WINDOWS 3.0 Display Driver Installation Version 2.02
Release Notes
May 22, 1991
This document contains information related to Version 2.02 of the Windows
Display Driver Installation. The information contained in this document is
more up to date than the printed manuals. As a result, where information in
the manuals conflicts with information in this document, this document
should be assumed to contain the correct information.
------------------------------------
NEW FEATURES
A PC version of the Windows 3.0 Display Driver is available
on 5.25", 1.2MB and 3.5", 720KB disks for PC (AT-bus) display subsystems.
New features include:
1. Two new presentation size options that provide "LARGE" (192 "logical DPI")
and "EXTRA LARGE" (240 "logical DPI") fonts for the Windows menu display
(title bar, menu bar, program manager etc.). These two new presentation
size options, along with the two introduced in earlier versions, bring
the total number of choices to four. New larger fonts for DOS-emulation
windows are also included with the LARGE and EXTRA LARGE presentation
size options. For more information, please refer to the "Logical DPI"
table in Section 2, Installing the Windows Display Driver, of this READ.ME.
2. The PC version provides support for the DP150 (PC2048A) and DP120
(PC16xA) display subsystems. However, this release does not include
support for the DP150N (PC20xA).
NOTE: Since the larger fonts require a higher dots per square inch
specification in the driver, commercial Windows software will not run
properly in some cases. The following list contains the known anomalies
for the new, larger font Display Driver:
- Ventura DTP for Windows has irregular character display.
WORKAROUND: Use commercially available fonts from
Bitstream, Adobe or Z-Soft.
- Powerpoint's installation program will produce a UAE
(Unrecoverable Application Error) using the default mode.
WORKAROUND: Install Powerpoint using Option mode.
Powerpoint will now work normally under the
Windows 3.0 Display Driver.
------------------------------------
KNOWN PROBLEMS IN THIS RELEASE OF WINDOWS 3.0 DISPLAY DRIVER
This release of the Windows 3.0 Display Driver has the following
known defects:
1. When using the 386MAX 5.0 application as the memory manager,
Windows works correctly until you exit the program and then attempt to
restart in the same session. At this point, Windows will not come up.
2. When using the Word 5.0 application in Windows 3.0, the system hangs
up or displays the error message, "this system has violated the system
integrity..." when the DOS Word 5.0 preview is run.
3. There is a space between the pop-up menu and the menu title itself
under GROUP.
4. This release does not support DOS-emulation for the Microchannel
Video Controllers (PS1600A-1-19 or PS0768A-g-15).
5. This release does not now, nor will it in the future, support very early
revisions of the DualPage (PC1600A-g-19), where g =gray levels.
Hardware upgrades are available through Technical Support.
NOTE: For information on the availability of updated Windows 3.0 display
drivers, check the Cornerstone BBS (408-425-8943) for new releases or
call Cornerstone Technical Support (408-435-8900).
----------------------------------
PROBLEM RESOLUTIONS
Solutions have been provided in Release 2.02 for the following "bugs":
1. In one plane mode, the Coral Draw application toolbox divider is not
visible. Using grayscale in the two and four plane modes, a trail is
left on the screen when the coordinate line is moved.
2. The system displays an "Unrecoverable Application Error" message while
running the Paint program if you choose "Monochrome or Color Image"
under the Options selection "Image Attributes." When this happens, the
mouse will only be able to move about one inch from any side of the
screen. This bug only occurs while using the grayscale modes.
3. If you click the mouse on the Paint application and then choose Scissors,
the system will display a "UAE" message. This problem only occurs in
two and four plane mode.
4. When using the Toolbox Calculator in Windows 3.0, colors will appear
incorrectly and the system may even hang up if the Print and Cancel
selections are clicked on repeatedly.
5. In Solitaire, the cards leave trails when run in grayscale under Windows 3.0.
6. The Powerpoint slide sorter now works in both one and four plane modes
under Windows 3.0.
7. The zoom-in color inverse has been fixed.
8. Optimal color matching from RGB values to the gray-scale levels are not
used in 2 and 4 plane controllers. This problem is seen in two ways.
First, programs explicitly specifying a gray RGB value may display an
incorrect shade of gray. Second, programs that display one color on
another (i.e. a program that displays red text on a green background)
may display the same shade of gray for both colors.
----------------------------------
SCREEN FONTS IN WINDOWS
Windows 3.0 ships standard with Times Roman, Helvetica and Courier
screen fonts in sizes 8,10,12,14,18 and 24. In addition, there are now
four sizes of system fonts available for the Windows menu display
(title bar, menu bar, program manager, etc.). If the user calls for
screen fonts other than these sizes, applications will handle the
request in one of the follows ways:
1. Generate the requested size from one of the standard sizes.
This will produce jagged fonts.
2. Select the font closest to the requested size. This may
cause it to appear that no change has been made.
3. Select a font of another type face.
Because the screen font is managed by the application, it is difficult
to predict how an unavailable screen font will be approximated.
If screen fonts do not appear as requested, use the standard sizes
or purchase any of the commercially available screen fonts such as
Adobe Type Manager, Bitstream Facelift or Z-Soft SoftType to
provide additional fonts.
----------------------------------
APPLICATION BUGS WHICH IMPACT CORNERSTONE DISPLAYS
When running the Ventura application, the system will display an
"Unrecoverable Application Error" message when the 'Special Effects'
menu is used.
This problem may occur on all displays which exceed VGA resolution
and are logged with Ventura as AR772 and AR791. Ventura should be
contacted for patched software or a new release date.
Note: The 'Divide by Zero' error that occured in earlier releases when
an HP Laserjet printer was specified has been fixed.
The "Help" menus in the Designer program do not display the underline
correctly when using the medium or extra-large Display Drivers (the
underline runs straight through the text).
WORKAROUND: Use only the small (96 DPI) or large (192 DPI) Display
Drivers.
The Gupta-System displays an "Unrecoverable Application Error" message
when asked to run Windows with CTI medium, large or extra-large Display
Drivers.
WORKAROUND: Use only the small (96 DPI) Display Driver.
----------------------------------
IF YOU ARE UPDATING A SYSTEM THAT USES WINDOWS DISPLAY
DRIVERS PRIOR TO VERSION 2.00, YOU WILL NEED TO MANUALLY UPDATE
YOUR CONFIG.SYS FILE.
The Configuration Manager is now named "VIDCONF". The VIDNSTAL program
creates a line in CONFIG.SYS as follows:
DEVICE = \dir\VIDCONF.DEV
where 'dir' is the directory you specify during installation. If you
already have a line in CONFIG.SYS as follows:
DEVICE = \dir\xxCONFIG.DEV
where 'xxCONFIG' is either DPCONFIG, XLCONFIG, PC12CONF, SPCONFIG,
PS16CONF or PC10CONF, you must manually delete this DEVICE declaration.
------------------------------------
INSTALLING THE WINDOWS 3.0 DISPLAY DRIVER
Installing Windows
You should refer to your Microsoft Windows installation documentation for
complete Windows installation details and follow the four steps below which
must be completed to correctly install your Windows Display Driver:
1. Install the Configuration Manager.
-Two files are supplied with the Downloaded files
VIDCONF.EXE
VIDCONF.DEV
-To install the Configuration Manager you must use a TEXT editor to
change the CONFIG.SYS. The CONFIG.SYS should read:
DEVICE = [D:\subdir\]VIDCONF.DEV
D=drive letter where VIDCONF.EXE and VIDCONF.DEV are installed.
-You must reboot the computer before the Configuration manager is
completly installed.
2. Run SETUP from the Microsoft Windows Directory
Issue the following commands to run Microsoft SETUP:
CD \WINDOWS (or your Windows directory)
SETUP
The first screen displayed allows the modification of System Information.
To correctly set up your display, you must do the following:
A. Select DISPLAY. Scroll down and choose 'Other'.
B. Enter the path name to the drive and directory you have copied the
Windows 3.0 display driver.
C. Select one of the following choices:
Windows Display Driver - Small
D. Specify again the floppy drive which contains the Windows
Display Driver disk.
E. Complete Windows SETUP.
3. Reboot your PC
Rebooting your system installs the Configuration Manager into memory.
The Configuration Manager is REQUIRED for your high resolution Display
Driver(s) to execute properly.
4. Run Windows
Startup Windows. The desktop will fill the screen and Windows will be
functional for installing and/or running Windows applications.
NOTE: If you have any difficulties with this installation of the
Windows Display Driver, run Windows SETUP and choose the
Hercules Display Driver to ensure that you have correctly
completed the installation. If you have the same or similar
problems installing Windows for Hercules, contact Microsoft
for installation support.
If you continue to have difficulties, before running Windows SETUP,
check for the files listed below in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory
and delete them. Once completing Windows SETUP some of these files
will appear in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. The reason for this step
is once the Windows 3.0 display drivers are installed for one DPI then
installed for another, there may be some conflicts. If you have a version
2.0 or later version of VIDNSTAL you can install the WINDOWS DISPLAY DRIVER
and the program will do this for you.
