- Introduction:
- -----------------
- WEBS is a deceptively simple solitaire game requiring both strategy and
- cunning. You claim nodes on a web while trying to limit the moves available
- to your opponent. Automatic display of potential moves, a variety of webs
- and difficulties give hours of challenge.
-
- The Main Menu lets you play a game You can also get more information about
- the game and how to register it.
-
- To start, pick "Play" from the main menu, then choose one of the puzzles
- from the pushbutton menu that appears. There are 3 difficulty levels.
-
- You are RED, the computer plays BLUE.
-
- You go first and can claim any WHITE node.
-
- BLUE and RED can never be adjacent, so some nodes will only be available to
- one side. These are indicated by a partially filled node. Play alternates
- until only one side can play.
-
- If no significant moves remain, the game detects this, and assigns the
- remaining potential nodes to each side. You can also quit in the middle of
- the game, and get a score, but this is not necessarily an accurate
- prediction of the final score.
-
- Strategy?
- ---------
- Since RED and BLUE cannot be adjacent, placing one node automatically limits
- the colors which can be placed in adjacent nodes. If only RED is
- adjacent, then that node is potentially a RED node. If both colors are
- adjacent, then no one can claim it, and it will be filled with CYAN. A
- first strategy should thus be to change as many pure WHITE nodes to be
- potential RED nodes. At the same time, you can limit BLUE's potential by
- claiming nodes adjacent to its potential nodes. Sound confusing? It's much
- simpler to just play a few games at different difficulties, and watch the
- strategies unfold.
-
- Each web may require a different approach -- some are symmetric and easy to
- analyze. Others may take more study.
-
- The shareware version of WEBS has several sets of puzzles, ranging in
- difficulty from easy to very hard. Registered users will receive the latest
- version of the game, and some additional puzzles, not available as
- shareware. To register, print out the file REGISTER.FRM and mail it with a
- check for $20 to Cascoly Software.
-
- Other Notes:
- ------------
- You can move the message box on the screen by clicking on the message area,
- then dragging the box. This lets you view areas of the web that may get
- covered by messages.
-
- Making New Webs and Sets
- ========================
- You can modify any of the the webs, and create new ones. If you are going
- to use this feature, you should be sure to create a backup of your files in
- case you want to return to the originals.
-
- Creating new webs:
- ------------------
- If you just want to modify an existing web, you can skip this section. Web patterns
- are stored in series of sets. To add a new web, you'll need to modify the
- set information file. The following is the data portion of MAPS.SET.
-
- 3 3
- USA1 USA2 ...
- Rome ... ...
- ... ... ...
- 1 1 0
- 1 0 0
- 0 0 0
-
- This file contains the information used to create the pushbutton web
- selector menu. The first line indicates there are 3 rows and 3 columns.
- The first row of the pushbuttons will contain USA1 and USA2; the second,
- ROME. The numbered matrix following the names shows whether a web is
- selectable or not. A 1 indicates it can be selected. Thus, only the named
- webs can be selected. To add a new web, use any ascii editor to replace the
- dots with the name (no blanks), and change the corresponding 0 to a 1.
-
- 3 3
- USA1 USA2 ...
- Rome ... ...
- ... ... ...
- 1 1 0
- 1 0 0
- 0 0 0
-
- For example, to add a new web called Seattle, the changes to be:
- 3 3
- USA1 USA2 ...
- Rome ... ...
- ... Seattle ...
- 1 1 0
- 1 0 0
- 0 1 0
-
- This prepares a space for the web. To create it, choose the modify feature,
- and then choose that web. Note, that you can make new webs based on
- existing ones in this fashion: First use the dos copy command:
-
- COPY WEB1.ASC WEB87.ASC
-
- Then follow the above procedure to add WEB87 to one of the sets.
-
- Modifying Webs
- --------------
- You must explicitly confirm a save of a changed file, so you can feel free
- to experiment with the webmaker routines. Press the Help box for more notes
- while modifying a web.
-
- You can add nodes, move them, and set edges. You can delete nodes, too
- (right click while in add mode.) The Snap feature redraws the pattern with
- all nodes realigned to the nearest 5, 10, etc pixels. This often results in
- crisper patterns and straighter lines. The grid feature is also available
- to assist in plotting a new pattern (the grid marks will never show on the
- final pattern).
-
-
- Contest & Cash prizes
- =====================
- Registered users of WEB are eligible to compete in an ongoing WEBS design
- contest. Simply create new webs and send them to me. I am assembling
- additional packages for shareware distribution (about 10 to 15 webs are
- neede for each package). If your WEB is selected, you will receive $10. No
- limit to the number of webs you can submit, or the number of puzzles that
- might be used.
-
- You can enter the contest when you register, or as many times afterwards as
- you wish. Entries must be submitted on a disk. You can submit either
- single webs (files named *.asc), or sets. All entries become the property
- of Cascoly Software. Entries cannot be returned or acknowledged unless
- accompanied by a stamped, self addressed mailer. Winners will be notified
- and paid when each web dataset is released. Winners also receive a free
- disk with the latest puzzles on it. (To obtain a quarterly list of winners,
- send a stamped self addressed envelope)
-
- ------------------------
- Shareware & the ASP
- ------------------------
-
- This program is shareware, which is a means of distributing software. Under
- the shareware concept, software may be freely copied and passed along to
- others, or distributed through bulletin board systems or national networks.
-
- As a recipient of a shareware program, you may use the software for a short
- trial period to determine if it meets your needs. If the software is not
- suitable, then you can discard it. If you decide to use it, you should
- register it. WEBS costs $20 to register. When you register, you will
- receive a disk with the latest version of the program, additional
- challenging webs, plus other Cascoly programs. Only registered users are
- eligible to participate in the webs design contest. Registration also
- entitles you to online support via CompuServe. Send email to Cascoly
- Software, CompuServe number 76703,3046. (We will also answer mail from
- registered users.)
-
- As an additional benefit, registration entitles you to a free introductory
- account on CompuServe. (Details will be sent when you register.)
-
- Cascoly Software is a member of the Association of Shareware Professionals
- (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle works for you.
- If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related problem with an ASP member
- by contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP
- Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but
- does not provide technical support for members' products. You can contact
- the ASP Ombudsman at P.O. Box 5786, Bellevue, WA 98006 or send a Compuserve
- message via easyplex to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536
