This file contains instructions for properly installing PANTONE color support for HP Color LaserJet 5/5M PostScript printers under Microsoft Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95, and Windows NT 3.51.
General information is presented first; including instructions for printing the full PANTONE palette, enabling driver support for PANTONE colors, and the use of EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) and TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) files to use PANTONE colors in many applications. This is followed by specific information on loading the PANTONE color palette into the following applications:
MacroMedia Freehand version 3, 4, 5.x
Adobe Pagemaker version 6
QuarkXpress version 3.31
CorelDraw! versions 5, 6
MicroGrafix Designer version 6
Adobe Illustrator version 4.1
Adobe Photoshop version 3
HP assumes that you have a basic familiarity with both the version of Windows you are using and the application for which you are installing PANTONE color support.
Enabling PANTONE Support in the Printer Driver
Before printing any job from any application using PANTONE color support, you must enable PANTONE support in your printer driver. Follow the instructions "To Access the Printer Driver" and "To Enable PANTONE in the Print Driver" ONLY if you plan to use PANTONE color support every time you print to your color printer. This will make PANTONE the default selection for your printer.
If you do not plan to always use PANTONE color support, you must change the setting to PANTONE from your application each time you print using PANTONE color support. You can access the print driver in most applications by choosing ôPrint - Setupö or ôPrint - Options.ö Then follow the instructions "To Enable PANTONE in the Print Driver."
To enable PANTONE support in Windows 95:
To access the print driver:
1. Double-click My Computer.
2. Double-click Printers.
3. In the printers box, select the HP Color LaserJet Printer.
4. Click File in the printers box, and select Properties.
To enable PANTONE in the Print Driver
1. Click the Details tab.
2. Click the Setup button (at the bottom left of the Details page).
3. On the Setup page, in the Color Treatment section , click the button labeled PANTONE.
4. Click ôOKö to close the dialogs.
In Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11:
To access the print driver:
1. Double-click Control Panel in Program Manager.
2. Double-click Printers to open the Printers dialog box.
3. Make sure the selected printer is your HP Color LaserJet 5/5M printer. If this is not your currently selected printer you will need to select it manually.
4. Click Setup to select the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M Print Driver.
To enable PANTONE in the Print Driver
1. Click the Details tab.
2. Click the Setup button (at the bottom left of the Details page).
3. On the Setup page, in the Color Treatment section, click the button labeled PANTONE.
4. Click OK twice to close the dialogs and save the new setting.
In Windows NT 3.51
Note that you will not be able to access the print driver directly in Windows NT unless you have Supervisor-level access. You can still access the driver from your application by choosing Print - Setup or Print - Options. Changes made through the application affect the current job only.
To access the print driver:
1. From the Main Menu, double-click Print Manager.
2. Highlight the printer icon for the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M printer.
3. Double-click Properties.
To enable PANTONE in the Print Driver
1. Click the Details tab.
2. On the Details page, click Job Defaults.
3. Click Color Setup.
4. In the Control box within Color Setup, click Use PANTONE Colors, then click OK.
5. Click OK in the Caution dialog if it appears.
6. Click OK twice to exit the print driver. If you accessed the driver using the instructions "To Access the Print Driver" above, you will need to click OK a third time to exit back to the print manager screen.
Printing the color palette:
The preferred method for printing the color palette is using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
1. From Adobe Acrobat Reader, open a file called HPCLJ5M.PDF (located in the Acrobat directory).
2. Print the palette.
If you donÆt have access to Adobe Acrobat, you can print the palette from a DOS prompt. Before printing the color palette, you will need to make certain that the file HPCLJ5M.PS is available. This file is shipped in a self-extracting archive format to save space on the distribution disk. The archive file is named RAWPS.EXE, and will be in the RAWPS subdirectory on your distribution disk.
Use a DOS prompt, Windows File Manager, or Windows Explorer to copy the archive RAWPS.EXE to a directory on your hard drive.
If using File Manager or Explorer, double-click RAWPS.EXE to extract HPCLJ5M.PS to your hard drive.
If using a DOS prompt, type RAWPS and press enter to extract HPCLJ5M.PS to your hard drive.
To print the PANTONE color palette on your printer:
1. Start a DOS prompt by double-clicking on the MS-DOS icon (in Windows 3.x or Windows NT 3.51) or by choosing MS-DOS Prompt from the Start menu (in Windows 95).
2 Change the drive and directory to the location of the file HPCLJ5M.PS. This file should be either in the same directory or subdirectory as this ReadMe file, on the same floppy disk or CD-ROM.
3. After verifying that the file HPCLJ5M.PS is in your current drive and directory, use the command:
COPY /B HPCLJ5M.PS LPT[x]
replacing [x] with the actual number of the printer port your printer is attached to . For instance, if your printer is on LPT1 (the most common location), the command would be:
COPY /B HPCLJ5M.PS LPT1
Some Windows 95 or NT users may need to use a print queue path rather than an LPT port. If so, the command would look more like the following:
COPY /B HPCLJ5M.PS YOUR_SRV//YOUR_PQ1
This will print the complete PANTONE color palette. It can be made into a swatch booklet as a permanent reference.
General instructions for using PANTONE color support in applications not listed:
Specific instructions are provided later in this file for installing PANTONE color support for several popular desk-top publishing applications. If your application is listed, read and follow the instructions for that application. If your application is not listed, you may still be able to use PANTONE colors in that program through EPS charts or TIFF charts.
Using EPS or TIFF charts to import PANTONE colors for applications not otherwise supported:
Many graphics and desktop publishing programs allow the import of EPS and/or TIFF files. Most programs also have an ôeyedropperö tool, which you can use to pick up colors out of an imported graphic. If necessary, you can use the EPS or TIFF files to import colors into any application that supports one of these formats and has an eyedropper tool (or functional equivalent).
1. Locate the EPS or TIFF files. They should be on the same disk as this ReadMe, in a subdirectory called EPSCHARTS (EPS files) or HP55MTIF (TIFF files).
If you got this file on floppy disk rather than CD-ROM, they could be on one of the other disks in the package.
These files are stored in a compressed format to save space on the distribution disks. The compressed files are named EPSCHART.EXE (EPS format) and TIFCHART.EXE (TIFF format).
2. Copy the compressed file onto a directory on your hard drive. This may be done with the DOS copy command, Windows File Manager, or Windows Explorer.
3. Extract the charts, either by double-clicking on the file in Program Manager or Explorer or by typing the name of the file at a DOS prompt. This will decompress the files and place them on your hard disk in the same directory as the compressed files.
4. On the printout you made earlier of the PANTONE color palette, locate the color that you want to import. (The instructions for printing out the full PANTONE color palette are earlier in this ReadMe. If you have not already done so, please refer to those instructions and print the PANTONE color palette before continuing.)
5. Note which number appears at the bottom of the column containing your color on the printout.
This may range from 1-92, and may include decimal values, for instance, 5.4, 5.5.
Also note the PANTONE CHC number, directly under the swatch containing your color on the PANTONE color palette.
For instance, 106 CHC refers to a shade of yellow on the first page of your printout, in column three.
6. Refer to the following chart to determine which chart file contains the color you want:

7. Open or Import the EPS or TIFF file containing the desired color.
8. After opening the proper chart file, find the exact color you wish to use by referring to the CHC number. These numbers are listed below the color swatch in both the PANTONE color palette printout and in the EPS or TIFF file.
For example, to load the shade of yellow 106 CHC mentioned earlier, first open 1-16.eps or 1-16.tif, then find the color swatch in the EPS file. Directly below the swatch containing this color will be the number 106.
Text File
Also included on your diskette is an ASCII text format file named HPCLJ5M.TXT This format may be helpful if you are working in a program that does not support loadable color palettes and cannot import an EPS or TIFF file. You can open the file in a word processor, text editor, or a spreadsheet program and print a crib sheet of the colors and their definitions.
You can use this sheet to set up the colors in your program. This ReadMe does not provide detailed instructions for using the information in HPCLJ5M.TXT to set up PANTONE colors since the procedure is different for each program. However, if you are already familiar with how to manually create CMYK color values in your application, this file may be useful to you.
Importing Color Palettes in CorelDraw! versions 5 and 6
CorelDraw! versions 5 and 6 allow the import of entire color palettes through palette (.PAL) files. Your distribution disk includes a file called HP55MPCL.PAL, in a subdirectory of the distribution disk named \APPLICAT\COREL\. If you received this file on floppy disk, you may need to look on another disk in the set. Copy HP55MPCL.PAL to the directory on your hard disk where other CorelDraw! files are stored (search for *.PAL) to make it permanently available to CorelDraw!. We recommend copying to the CorelDraw! CUSTOM directory.
In the following instructions we assume you have already enabled PANTONE settings in your print driver as described earlier. If you have not enabled PANTONE settings in your printer driver, you may still load the PANTONE palette into CorelDraw!, but you must enable PANTONE settings in your print driver before actually printing. Otherwise the colors will not print properly.
Importing Color Palettes in CORELDRAW! version 5
1. Start CorelDraw! from Program Manager or the Start Menu.
2. Click and hold a moment on the Fill Tool - (on the toolbar, this tool looks like a paint bucket, tilted to one side with paint ready to spill out). This will cause a second tool bar to appear at a right angle, with 12 different fill tools.
3. Select the Palette Tool. This tool looks like a ôpie-chart,ö a circle divided into 8 sections of various colors. Selecting this tool will open the Uniform Fill dialog box.
4. A small dialog box appears to determine what types of objects you want the palette changes to affect. Check all of the available boxes, then click OK.
If this dialog box does not appear, you have selected an object before selecting the palette tool. In this case click on cancel, make sure that no objects are selected, and try again.
5. When the Uniform Fill dialog box appears, look in the lower left hand corner of the box for the Custom Palettes button. Click on this button to activate the Custom Palettes pop-up.
6. Select the option Open. This will activate the Open Palette dialog box.
7. Activate the drop down bar List Files of Type: and select Process Palette (*.pal) from the list of options.
8. If you have copied HP55MPCL.PAL to your CUSTOM directory already, that file should appear in the file list. If you did not copy the .PAL file to this directory, you will have to type in the correct path or browse until you find the correct path. Click HP55MPCL.PAL to select it, then OK to load the palette.
Importing Color Palettes in CORELDRAW! version 6
1. Start CorelDraw! from Program Manager or the Start Menu.
2. Click and hold a moment on the Fill Tool - (on the toolbar, this tool looks like a paint bucket, tilted to one side with paint ready to spill out). This will cause a second tool bar to appear at a right angle, with 12 different fill tools.

Importing Color Palettes in Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator loads color palettes through the Open command from the File menu. Once opened, the colors are available in the Custom Colors box.
The PANTONE color palette for Adobe Illustrator is named HP55MPCL.AI, and is located in the subdirectory of the distribution disk named \APPLICAT\ADOBE\ILLUSTRA. HP recommends you copy this file to the directory on your hard drive where other Adobe Illustrator files are stored (search for *.AI) to make it permanently available to Adobe Illustrator.
To open a color palette in Adobe Illustrator 4.x:
1. Start Adobe Illustrator.
2. From the File menu, select Open.
3. Locate your color palette. The file name is HP55MPCL.AI. Select the color palette and click Open or double-click the color palette name.
To use the PANTONE color pallet in Adobe Illustrator 4.x:
1. Follow the previous steps to open the color palette.
2. Select File - Open or File - New to open the Adobe Illustrator file in which you wish to use PANTONE colors.
3. From the Paint menu, select Paint Style.
4. In the Paint Style dialog, check Custom Colors for both Fill and Stroke. This will make the PANTONE colors available for use.
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop does not allow you to define names for colors. If you use colors that are similar to each other, it may be difficult for you to see the difference between the colors. If you are working with an extensive palette or you want to see the color names, you may want to refer to the generic instructions toward the beginning of this document for using EPS files.
The PANTONE color palette for Adobe Photoshop is named HP55MPCL.ACO, and is located in the subdirectory of your distribution disk named \APPLICAT\ADOBE\PHOTOSHO. HP recommends you copy this file to the directory on your hard drive where other Photoshop files are stored (search for *.ACO) to make it permanently available to Adobe Photoshop.
To open a color palette in Photoshop 3.0:
1. Open Adobe Photoshop 3.0.
2. If the Palette swatches are not displayed, from the Window menu, select Palettes, Show Swatches.
3. Click the arrow in the upper right corner of the Swatches Window to select Load Swatches.
4. Select the color palette (the file name is HP55MPCL.ACO) and click Open. If you do not see this file, check the dropdown bar titled ôList files of format type.ö Make certain this is set to ACO files rather than ACT files.
To use a color from your color palette:
1. Click the Paint Bucket Tool.
2. Select one of the custom colors in the Swatches window.
3. Click anywhere on an object to fill it with the selected color.
Before you apply the calibrated colors in Photoshop, convert the document to work in CMYK mode.
Adobe PageMaker 5.x and 6.x
PageMaker 5.x and 6.x support both BCF (Binary Color Format) and ACF (ASCII Color Format). The files HP55MPCL.ACF and HP55MPCL.BCF are the color palette files for Adobe Pagemaker, and are located in the subdirectory of the distribution disk named \APPLICAT\ADOBE\PAGEMAKE.
You must copy one of these files (it does not matter which one) to your Adobe PageMaker Color directory before proceeding. The color directory is normally \ADOBE\USENGLISH\COLOR, although it could be a different drive or directory depending on your system. Search for *.*CF and move HP55MPCL.ACF or HP55MPCL.BCF to that location.
To open a color palette in PageMaker 5.x and 6.x:
1. Open Adobe PageMaker 5.x or 6.x.
2. From the Element menu, select Define colors.
3. In the Define Colors dialog box, click New to add new colors.
4. In the Edit Color dialog box, click the Libraries arrow.
5. Select the color palette for use in PageMaker 5.x or 6.x and click Open. The file name is either HP55MPCL.ACF or HP55MPCL.BCF.
6. Select the colors from this palette which you wish to import.
To select a subset of colors:
Click the first color you want to use.
If the colors you want to use are all together, hold the shift key and drag from the first color to the last color that you want to use.
To select several colors which do not appear all together, hold down the control key and, one at a time, click the other colors you want to use in this PageMaker document.
After you select the colors, click OK.
Note that PageMaker can only import a maximum of 500 colors at once, so if you select more than 500 colors an error message will result and only the first 500 colors will be loaded.
7. Click OK to close the Edit Color dialog box. Click OK again to close the Define
Color dialog box.
To use colors from your color palette:
1. If the Color Palette window is not open, from the Windows menu, select Color Palette.
2. Select the object in your PageMaker document that you want to color.
3. In the Colors Palette box, select Fill if you want to apply the color to the object, Line to apply color to the line (border), or Both to apply color to the object and its border.
4. Select a color in the Colors window to apply the color to the selected object.
QuarkXpress 3.3x
You must add colors to a QuarkXpress color palette by importing an EPS file. QuarkXpress adds the colors in an EPS file to its color list. Once the colors are in your QuarkXpress color list, you may use the colors in your document.
The EPS files for use in QuarkXpress are stored on the distribution disk in the subdirectory APPLICAT/QUARK. Although the names are similar, these are not the same files as those in the directory EPSCHART.
To use the EPS files provided for QuarkXpress:
1. Open QuarkXpress.
2. On the printout you made earlier of the PANTONE color palette, locate the color that you
want to import. (The instructions for printing out the full PANTONE color palette are
earlier in this ReadMe. If you have not already done so, please refer to those instructions
and print the PANTONE color palette before continuing.)
3. Note which number appears at the bottom of the column containing your color on the printout.
This may range from 1-92, and may include decimal values, for instance, 5.4, 5.5.
4. Refer to the following chart to determine which chart file contains the color you want:

5. Select File - Open and open the correct EPS file. The colors are automatically loaded
into your palette for use in QuarkXpress.
Depending on your system configuration, QuarkXpress may not be able to add all the colors in the PANTONE Library into the color list. The number of colors within a QuarkXpress palette is limited by the amount of memory you have allocated to the program and the complexity of the file.
Do not rename PANTONE Colors created in ColorDrive from within QuarkXpress. Removing the leading space in front of the color name causes QuarkXpress to redefine the color from its built-in values.
MicroGrafx Designer 6.x
The palette file for MicroGrafx Designer version 6 is named HP55MPCL.PL4. Before using the palette, HP recommends that you copy this file to the directory on your hard disk where other MicroGrafx Designer files are stored (search for *.PL4) before using. You will need to know what drive and directory this file resides in to use the following instructions.
To open a color palette in MicroGrafx Designer:
1. Open MicroGrafx Designer.
2. Click Style in the toolbox. (The Style icon looks like a bucket of paint tilted on itÆs side with paint ready to spill.)
3. Click Palette options on the ribbon. (This Icon looks like a painterÆs palette.)
4. Click Palette Manager.
5. From the Palette Manager dialog, Click Import.
6. Click the down arrow in the List Files of Type list box.
7. Select PL4 files.
8. Change to the appropriate drive and directory, if necessary.
9. Highlight the file HP55MPCL.PL4.
10. Click Open.
11. Click the down arrow in the Current Palette list box and select the PANTONE palette.
To use PANTONE colors in MicroGrafx Designer:
1. Select the object to which you want to apply the color.
2. From the Color Palette Bar select the color you want to use.
MacroMedia FreeHand 4 and 5
MacroMedia FreeHand 4.x and 5.x support both BCF and ACF. The PANTONE color palette is provided in the files HP55MPCL.ACF and HP55MPCL.BCF.
You can store the custom color palette anywhere on your hard disk, for example in the Color folder, in the Usenglish folder, or in the FreeHand folder. (If you are unsure where to put the files, search for *.*CF and move the files to the directory thatÆs found.)
If you save your palette in the Color folder, it automatically appears on the Options menu in the Color List dialog box the next time you open FreeHand.
To open a color palette in FreeHand 4.x and 5.x:
1. Open FreeHand 4.x or 5.x.
2. From the File menu, select New, or open an existing FreeHand document.
3. If the Color List window is not open, from the Windows menu, select Color List.
4. Open the Options menu in the Color List palette.
5. If you stored your color palette in the Colors folder, select the color palette name in the Options list.
If you stored your color palette anywhere else, from the Options menu, select Import. Navigate to the drive and directory where you placed the file.
Select the file HP55MPCL.ACF or HP55MPCL.BCF and click Open.
6. To include all colors from your color palette hold down the shift key and drag through all of the colors, then click OK.
To select a subset of colors, click the first color you want to use. Hold down the command key and, one at a time, click the other colors you want to use in this FreeHand document. After you select your colors, click OK.
To use colors in FreeHand 4.x and 5.x:
Select the object to which you wish to apply color. In the Color List dialog box, click the color you wish to apply.
FreeHand 3.x
Earlier versions of FreeHand did not support either BCF or ACF. and instead use .CLB format. The file HP55MPCL.CLB is included for users of earlier versions of FreeHand.
To open a color palette in FreeHand 3.x:
1. Open FreeHand 3.x.
2. Open an existing document, or from the File menu, select New.
3. If the Colors window is not open, from the View menu select the Windows menu, then select Colors.
4. Click the arrow on the right side of the Colors window and select Import.
5. Select the color palette you saved and click Open.
6. To include all colors from your color palette in the current FreeHand document, hold down the shift key and drag through all the colors, and click OK.
To select a subset of colors, click the first color you want to use. Hold down the command key and, one at a time, click the other colors you want to use in this FreeHand document.
When your colors are selected, click OK.
To use colors from your color palette:
1. Select the object you want to color.
2. From the Colors window, select the Fill box.
Select Fill if you want to fill the object, Line if you want to fill the line (border), or Both if you want to fill both the object and its border.
3. Select a color in the Colors window to apply the color to the selected object.
