  43. 1. System Requirements/Overview
  44. ============================================
  45. The minimum requirements for Microsoft Scenes are a 386SX
  46. running Windows 3.1 and a VGA display, 3 megabytes (MB)
  47. of available disk space and 2 MB of available random-access
  48. memory (RAM).
  49.  
  50. For the best-looking pictures, make sure your display
  51. adapter, driver and monitor support 256 colors or more. Scenes
  52. will also display on 16-color VGA displays; however, the colors
  53. will be noticeably limited and will not match the original colors
  54. of the pictures.
  55.  
  56. To display pictures at full screen size (up to 1024 x 768 pixels),
  57. select the Enlarge pictures to full screen size option in the Screen 
  58. Saver Settings dialog.  
  59.  
  60. Scenes utilizes image compression and palette fitting technology
  61. to produce very high quality images--even on systems with 
  62. relatively modest hardware configurations. Palette fitting is a
  63. process that selects the best mix of colors for each image 
  64. on a 256 color (8Bit) display. Depending on the speed of your 
  65. computer, these operations can take anywhere from a few seconds 
  66. to 5 minutes. Enlarging pictures to full screen size in high 
  67. resolution video modes requires even more time. To display pictures 
  68. as quickly as possible, set your display to more than 256 colors 
  69. and disable the Enlarge picture to full screen size option.
  70.

  94. 2. Troubleshooting Tips
  95. =============================================
  96. This section supplements the Troubleshooting section of Microsoft 
  97. Scenes 2.0 Help.
  98.  
  99. Insufficient disk space to install Scenes
  100. ------------------------------------------------
  101.  
  102. If there is insufficient disk space to install the Scenes software 
  103. and images, a "Not Enough Space on Drive [drive]:" dialog is 
  104. displayed. Since Scenes does not support component level setup, 
  105. selecting the Change Options button simply returns Setup to 
  106. the main Installation dialog. To solve this problem, free up disk 
  107. space. 
  108.  
  109. If you are installing multiple Scenes Collections, you 
  110. can save disk space by specifying the existing Scenes directory 
  111. when installing a new collection. In this way, you will require 
  112. just enough disk space to store and display the new images, 
  113. and only one copy of the Scenes screen saver software will 
  114. reside on your system.
  115.  
  116. If not enough memory is available to run Scenes
  117. -----------------------------------------------
  118. For proper operation, Scenes requires 2 MB of available
  119. memory. You may be able to free up some memory by closing
  120. other applications. If you are running Scenes on a system 
  121. with disk compression and you get a message saying not enough
  122. memory is available to run the Scenes screen saver, the
  123. About Program Manager dialog box may still indicate that
  124. you have more than 2 MB of memory available. Choose the
  125. About command from the Scenes Control menu to see the
  126. available memory that Scenes can actually use.
  127.  
  128. Under low memory conditions, Scenes will make every attempt to
  129. display images. For example, when there is not enough memory 
  130. to enlarge an image to full screen size, Scenes will display 
  131. the image without enlarging it. Scenes adapts dynamically to
  132. changes in available memory, so some images may appear enlarged
  133. and others may not, depending upon available memory and the
  134. memory requirements of a particular image.
  135.  
  136. Attempting to display very large graphics files will also result
  137. in "Out of Memory" errors. Scenes cannot display images larger
  138. than 16MB uncompressed.
  139.  
  140. Running out of memory on a regular basis may be a result of
  141. how your system is set up. For more information on potential
  142. solutions, see "If not enough memory is available" in the
  143. Troubleshooting section of the Microsoft Scenes Help.
  144.  
  145. If you have problems printing when Scenes is running
  146. ----------------------------------------------------
  147. If printing appears to stop, the printer you are using may be
  148. shared on a network in which the server is running Scenes.
  149. To correct this in Windows version 3.1, open Print Manager,
  150. and, from the Options menu, choose High Priority. In Windows
  151. for Workgroups, open Print Manager, choose Background
  152. Printing from the Options menu, and then select High for
  153. the Printing Priority.
  154.  
  155. If the screen saver doesn't cancel immediately
  156. ----------------------------------------------
  157. Running other applications while using Microsoft Scenes can
  158. occasionally slow the process of displaying pictures or the
  159. time Scenes takes to start and stop the screen saver.
  160. Compilers or communications-intensive applications are
  161. particularly likely to affect the performance of Scenes.
  162.  
  163. Increasing the time between picture transitions will reduce
  164. the likelihood of a delay when canceling the screen saver and
  165. returning to Windows. To increase the transition time, set the
  166. Change picture every [n] minutes setting to a larger number.
  167.  
  168. If the screen-saver pictures do not appear to change
  169. ----------------------------------------------------
  170. You may have selected a personal picture set that contains just
  171. one picture as your screen saver. If this is the case, Microsoft
  172. Scenes "changes" from the current picture to the same picture.
  173. In this situation, you will not be able to see the transition
  174. effects because the image remains unchanged. To avoid this, select
  175. a picture set with more than one picture, such as a Microsoft
  176. Scenes collection, or select more than one collection for display
  177. in the Screen Saver Settings dialog.
  178.  
  179. Displaying non-standard JPEG files
  180. ---------------------------------------------
  181. Certain graphics applications are capable of saving JPEG files 
  182. that contain extensions to the standard JPEG file format. 
  183. Some of the products from Adobe, Altimera and Fauve are 
  184. examples of such applications. These images may not display 
  185. properly in Scenes. In some cases Scenes will not be able to 
  186. open the file, in others, the colors in the image will not display 
  187. properly. If you are having problems displaying a JPEG file, 
  188. it is likely that the application that generated the file did not 
  189. conform to the JPEG standard. You may be able to correct this 
  190. problem by opening the JPEG file in the original application, 
  191. turning off all non-standard JPEG options, and saving to 
  192. JPEG again.
  193.  
  194. If an application's password dialog box loses focus when you
  195. start Windows
  196. --------------------------------------------------------------
  197. Starting Windows automatically starts all applications with icons
  198. in the StartUp group, beginning with the icon in the top-left
  199. corner of the group. If an application with a password
  200. dialog box, such as Microsoft Mail or Microsoft Schedule+, has
  201. an icon before the Scenes icon in the StartUp group, you may 
  202. have to activate the application's Sign In dialog box before
  203. you can type your password. To correct this, move the Scenes
  204. icon to the top-left corner of the StartUp group.
  205.  
  206. If you cannot see part of the captions, wallpaper, or
  207. Picture Information window
  208. ------------------------------------------------------------
  209. Check to see that the vertical and horizontal alignment on your
  210. monitor are set properly. If you are using a high-resolution
  211. "virtual" display, you may need to pan up to see the captions
  212. or pan down and right to see the Picture Information window.
  213. To display your wallpaper correctly, pan until the wallpaper
  214. is centered on your screen.
  215.

  218. 3. Software Compatibility Issues
  219. =============================================
  220.  
  221. Converting Scenes 1.0 collections to 2.0
  222. ------------------------------------------------------------
  223. To convert Scenes 1.0 collections, install Scenes 2.0 and use
  224. the 'Add a collection to Scenes' Wizard. Your 1.0 collection will
  225. be converted to the 2.0 format. After conversion, the collection
  226. can be viewed with either Scenes 1.0 or Scenes 2.0. Scenes 2.0 
  227. collections are not compatible with the Scenes 1.0 software.
  228.  
  229. Running multiple screen savers
  230. ------------------------------
  231. If more than one screen saver is running at a time, unpredictable
  232. things can happen. Before starting another screen saver, make 
  233. sure you exit Scenes. 
  234.  
  235. Starting the Scenes screen saver from the Windows Control Panel
  236. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  237. You can run Scenes 2.0 from the Windows Control Panel's
  238. Desktop applet. This is a convenient way to take advantage of
  239. many of the screen saver features and at the same time utilize
  240. minimum system resources. 
  241.  
  242. To run Scenes from the Control Panel, exit Scenes. Launch the 
  243. Desktop applet from the Control Panel and select Microsoft 
  244. Scenes 2.0 as the screen saver. Select the Settings button to 
  245. change the Scenes screen saver options.
  246.  
  247. MS-DOS, version 6.0 or Central Point Software's PC Tools
  248. Delete Protection
  249. -------------------------------------------------------
  250. If you use the MS-DOS version 6.0 or if you use PC Tools
  251. Undelete option and the Sentry Tracker option, configure
  252. Data Sentry to exclude these files from those that Data
  253. Sentry protects: 
  254. MSSCENES.BMP, *.TMP, *.BAK, *.BKJ, *.BKT, *.BKN, ~MSS*.BMP, 
  255. and -*.TMP. For details, consult your documentation for MS-DOS 
  256. version 6.0 or PC Tools for Windows.
  257.  
  258. DOS sessions
  259. ----------------------------------
  260. If you are running a DOS session full screen, the Scenes screen 
  261. saver will not start automatically and the Keyboard QuickStart 
  262. will not function. If you run a DOS session window only the 
  263. Mouse QuickStart will function.
  264.  
  265. Communications activity
  266. -----------------------
  267. If you are downloading files from CompuServe or anticipate 
  268. other prolonged communications or network-related activities,
  269. turn the screen saver option off. This will ensure that your
  270. connections are not interrupted unnecessarily when Scenes
  271. is running.
  272.  
  273. Desktop shells
  274. --------------
  275. If you are running a Windows desktop shell, do not install
  276. Scenes from a virtual screen or run Scenes maximized (i.e.,
  277. full screen.)
  278.  
  279. If you are running from a shell, it might hide the Scenes
  280. wallpaper title. Minimizing the desktop icon may correct
  281. this problem. If you cannot see the title, you can view a
  282. picture's title in the picture description window by
  283. choosing Show picture descriptions from the main Scenes
  284. dialog.
  285.  
  286. If you use Central Point PC Tools for Windows, do not run
  287. utilities which run on a schedule, such as Anti-Virus,
  288. while the Scenes screen saver is active.
  289.  
  290. If you are running Xerox Tabworks, you may encounter 
  291. errors when using the Scenes wizards. If this problem 
  292. persists, use a different shell, such as Windows 
  293. Program Manager.
  294.  
  295. Wallpaper color quality
  296. -----------------------------------------------
  297. When using any palette-intensive application while in 8Bit 
  298. display mode, the palette for the Scenes wallpaper may lose 
  299. some of its colors, degrading the quality of the wallpaper. 
  300. This may occur when you activate an application dialog or 
  301. icon that is currently utilizing many colors. For best wallpaper 
  302. quality, minimize palette-intensive applications and change
  303. the focus to a non-palette application or application icon such 
  304. as Program Manager. 
  305.  
  306. In 8Bit display mode, the active application window will 
  307. determine the colors needed for optimal display of its graphics.
  308. Any other windows (and the wallpaper) will then be forced 
  309. to use this palette of colors. If you frequently use 256 color 
  310. applications and this presents a problem for you, turn off 
  311. the Scenes wallpaper feature while you work.
  312.  
  313. ============================================
  314. 4. Hardware Compatibility Issues
  315. ============================================
  316.  
  317. ATI Display Drivers
  318. -------------------
  319. The ATI Mach 32 FlexDesk driver build 2.2 may cause intermittent 
  320. problems while running Scenes. Please contact your video display 
  321. adapter manufacturer regarding problems with your display driver.
  322.  
  323. If you are using a Mach 32 driver and you get a message
  324. in Setup or the Microsoft Scenes dialog box stating that
  325. you may be able to make your pictures look better, open the 
  326. Mach 32 Control Panel (FlexDesk). Make sure that your screen
  327. resolution is set to 256 colors or more and that the
  328. 256-color palette has been turned on in the Advanced
  329. dialog box.
  330.  
  331. If you're using the Mach 32 driver in 640x480 mode, select
  332. the Small Font option. This will make the dialog boxes
  333. and Microsoft Scenes Online Help easier to read.
  334.  
  335. If you are using any ATI driver with Crystal fonts, a message
  336. will appear in Scenes stating that you could make your pictures
  337. look better. To display Scenes with 256 colors, turn off
  338. Crystal fonts or select a driver without Crystal fonts.
  339.  
  340. Number 9 GXE video display adapter
  341. ----------------------------------
  342. This display adapter may exhibit minor screen artifacts 
  343. when using the Scenes In & Out Box transition effects.
  344.  
  345. Diamond Stealth 64Bit display adapter
  346. -------------------------------------
  347. When running this adapter in 8Bit (256 color) mode, certain 
  348. Scenes transition effects may be very slow. For optimal 
  349. performance with this adapter, select a video mode with more
  350. than 256 colors.
  351.  
  352. Laptop computers with desktop docking stations
  353. ----------------------------------------------
  354. Some laptop computers that use desktop "docking stations" may
  355. be able to use a video card attached to the docking station.
  356. However, that card may offer resolutions that are not available
  357. when the laptop is used by itself. For example, when docked, 
  358. your computer may be able to display 256 colors; as a laptop,
  359. the same computer may be limited to 16 colors. Before removing
  360. the laptop from the docking station, change your display driver
  361. to one that the laptop is capable of using.
  362.  
  363.
