The primary role of these red blood cells is to carry oxygen to the body. Blood is composed of red and white cells and platelets, but these rouge beauties are by far the most numerous. Red cells are produced in the bone marrow and contain mostly hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen. After a life of about four months, they break up and are destroyed by white cells through a process known as phagocytosis. ìÄ
