  5. Welcome to the Painter 5.0 Demo!  
  6. Painter is the world's most creative design tool. 
  7. Painter's astounding Natural-Media features simulate 
  8. the tools and textures of traditional artists' 
  9. materials. Version 5.0 adds amazing plug-in brushes 
  10. to extend your creativity, dynamic plug-in floaters 
  11. to create one-of-a-kind looks and powerful Internet 
  12. publishing tools to put you on the web.

  14. ABOUT THE DEMO
  15. This demo version contains all the great Natural-
  16. Media features of the full product. However, when 
  17. using the demo version you will not be able to save 
  18. or print your artwork. Also, some features that 
  19. require advanced system services are also disabled --
  20. for example, Net Painter for collaborative painting 
  21. across a network, the Kodak color management system 
  22. and frame-by-frame animation.

  24. Two versions of the Painter 5.0 Demo are available:
  25. * The CD-ROM demo contains a full complement of art 
  26. materials (paper textures, patterns, Image Hose 
  27. Nozzles, etc.) and requires 40Mb of free disk space 
  28. for installation.

  30. * The online demo is designed for download from the 
  31. Web. It holds a small collection of art materials to 
  32. make the installer much more compact and only 
  33. requires 20Mb of free disk space for installation.

  44. Painter is a big program. To assist you with its many 
  45. features, we have created an electronic version 
  46. (Acrobat PDF) of the step-by-step Tutorial Guide. We 
  47. strongly suggest you print this guide and work 
  48. through the step by step lessons. They will provide a 
  49. good overview of the program.
  50.  
  51. The Tutorial folder is automatically installed if you 
  52. are installing your Painter 5 demo from CD-ROM. If 
  53. you download your demo version from the web, you will 
  54. need to download the additional Tutorial file. It is 
  55. available at http://www.metacreations.com/downloads/.

  57. Please note that when working through the Tutorial, 
  58. you will not be able to Save your artwork. 
  59.

  61. help, select Painter Help from the Help menu.

  79. PAINTER'S BRUSHES
  80. It is the incredible Natural-Media brush engine that 
  81. separates Painter from all other graphics programs. 
  82. If you spend a little time investigating how the 
  83. brush engine works, Painter will open up as the most 
  84. incredible art program you have ever used. This is 
  85. even truer with the new expandable plug-in brush 
  86. capabilities of version 5.0.
  87.  
  88. The first step is to explore all the great brush 
  89. libraries included with Painter. By default, the 
  90. Brushes Palette opens the library "Painter Brushes." 
  91. This includes the basic set of Natural Media painting 
  92. tools, like chalks, airbrushes, pencils and pens. 
  93. This default library is only the beginning. We have 
  94. created a bunch of new brushes for version 5.0. These 
  95. new brush libraries are installed in the folder New 
  96. Brushes which is in your Painter folder. To make it 
  97. easy to access the new brushes a Custom Palette 
  98. called "Shortcut to New Brushes" allows you to 
  99. quickly load the 7 additional brush libraries. If the 
  100. Custom Palette is not on-screen, select Window/Custom 
  101. Palette/Shortcut to New Brushes to activate it. 
  102. Simply click an icon in the Custom Palette to load 
  103. the new library.
  104.  
  105. DYNAMIC PLUG-IN FLOATERS
  106. New in version 5.0 are Dynamic Plug-in Floaters which 
  107. perform all kinds of exciting image effects. You will 
  108. find the Dynamic Plug-in Floaters by clicking the 
  109. P.Float icon on the Objects Palette. Some plug-in 
  110. floaters create new layers -- like the Kaleidoscope 
  111. and Liquid Metal. Some should be applied to a 
  112. selection or existing floating object -- like Bevel 
  113. World and Burn. If the Apply button (or menu command) 
  114. is grayed out, it means you need to create a 
  115. selection or select a floater before applying the 
  116. plug-in floater.
  117.  
  118. Dynamic plug-in floaters can be CPU and memory 
  119. intensive. Be careful when applying Dynamic Plug-in 
  120. Floaters to large images/floaters.
  121.  
  122. TRANSPARENT LAYERS
  123. New to Painter 5 is the ability to paint on a 
  124. transparent layer. Use the Objects Palette menu 
  125. command Floater/Transparent Layer to create a 
  126. transparent layer.
  127.  
  128. Use the new brush library "Layer" to paint into 
  129. transparent layers. You can also make any brush paint 
  130. into a transparent layer:
  131.   1. From the brushes palette, select the brush you 
  132. want to paint with.
  133.   2. Click the Expand box at the top-right corner of 
  134. the Brushes Palette.
  135.   3. From the Method Popup select "Plug-in"
  136.   4. From the Subcategory Popup select "Transparent 
  137. Layer Brush"
  138.  
  139. TEAR-OFF TOOLS
  140. Don't overlook the new Tear-off Tools. Grab any brush 
  141. (like the Pencil) and drag it off the palette. 
  142. Presto. You've created a custom palette. You can drag 
  143. Brushes, Papers, Gradations, Patterns, Weaves, Plug-
  144. in Floaters, Scripts and Menu items to custom 
  145. palettes. To add a menu command to a custom palette, 
  146. select Window/Custom Palette/Add Command.

  148. Quick Tip:
  149. Hold the keys Control+Shift to rearrange items on a 
  150. custom palette. Hold Control+Option+Shift to delete 
  151. an item from a custom palette.
  152.  
  153. Quick Tip: 
  154. Hold down Control+Shift before selecting a menu item 
  155. to add a menu item to a Custom Palette.
  156.  
  157. MAGIC WAND
  158. When using the Magic Wand, holding the Shift key and 
  159. clicking does not add to the selection. Instead it 
  160. adds to the color set that Painter uses to build the 
  161. Magic Wand selection. To add a range of colors, click 
  162. and drag across the range of colors.
  163.  
  164. To select all areas of the image that fall within the 
  165. tolerance setting of the Magic Wand, use 
  166. Control+Shift+click. You can define a bounding 
  167. rectangle by holding Control+Shift+drag and the Magic 
  168. Wand will select all colors within the bounding 
  169. rectangle.
  170.  
  171. KODAK COLOR MANAGEMENT
  172. The Output Preview feature has been disabled in the 
  173. demo version of Painter 5.
  174.  
  175. ANIMATION
  176. Animation capabilities have been disabled in the demo 
  177. version of Painter 5.
  178.  
  179. ----------------------------
  180. COMMON PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS
  181. ----------------------------
  182. * The Painter 5 demo does not overwrite an existing 
  183. installation of Painter. The Installer will place the 
  184. demo in c:\Program Files\Painter 5.0 Demo\ by 
  185. default.
  186.  
  187. * QuickTimeLibError: Cannot find Quicktime Lib. Your 
  188. Macintosh will generate this error message if there 
  189. is not enough free system memory to initialize 
  190. QuickTime. It happens when applications are using 
  191. almost all available memory. The solution is to lower 
  192. Painter╒s preferred memory, or quit other 
  193. applications. Refer to the User Guide for information 
  194. on setting the amount of memory allocated to Painter.
  195.  
  196. * Painter 5 only supports the Photoshop 3.0 plug-in 
  197. API (not 4.0). Plug-ins, like Alien Skin Eye Candy, 
  198. which require the Photoshop 4.0 filter API will not 
  199. work with Painter.
  200.  
  201. * Many Adobe Photoshop 4.0 plug-ins are designed to 
  202. work only with Photoshop. They will appear in the 
  203. Painter menus, but will not run.
  204.  
  205. * When using plug-in filters with Painter, especially 
  206. Kai's Power Tools and Convolver, increase the amount 
  207. of memory allocated to Painter. When using KPT 3.0 
  208. Painter should be set for a minimum memory size of 
  209. 24Mb. Refer to the User Guide for information on 
  210. increasing the amount of memory allocated to Painter.
  211.  
  212. * In a dual monitor setup, Painter 5.0 and KPT 
  213. Texture Explorer are not compatible.
  214.  
  215. * Plug-in Floaters can not be recorded in a script or 
  216. used during a Net Painter session.
  217.  
  218. * Brush libraries are limited to 15Mb in size. You 
  219. should not use the brush mover to merge any of the 
  220. default libraries that come with Painter or are on 
  221. the Painter CD.
  222.  
  223. * If your Custom Palettes are moved completely off-
  224. screen (usually by switching resolution), get them 
  225. back by using the Custom Palette Organizer 
  226. (Window/Custom Palette/Organizer) to Export, Delete 
  227. then Import the Palette.
