sites use "robots", special scripts, to
- restrict HTML importation. NetObjects Fusion 3.0 trial abides by this and therefore will
- inform you if a site is using robots. Layouts of HTML that contain tags outside of the
- HTML 3.2 specification will not be supported (e.g. CSS Text style tags, Layer tags, CSS
- Positioning tags). The text and source files will appear in the Page view but the original
- layout will not be maintained. Once on the NetObjects Fusion page, you will be able to
- reposition the text and source files manually.
-
- 5) Server Side components such as the message board and forms handler components
- will not be able to be used with the trial version of NetObjects Fusion 3.0, since they will
- not be able to be published.
-
- 6) The table tool now assumes that a text box is the default container for each cell. As a
- result, row heights cannot be less than one character high. If you wish to make a row
- taller than the content it contains, you will need to make sure that each text box in that
- row has [x] Lock height selected in the Text Box tab. Also, column widths cannot be less
- than one character wide.
-
- 7) If you import an HTML site that contains frames, the frames
- will not be converted to AutoFrames. Instead, all the content
- for each frame will exist in separate pages. The frameset
- will be the parent for these pages. This parent will be an
- external page. To edit the frameset, just double click.
- The parent and child pages will be labeled accordingly in Site
- view. To reuse this content, select all, cut, navigate to the
- body page, click in the appropriate master border margin and
- then paste in that margin.
-
- 8) When using transparent GIFs, be sure that the colors of the foreground image AND the
- transparent color are both from the 216 Color Browser Safe Web Palette. This palette is
- included in the NOF3 color picker.
-
- 9) NetObjects Fusion sites are designed to be worked on locally. Please make sure that
- you have sufficient disk space to store your NOD and associated files on the same hard
- disk where NetObjects Fusion is installed. Working from a network drive or a removable
- drive such as SyQuest and Iomega drives is to be avoided. Some customers have chosen
- to mount their removable drives as fixed disks. Although this is less risky, NetObjects
- strongly recommends against it.
-
- 10) Active X control warnings: NetObjects Fusion allows customers to place Active X
- controls on the page and visually edit their parameters. NetObjects does not have control
- over the quality of the various Controls (.OCX files) that may be installed on your
- system. For example the following Active X controls are known to cause problems with
- NetObjects Fusion 3.0 trial: - MapViewProperty will crash when placing the control on
- the page - Real Media Active X player control may be deleted from page view during
- mode to mode switching
-
- 11) Active X Controls that require source files (e.g., Adobe Acrobat PDF, Macromedia
- Shockwave Flash) will not publish correctly unless you add the source file using Assets
- view first. Click the Files tab and then click the New button. Give the source file a name
- and then browse for it. Be sure to select "Always Publish File" and then in Publish view,
- be sure to put the source file in the same folder as the .ocx file. Since this requires assets
- pathing, you will need to locally (or remotely) publish to test these types of Active X
- Controls. Because publishing has been disabled in this trial version of NetObjects Fusion
- 3.0, you will not be able to take advantage of these Active X controls. Previewing these
- components may not work.
-
- 12) When importing template files (.NFT) from NetObjects Team Fusion 1.0, there may
- be problems with text formatting on banner and navigation buttons.
-
- 13) NetObjects Fusion no longer relies on the .bak file for backup. However, a temporary
- file called sitename.NOD.bak is created while your NOD file is open and being edited.
- As soon as you exit and your site is completely closed, this .bak file is deleted. Please
- rely on the new automatic backup feature which places backup NOD files in a folder
- called /Backups. If you ever need to use a backup NOD file, be sure to first drag it from
- /Backups into your /User Sites/Sitename folder before opening so all the assets will be
- pathed correctly.
-
- 14) The default method of closing a NetObjects Fusion site involves compacting the
- NOD file. This occurs by default when exiting NetObjects Fusion or opening a different
- 3.0 trial site. When compact starts, NetObjects Fusion 3.0 trial lets you know that it is
- still working with a progress dialog box. If you do not see this progress dialog box
- immediately, it may be obscured by other open windows on your display. If you attempt
- to multi-task when this dialog box is present, you may experience some sluggishness. If
- this sluggishness exists, it is only temporary and will last as long as it takes NetObjects
- Fusion to compact. A typical compaction takes 30 seconds but can be up to 2 minutes if
- the site consists of hundreds of pages.
-
- WARNING: IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO NOT END TASK OR SHUT DOWN WINDOWS DURING THE COMPACT PROCESS
-
- If you wish to avoid sluggishness during closing, go to the Edit | Preferences | Backup
- Tab and de-select [ ] Compact database upon exit. If you do this, please note that you
- will not benefit from database verification during compaction.
-
- 15) There is an error in the documentation which states that
- there is a /Developer folder inside the /NetObjects Fusion
- 3.0 folder. This is incorrect. There is no /Developer folder.
-
- 16) If you reference an external HTML page that has contents
- within its <HEAD> section, in some cases the <HEAD> may get
- replaced even if you choose the Append to Current <HEAD>
- option in the Reference HTML Page dialog drop down menu.
- The referenced page's <HEAD> content is replaced automatically
- if you are using a MasterBorder with zero margins.
-
- 17) If you reference an external HTML page, Replace Current
- <HEAD> is the only option available if the page's
- MasterBorder is of zero margins and the Size to Layout
- checkbox is selected.
-
- 18) Migrating sites that contain earlier versions of the
- AutoForm and Form Handler components: If a NOD file from an
- earlier version of NOF contains an AutoForm or Form Handler
- component, the component may lose the Success and Error links
- once this NOD is opened in NOF3. To resolve, just re-assign
- the Success URL and Error URL parameters using the Form Handler
- component's properties palette in NOF3.
-
- 19) Because NOF3 is not a MDI application, you should not run
- two concurrent sessions. If you do, you run the risk of poor
- performance and possible file instability. Components
- especially should not be copied and pasted between two
- different sessions of NOF3 running concurrently.
-
