CatDV Release Notes
===================

Release Notes for CatDV v3.0.7

Thank you for downloading CatDV. This application will function in a save and
print disabled evaluation mode for 30 days unless you purchase and enter a valid
registration code. You can purchase CatDV online at http://www.catdv.com.
Please note that existing users of old versions may need to purchase an upgrade.

IMPORTANT: You may install and use this software only in accordance with the
terms of the enclosed software license agreement.

CatDV 3 Editions
----------------
CatDV 3 may be provided in one of two editions: Personal Edition and Professional
Edition (with additional features, such as named filters, unlimited user defined
columns, more file formats supported, etc.). The Professional Edition can also
be used as a client to the optional CatDV Workgroup Server that stores a
central database of clips that can be shared between multiple users), and can
support importing OMFI media files via a separately chargeable optional feature.

There are separate downloads for the Personal Edition and Professional Edition,
though as they share much of the same code base the version numbers and release
notes for both editions are normally kept in step with each other.

What is CatDV?
--------------
CatDV is a cross platform clip logging and cataloging application designed to
enhance the productivity of video editors using their existing NLE application.

The detailed CatDV Pro 3.0 User Manual (a PDF document) is not included in this
installer but is available at http://www.squarebox.co.uk/catdv/download.html
as a separate download. You should DEFINITELY read the PDF user manual if you
are new to CatDV - it has a lot of useful material. The somewhat shorter
CatDV Reference Guide is included in the normal download (in HTML format)
and is also accessible via the on-line help.

If you obtained CatDV from CD-ROM, please check the web site http://www.catdv.com
to make sure you have latest version (you can also use the web shortcuts in the
CatDV Help menu). CatDV is updated regularly, with both bug fixes and feature
enhancements, and you should normally ensure you are using the latest available
version.

Windows Installation
--------------------
Requirements

    Windows 98SE, ME, NT4, 2000, XP
    QuickTime 5.0 or later (QuickTime 6.1 or later is recommended)
    QuickTime for Java
    Java (JRE 1.3.1 or later)
    Abstract Plane VDIG (to use Live Capture)
    A minimum of 128MB RAM and a 1024x768 display is recommended.

Java is available from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/download.html. Use the
Windows JRE link. CatDV is also compatible with Java 1.4.1, though this has not
been tested as extensively as with 1.3.1. To use Java 1.4.1 you need QuickTime 6.
If you need to install multiple versions of Java for any reason you can force
CatDV to use a specific JVM by copying or renaming the "CatDV.exe" launcher to
something like "CatDV [JRE1.3.1].exe"

QuickTime is available for download from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/.
Once you have downloaded the QuickTime installer you should select a *custom*
installation and install *all* the QuickTime components (in particular you need
QuickTime for Java and the QuickTime Imaging components). You should run the
QuickTime installer *after* first installing Java.

Unpack the CatDV3.0??.zip ZIP archive (where ??? is the version number of the release
you are installing) using an application like WinZip or Aladdin Expander. We suggest
you create a new directory called CatDV in your Program Files folder as the destination
but you can install CatDV anywhere you choose if you prefer, such as on your desktop.

When you unzip the archive you should see the following items:

    CatDV Read Me.txt - this file
    CatDV License.txt - license agreement which you agree to comply with
    Reference Guide.html - abbreviated user manual
    CatDV Pro.exe (or CatDV.exe) - CatDV application launcher
    Sample.cdv - a sample catalog
    lib - a sub-directory containing the following files:
           catdv.jar, jakarta-regexp-1.2.jar, jaxp.jar, MRJToolkitStubs.zip,
           parser.jar, resources.jar

Launch the application by double clicking CatDV Pro.exe. Ensure you can open the
sample catalog "Sample.cdv" by using the File | Open catalog... command within CatDV.

If you want to use Live Capture you need the Windows VDIG capture component from
Abstract Plane, see http://www.abstractplane.com.au/products_vdig.jsp. This is a
third party product and you should contact Abstract Plane Pty Ltd regarding licensing
or support issues. (The VDIG is not required if you continue to use your existing
NLE software to perform capture and simply import the digitized files into CatDV.)

Mac OS X Installation
---------------------
Requirements

    Mac OS X 10.1 or later (Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar is recommended)
    [Mac OS X 10.2 or the Java 1.3.1 Update 1 is required for printing to work.]
    A minimum of 256MB RAM and a 1024x768 display is recommended.

Unlike the Classic or Windows versions you do not need to install Java or QuickTime,
as all the required components are included as standard parts of the Mac OS X system.

Download the CatDV????.dmg file then double click to mount the volume with Disk Copy.
Open the CatDV Installer volume and simply drag the CatDV folder to your hard drive.
We suggest you copy it to your Applications folder but you can install it anywhere
you choose. Inside the CatDV folder you should see the following items:

    CatDV Pro - the application
    CatDV Read Me.txt - this file
    CatDV License Agreement.txt - license agreement which you agree to comply with
    Reference Guide.html - abbreviated user manual
    Sample.cdv - a sample catalog

Drag the CatDV application to your dock if you want a convenient way to launch it.
Please note there is a bug in Mac OS X 10.1.x that means that double clicking a
CatDV document will launch the application but not open the document unless CatDV
is already running.

Macintosh Installation (Mac OS 8/9)
-----------------------------------
Note that the installation process for classic Mac OS has changed with this release.
You no longer need a separate lib folder or need to copy files to the system folder.

Requirements

    Mac OS 8.6 or later
    QuickTime 5.0 or later
    MRJ 2.2 or later (2.2.5 recommended)
    QuickTime for Java
    A minimum of 128MB RAM and a 1024x768 display is recommended.

A standard MacOS system installation will normally include all the items above,
except for "QuickTime for Java", which is available if you select a *custom*
QuickTime install from the MacOS system CDs.

Unpack the CatDV3.0??.img.bin archive file using Stuffit Expander or a similar
application (where ??? is the version number of the release you are installing)
and mount the disk image. Copy the contents of the disk image to your hard drive.
You should end up with a CatDV folder containing the following items:

    CatDV Pro 3.0?? - the application
    CatDV License Agreement - license agreement you agree to comply with
    CatDV Read Me - this file
    Reference Guide.html - abbreviated user manual
    Sample.cdv - a sample catalog

We suggest you move this folder to your Applications (Mac OS 9) folder, or wherever
you prefer to launch your applications from.

You should be able to run the CatDV application by double clicking the
application icon. Verify that you can open the sample catalog "Sample.cdv".

** 3.0.7 30 Jun 2003 **
Update exported batch lists so they are compatible with FCP 4. Detect and warn about
low memory situations during import. Fix NPE when displaying file chooser. Ensure
movie controller is shown when playing audio clips. Fix bug where setting a new poster
would lose an In2/Out2 selection. New feature in media panel where holding down shift
key while clicking on Set In2/Out2 buttons can be used to clear a selection. Fix
problem with Paste Registration Code button. Fix exported movies containing a timecode
track so they work with FCP. Fix problem with user fields when duplicating clips.
Fix problems parsing timecode when opeing catalogs. Improve media dialog display of
rotated images.

Redesigned Live Capture screen to separate out setup commands and allow entry of
Name and Notes while a tape is playing, plus a new option to create separate files
for each scene. New Preferences option to turn off audio in Live Capture (Pro only).
Fix an 'error parsing timecode' error when opening catalogs. Fix a bug reading
timecode >20 hours. Verbatim Logger now supports a free running clock (Pro only).
Fix scene analysis when importing MPEG movies. Option to hide backups when browsing
catalogs. New Pick Lists tab in Customise Views lets you clear pick list values.
Changed launcher to keep error logs in a separate Logs directory (Windows). Fix
bug where in2/out2 selections were lost in details dialog. Fix Notes field so it
uses same font as other fields (eg. to display Hebrew characters). Stop related clips
panel from collapsing in details dialog. New Show Parent Directory command (Windows).
Fix bug related to numeric sorting. Fix -2014 error during Live Capture. Fix double
action of Ctrl-Up/Down keys in details window. Changed clip details from a dialog to
a frame to fix bugs with Cmd-A/X/C/V not working as they should, with a new option
to keep the clip details on top if desired. New command to display System Information.
Added support for importing OMF files (as a separate option). Fix a problem copying
sequences from one catalog to another. Fix the tab-separated text importer. Fix
occasional errors when opening catalogs. Various other minor bug fixes.

** 3.0.6b 7 Apr 2003 **
Beta version containing some of the above changes.

** 3.0.5 4 Mar 2003 **
Significant changes to the way long running tasks are handled within a progress
dialog, fixing several problems (eg. dragging multiple files into a CatDV window
now works, message boxes where the OK button doesn't work should no longer happen).
Other fixes related to: exporting EDLs, renaming/moving media files, selecting
the same grouping attribute twice, importing OMF files, allow 2 digits for hours
when displaying timecode in details window, scene detection command giving errors,
handling of in2/out2 selections in media panel, handling of sequences, etc.
Added export to Media100 batch format (Pro version only); Verbatim Logger now
supports tab as an additional key to rewind the movie; display whether Exif images
were shot with manual exposure; added Reveal In Finder command (Mac OS X only).
CatDV Pro now shows pro features even in unregistered demo mode, though some may be
greyed out (previously it only let you see personal edition features). Live Capture
performance and stability improvements. Fix incompatibility with workgroup server.
Fix crashes when importing images. Improvements to context sensitive popup menu.
Cosmetic fixes under Window (eg. white on blue highlighting, moved Preferences item
to Tools menu, renamed Clear to Delete, lighter window background colour, web links
now work under Win2K/XP). Add "OfflineRT" preview preset (Pro only). Prevent system
going to sleep (and hence crashing) during capture. Fix import of Vegas4 EDLs. Add
Media Start and Media Duration fields. Added Preferences button to Live Capture.

** 3.0.5b 3 Feb 2003 **
Beta version testing some of the fixes above.

** 3.0.4 9 Jan 2003 **
First release with separate CatDV and CatDV Pro applications created from the
same code base. Improved visual feedback during drag and drop clip rearrangement.
After searching catalogs the matching clips are highlighted. Fixed Browse Catalogs
window layout issues. Export As Movie now works with Roxio Toast MPEG component
and when exporting AIFF audio. Fixed out by one error when exporting Premiere logs.
More generally, there's a new "Out (excl)" column to support NLEs using the
exclusive Out=In+Duration-1 timecode convention. Fixed registration problems.
Generalised the Import Cinestream Program Bin preferences option to control the
detail level with various other importers. Fixed minor Sequence Dialog problems.
The following changes are specific to CatDV Pro only: Added a time limited beta
of Avid OMF import capability; export an additional "Mediapath" field with
exporting Avid ALE files; new Create Realtime Sequence command.

Interim beta release.

** 3.0.3 6 Dec 2002 **
Improved drag and drop support, with visual feedback during drags. Support for
reading Pinnacle Purple files. Improvements to grouping (use drag and drop to enter
a new bin name or other grouping value). Changed tab-separated text import to read
additional fields. Fix erroneous "out of memory while painting" message. Allow two
digits for timecode hours. Various minor bug fixes.

** 3.0.2 27 Nov 2002 **
Better integration with Final Cut Pro, plus drag and drop and clipboard support. In
detail: drag and drop of files into and out of main window and copying of thumbnail
images to other applications is now supported (OS X & Windows only). Improvements
to FCP batch list import and export, and new documentation on FCP integration. Fixed
bug where Pro version loses additional user-defined fields. Other fixes to do with
exporting timecode tracks, copy-pasting summary clips, and renaming media files from
within clip details, Scan For New Files, and timestamps with daylight saving in force.

** 3.0.1 5 Nov 2002 **
Improvements to Live Capture, with the addition of an uncompressed audio option for
compatibility with FCP's OfflineRT codec, and buffering to minimise dropped frames.
Fields such as GMT Date which were accidently left out of the last build are now back.
Exporting as tab separated text now includes all the columns from the current view.
Various bug fixes, including exporting movies with a timecode track, relating to
sequences, and to do with reporting format of imported media files. A preview of the
new Verbatim Logger feature is included (this is still at beta and therefore subject
to change). Note also that the new User Manual is finally available now (as a separate
download from the web site)!

** 3.0.0 14 Oct 2002 **
Public release of CatDV Pro 3.0, incorporating several minor bug fixes since the
last beta (cosmetic bugs affecting Windows, occasional out by one frame errors in
automatic scene detection, left and right arrows not working in the media panel).

** 3.0b4 4 Oct 2002 **
New registration code scheme. Ensure compatibility with Java 1.4 under Windows.
Fix crash when playing movies in slide show mode. Fix problem with thumbnails when
copy and pasting clips. Ensure setting In and Out points always works immediately.
Improved reporting of MPEG files. Fix grouping bug. Fix problem with unavailable
thumbnails when first opening a window. Fix empty progress message box.

** 3.0b3 24 Sep 2002 **
Added timecode calculator. New Help menu shortcuts. Add right click popup menu to main
screen. Customisable live capture and preview settings. Use multi line text area when
displaying text columns in Full view (and other 'wide' list views). Fix occasional crash
when stopping Live Capture. Fix buttons in Movie tab (Windows). Fix bug where wrong
thumbnail was sometimes used after pressing Set Poster button. Various fixes to table
selection and mouse click handling in main window and in drop down boxes. Fix bug where
Make View (or setting a filter) would have no effect.

** 3.0b2 11 Sep 2002 **
Changed the way the details dialog works so that changes made to a clip are applied
immediately and fields are always kept up to date. Keep track of pick lists (such as
tape or bin names) across catalogs and provide drop down lists in list views and in
detail table of the details dialog. Indicate which fields are read only. Fix bug with
thumbnails smaller than preview size. Added 'Auto rename files' preferences option.
New Search and Replace tool (Pro edition). Added Log Off and Shutdown Server commands.
Show extra information in Catalog Details. Various other bug fixes.

** 3.0b1 30 Aug 2002 **
Updated online help to describe CatDV 3.0. Support two levels of grouping. Removed
option to prefetch thumbnails as it causes crashes. New options to set a custom
print title and whether to remember the current view settings. Several bug fixes to
do with queries, both local and remote. Add Clock Adjustment as a query attribute.
Fix error when publishing changes after correcting tape name. New keyboard shortcuts
in Workgroup menu. CatDV Error Log is now in ~/Library/Logs. Extract Exif data into
Exposure field. Add links to web site into Help menu. Moving file updates Bin, and
setting Bin asks if you want to move file. Added export to XML and dpsVelocity.
Fix message boxes when opening catalogs so Ok button works. Improved reporting and
handling of low memory situations.

** 3.0a6 17 Aug 2002 **
Record date field is now editable. Detect Scenes no longer gives NullPointerException
when applied to Live Capture clips. Minor fixes for compatibility with OS X 10.2.
Able to publish add new clips and thumbnail to remote datbase. Improvements to split
and merge clip commands (correct icon shown). New Name/Notes search field. Live Capture
should now work on tapes where date is not set. Find Catalogs is now supported. Clip
types and recording date are shown in remote browse window. Exporting FCP subtracts
one frame from the Out point.

** 3.0a5 9 Aug 2002 **
Implemented MySQL based server to support Workgroup menu commands.
New commands: Attach Media, Publish Directory, Clear, Merge, Page Setup, Print Selected
Images, Publish Changes. Renamed commands: Print, Print Index, Merge DV Clips.
Improved importing and format display of other media file formats.
Rearranged order of toolbar buttons slightly. Various bug fixes and minor changes
(eg. remember Live Capture mode, increase JPEG quality of Live Capture previews).
