  40. * Installation
  41.  
  42.    Netscape Navigator 3.0 is being distributed as both
  43.    a  16-bit  Windows  program  and  a  32-bit Windows
  44.    program.  Both the  16-bit and  32-bit versions  of
  45.    Netscape  are  shipped  in  a  Premium package that
  46.    includes Plug-ins, and a Standard package that does
  47.    not include Plug-ins.
  48.  
  49.    If  you  are  running  Windows  3.x  or Windows for
  50.    Workgroups, you MUST use  the 16-bit Navigator even
  51.    if you  have Win32s installed.  If you are  running
  52.    Windows 95 or Windows NT, use the 32-bit Navigator.
  53.    To run the 32bit Navigator,  you MUST have a 32-bit
  54.    TCP/IP stack.
  55.  
  56.    Both  Windows 95  and Windows  NT provide  built-in
  57.    32bit  TCP/IP stacks  that you  can setup.  You can
  58.    also get (32 bit)  TCP/IP software from third party
  59.    vendors like Trumpet Software, and Ftp Software.

  61.    To  obtain a  copy of  Netscape Navigator, download
  62.    one of the self-extracting  executable files into a
  63.    temporary directory.

  82.    installation process.

  85. this release, you will  get multiple uninstall entries

  87. multiple entries, you should do an uninstall to remove
  88. your previous  version of Netscape  before you install

  91. * The  Netscape Audio  Plug-in will  only work  if you
  92. have a  sound card installed  and configured properly.
  93. It will  not work with  the PC speaker  driver. Please

  98. then  you  must  uninstall  the  version  you have and
  99. reboot  your  machine  before  installing  the  latest

  102. using early Windows95 drivers.  Make sure that you are
  103. running version 2.22.039 or above.

  168. What do I need to run Netscape Navigator?
  169.  
  170. You must have a  direct Internet connection before you
  171. can  use Netscape.  The  ability  to send  and receive
  172. e-mail does not necessarily mean you can run Netscape.
  173. There are three requirements for Netscape Navigator:
  174.  
  175.     1. A  direct Ethernet connection to  the net, or a
  176.     dialup
  177.  
  178.        SLIP  or PPP  account from  an Internet service
  179.        provider.
  180.  
  181.     2. TCP/IP stack
  182.  
  183.     3. Netscape Navigator software
  184.  
  185. You  can  get  a  direct  connection  to  the Internet
  186. through a service provider in your area. You will need
  187. to  get  a  SLIP  or  a  PPP  account from an Internet
  188. provider (for a dialup account).
  189.  
  190. When you have full  Internet connectivity, you need to
  191. have a TCP/IP stack, dialer, and WINSOCK.DLL file.
  192.  
  193. If you get the error message "Cannot find WINSOCK.DLL"
  194. when  running  Netscape  Navigator,  this  means  your
  195. computer is looking for  the WINSOCK.DLL file which is
  196. part of the winsock package.
  197.

  200. =====================================================

  202. The  Netscape installer  will overwrite  existing OLE2
  203. DLLs  with the  latest versions  for US  Windows. This
  204. will  not affect  32-bit Windows.  For 16-bit Windows,
  205. the only  difference between the  US and the  Japanese
  206. versions   are  the   internationalization  of   error
  207. strings.  Occasionally, the  Japanese user  may see an
  208. English language  OLE2 error message  after installing
  209. Netscape.  Currently, there  are no  Japanese versions
  210. available for the OLE2  DLLs. Netscape is working with
  211. Microsoft  to make  the Japanese  version of  the OLE2
  212. DLLs available.

  215.      Information about the Quicktime Plug-in
  216. ======================================================

  219. This part describes what you  will need and how to use
  220. the Windows version of  Apple's QuickTime plug-ins for
  221. Netscape Navigator 3.0.
  222.  
  223. WHAT THE QUICKTIME PLUG-IN DOES:
  224.  
  225. Apple's QuickTime  plug-in for Netscape  Navigator 3.0
  226. or  later   lets  you  experience   QuickTime  content
  227. directly  in  the  Navigator  browser  window.  You no
  228. longer need a "helper application" like MoviePlayer to
  229. view  QuickTime content  with Navigator  3.0. You  can
  230. also view  QuickTime VR Panoramas  and Objects inline,
  231. after  downloading  the  QuickTime  VR  component from
  232. Apple.  As  a  web  developer,  you  can  control  the
  233. QuickTime  playback experience  through HTML commands.
  234. You can  choose to have  a movie automatically  played
  235. for a  user, or present a  controller giving users the
  236. ability to play, stop, fastforward, and rewind.
  237.  
  238. The  QuickTime plug-in  works with  existing QuickTime
  239. movies, and with movies  prepared to take advantage of
  240. the plug-in's  "fast start" feature.  The "fast start"
  241. feature  will present  the  first  frame of  the movie
  242. almost immediately  and can begin  playing even before
  243. the  movie has  been completely  downloaded. The "fast
  244. start" feature  saves you time waiting  for the entire
  245. movie  to  download,  but  otherwise  plays  just like
  246. regular QuickTime movie.
  247.  
  248. Netscape  Navigator  will  use  the  QuickTime plug-in
  249. automatically  to  play   any  QuickTime  movie  while
  250. browsing the internet. The plug-in can play many kinds
  251. of QuickTime movies (.mov files) including movies with
  252. text,  MIDI,  and  other  kinds  of  data. If you have
  253. downloaded and  installed the QuickTime  VR component,
  254. it  will  also  let  you  interact  with  QuickTime VR
  255. Panoramas and Objects.

  269. such as pkunzip to extract the software.

  274. Netscape  Navigator   3.0  (http://home.netscape.com).
  275. Please make sure you  have downloaded the plug-in that
  276. is most appropriate for the computer you are using.

  280. If  you  would  like  to  view  QuickTime  VR (Virtual
  281. Reality)  Panoramas  and  Objects  using the QuickTime
  282. plug-in, you  will need the  QTVR library for  Windows
  283. (QTVRW.QTC). The QTVR software  is *not* included with
  284. Netscape Navigator 3.0, but you can download them from
  285. either     the     Apple     QuickTime     VR     site
  286. (http://qtvr.quicktime.apple.com)  or   the  QuickTime
  287. Software page (http://quicktime.apple.com).

  289. On Windows, the QTVRW.QTC file  must be in the WINDOWS
  290. directory of your primary drive.

  302. HOW TO USE THE PLUG-IN:

  304. Netscape Navigator 3.0 includes the QuickTime plug-in.
  305. When you run Navigator 3.0,  the plug-in will be ready
  306. to use.

  308. If you  are downloading the  QuickTime plug-in or  the
  309. QuickTime VR  components for the  plug-in from Apple's
  310. web site,  you must quit  Netscape Navigator and  move
  311. the software to the  appropriate location (see above).
  312. When  you  relaunch  Navigator,  the  plug-in  will be
  313. loaded and ready to use.

  333. FREQUENT QUESTIONS:

  335. Q: Should Windows users  download the 16-bit or 32-bit
  336. version of the QuickTime plug-in, or both?

  338. A: First  of all, if you  are using Netscape Navigator
  339. 3.0, you  do not need  to download the  plug-in, it is
  340. bundled   with   Navigator   3.0.   But  beyond  that,
  341. definitely  *not* both.  Download the  version of  the
  342. plug-in that matches the  version of Navigator you are
  343. running.  If you  are not  sure which  version you are
  344. running,  look  inside  the  PLUGINS  folder  in  your
  345. NETSCAPE  folder.  If  you  see  Npnull16.dll, you are
  346. using 16-bit  Navigator. If you  see Npnull32.dll, you
  347. are using 32-bit Navigator.
  348.  
  349. Q: I am running Windows  '95 (or NT). I downloaded the
  350. QuickTime VR software (QTVRW.QTC),  installed it in my
  351. WINDOWS  directory,  and  rebooted.  But  When  I  run
  352. Navigator  with the  QuickTime VR  component, I  can't
  353. view QuickTime VR Panoramas and Objects.
  354.  
  355. A:  Currently there  is only  a 16-bit  version of the
  356. QuickTime VR software for  Windows. The 16-bit version
  357. will not  work with a 32-bit  (Windows '95/NT) version
  358. of Netscape  Navigator. If you  would like to  use the
  359. QuickTime VR software with Navigator, you will have to
  360. download and  use the Windows 3.1  version of Netscape
  361. Navigator. When  a 32-bit version of  the QuickTime VR
  362. component  is available  for Windows  '95/NT users, we
  363. will   post    it   on   the    QuickTime   web   site
  364. (http://quicktime.apple.com).

  366. Q:  I  downloaded  Netscape  Navigator  3.0,  but  the
  367. QuickTime plug-in doesn't seem to be working.
  368.  
  369. A: Navigator 3.0 lets  you pick plug-ins for different
  370. types of content, just like  you pick helper apps. You
  371. may  need  to  pick   the  QuickTime  plug-in  in  the
  372. Navigator   "Options/Helpers"  dialog   to  make   the
  373. QuickTime plug-in work.

  375. Q:  I  am  using  a  Web  browser  other than Netscape
  376. Navigator 3.0 and I  am experiencing problems with the
  377. QuickTime plug-in.

  379. A:  Currently,  the  QuickTime  plug-in  only supports
  380. Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later.

  382. Q.  I design  web pages  and would  like to  know more
  383. about  movie controls  and other  capabilities of  the
  384. QuickTime   plug-in.   Where   should   I   look   for

  387. A: The QuickTime plug-in provides  a number of new and
  388. exciting  options  for   internet  content  providers.

  392. Q: I am  browsing a page with a  QuickTime VR panorama
  393. and  expect  that  I  can  use  the option and control
  394. (shift and control on Windows)  to zoom in/zoom out of
  395. the movie. Likewise, with a regular QuickTime movie, I
  396. expect  the arrow  keys to  step through  the movie  a
  397. frame at a time. But  the movies don't seem to respond
  398. to keystrokes.

  400. A:  You need  to select  the QuickTime  VR panaroma or
  401. QuickTime movie  first by clicking on  it. On Windows,
  402. the arrow keys do not work.
  403.  
  404. Q.  I'd like  to save  some of  the movies  to my hard
  405. drive. How do I do this?
  406.  
  407. A. You can  click on the movie and  press Command-S on
  408. the  Macintosh or  Control-S on  the PC  to bring up a
  409. "save"  dialogue.  However,  this  will  not  work for
  410. QuickTime VR movies. To save QuickTime VR movies go to
  411. the   Navigator  3.0   menu,  select   Options/General
  412. Preferences/Helpers,  then select  QuickTime from  the
  413. list  and  choose  Edit.  At  this  point,  you'll  be
  414. presented with a few options, all will work for saving
  415. QuickTime VR files.
