  12. SWEEP versions have been updated with new virus information.  A list of new
  13. viruses detected by Version 3.28 can be found in "What's New", or in the
  14. READNEWS.TXT file on the SWEEP for DOS Version 3.28 Installation Disk.

  20. Known problems
  21. --------------

  23. 1. Accumulation of .req files
  24.  
  25. InterCheck 4.x leaves multiple files with the .req extension in the root of
  26. the primary drive.
  27.  
  28. In cases where Sophos Anti-Virus has been installed from a central
  29. installation directory and the COMMS directory was not specified for
  30. messaging, multiple req files can accumulate in the root of the primary drive.
  31. If you experience this problem, follow these instructions:
  32.  
  33.   1 Go to the Sophos Anti-Virus central installation directory and locate the
  34.     INTERCHK.CFG file.
  35.  
  36.   2 Remove the line "CommsDirectory=" from the INTERCHK.CFG file.
  37.  
  38.   3 Initiate a workstation update by running setup /update from the Sophos
  39.     Anti-Virus central installation directory. 
  40.  
  41. If you are installing Sophos Anti-Virus centrally for the first time and do
  42. not specify a COMMS directory, ensure that you remove the line
  43. "CommsDirectory=" from the INTERCHK.CFG file before creating a local
  44. installation of Sophos Anti-Virus.

  47. Modifications from Version 3.27
  48. -------------------------------

  50. 1. Version information
  51.  
  52. All SWEEP versions have been updated with new virus information. A list of new
  53. viruses detected by Version 3.28 can be found in "What's New" or in the
  54. READNEWS.TXT file on the Release CD, or in the READNEWS.TXT file on the SWEEP
  55. for DOS Version 3.28 Installation Disk.

  57. 2. Microsoft Project
  58.  
  59. Microsoft Project files are now swept for viruses. The extensions "MPP" and
  60. "MPT" have been added to the list of files that Sophos Anti-Virus scans by
  61. default. To
  62. disable this feature, please refer to the "Troubleshooting" section below.

  65. 3. Sophos Anti-Virus no longer honours the action flag when disinfection is
  66. succesful.
  67.  
  68. In version 3.27 Sophos Anti-Virus would honour the user request and undertake
  69. the action
  70. specified on an infected document even if it had managed to disinfect it. This
  71. behaviour has been modified so that Sophos Anti-Virus will now only undertake
  72. the action if
  73. the object could not be disinfected or if disinfection failed.

  77. Additional information

  80. 1. Detection of viruses within archives
  81.  
  82. This version of Sophos Anti-Virus contains a re-engineered virus detection
  83. engine which includes many enhancements over the previous engine, including
  84. the ability to scan inside archive files. It can be configured via the "Scan
  85. inside archive files" option on the "Action" configuration page.

  87. Selecting this option enables scanning within the following archive types:
  88.  
  89.   Name:                 ARJ
  90.   Description:          a reasonably widespread archiving and compression     
  91.                         format.
  92.   File extension:       .arj
  93.   Used most often for:  storing collections of files together in one
  94.                         convenient compressed file. Most commonly used
  95.                         on Windows systems.
  96.  
  97.   Name:                 CMZ
  98.   Description:          a Unix compressor which is very similar to LZW
  99.   File extension:       .Z
  100.   Used most often for:    compressing single files.
  101.     
  102.   Name:                 TAR
  103.   Description:          a Unix archiver program which stores files in a 
  104.                         single archive without compression
  105.   File extension:       .tar
  106.   Used most often for:    collecting source files together for software
  107.                         package distribution. Often used in combination
  108.                         with a compression program, e.g. GZIP
  109.    
  110.   Name:                 RAR
  111.   Description:          a general purpose archiving and compression
  112.                         program which allows higher compression ratios
  113.                         than other PC archiving tools
  114.   File extension:       .rar
  115.   Used most often for:  compressing large numbers of small files
  116.  
  117.   Name:                 GZIP
  118.   Description:          a compression utility to replace Unix Compress
  119.                         because of its better compression and freedom from
  120.                         patented algorithms
  121.   File extension:       .gz
  122.   Used most often for:  compressing web downloads, especially when applied 
  123.                          to TAR files

  125.   Name:                 ZIP
  126.   Description:          an extremely widespread archiving and compression
  127.                         format
  128.   File extension:       .zip
  129.   Used most often for:  Storing collections of files together conveniently 
  130.                         in one compressed file. Most commonly used on
  131.                         Windows systems

  133. 2. Optimised file updating
  134.  
  135. In this version of Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 95/98, product updates now
  136. involve copying only those files which have changed, rather than all files in
  137. the product distribution. This means that if you add an IDE (virus identity)
  138. file from the Sophos website, for example, only the new IDE file will be
  139. copied from your Central Installation Directory (CID) down to your
  140. workstations. This will optimise the updating process, especially for dial-up
  141. or WAN users.

  143. You no longer force automatic updates by editing configuration files in the
  144. server's CID. Instead, from the Sophos Anti-Virus installation directory,
  145. issue the command
  146.                  SETUP /UPDATE /SRCPATH="\\SERVERNAME\CID"
  147. to signal that an update should be triggered from the specified CID on
  148. the server SERVERNAME.

  151. 3. New "About" dialog
  152.  
  153. SAV for Windows 95/98 GUI now displays more detailed version information.

  156. 4. New on-line Help
  157.  
  158. The on-line Help files have been upgraded and restructured.

  161. 5. Improved temporary file-handling
  162.  
  163. During some forms of scanning Sophos Anti-Virus needs to make use of temporary
  164. file storage. By default these files are stored in the TEMP subdirectory of
  165. the Sophos Anti-Virus application.

  167. You may create the following registry key and associated value to over-ride
  168. the default behaviour:

  170.     Key:        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SOPHOS\ADVANCED\

  173.     Data:       Path to the user specified temporary directory

  181. it now includes a short cut to the Sophos home page.

  184. Troubleshooting
  185. ---------------

  187. The following problems may require the use of the Registry Editor
  188. (Regedt32.exe). Microsoft have issued the following warning with respect to
  189. the Registry Editor:
  190.  
  191.   "Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide
  192.   problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct
  193.   them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from
  194.   the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your
  195.   own risk."

  198. 1. Disabling scanning of Microsoft project files
  199.  
  200. Should you wish to disable the scanning of Microsoft project files you may
  201. create the following registry key and associated value to over-ride the
  202. default behaviour:

  214. Compatibility issues

  217. 1. Bay Networks (Performance Technologies) Instant Internet
  218.  
  219. A conflict between the version of the WinSock client installed by the Instant
  220. Internet application and the Sophos SMTP.SMM module can lead to the Sophos
  221. Anti-Virus service not starting or stopping correctly.

  223. As a work-around add the following value to the registry.

  228.     Value Name: No Startup Check

  232.                 appropriate network transport protocols during startup.
