PURPOSE OF THIS README FILE
This ReadMe file is supplied primarily for Network Administrators. It will also benefit advanced users of network operating systems and network printers. It provides specific installation instructions and other information Network Administrators should know before they or their end users install and use the Printing System. Installation instructions are provided for the following operating systems:
ò Windows 3.1x
ò Windows 95
ò Windows NT 3.51
ò Windows NT 4.0
For instructions on installing OS/2 printer drivers, MacOS printer drivers, or HP JetAdmin for LAN Server, see the associated ReadMe files or online help for that particular system.
WHO NEEDS THIS SOFTWARE?
The Printing System software is required to operate an HP LaserJet 5Si/5Si MX/5Si NX printer or an HP LaserJet 5Si mopier from a network or from a standalone workstation. Network Administrators can choose to install subsets of the Printing System or the full Printing System on a network server. A minimal driver may be installed via the operating system. Network clients will need the installation CD or disk set, or the name of the appropriate network directory, to install the software on their individual workstations.
WHAT'S NEW?
New features of the HP LaserJet 5Si family:
Support for printer-based electronic collation.
A hard disk must be installed in your printer, as well as firmware for an existing 5Si. To purchase an upgrade kit, which includes the required firmware, contact your local HP Dealer and ask for Part Number C4101A.
Support for stapling
To staple documents, you must have an HP LaserJet 5Si mopier, or an HP LaserJet 5Si/5Si MX/5Si NX printer with the Mailbox bin with Stapler attached. To order the Mailbox bin with Stapler, contact your local HP Dealer and ask for Part Number C3766A.
HP DocWise
This document monitoring feature is part of the printer driver and is available to Windows 3.1x or Windows 95 clients with full functionality or NetWare versions 3.x or 4.x. It can notify you automatically when certain events occur that are related to the printing of your document (also referred to as a print job). Helpful tips are also presented to assist you in getting the most out of your new HP LaserJet printer or mopier. You can close an HP DocWise window at any time.
HP Toolbox
HP Toolbox is a one-step tool that provides access to document status, printer or mopier status, and "Show-Me-How" information. It is available to Windows 3.1x and Windows 95 clients on Novell NetWare 3.x or 4.x and is installed with the printer driver. From the Toolbox, which is accessed from the printer or mopier icon on the desktop in Windows 3.1x or on the taskbar in Windows 95, users can also configure printer alerts and launch other utilities like HP FontSmart. If you choose not to use HP Toolbox, it can be disabled easily in Windows 3.1x by right-clicking from the Printers icon or in Windows 95 by selecting "Remove from Tray."

***********************************
III. HINTS/ISSUES
***********************************
ALL WINDOWS PLATFORMS
Collation
Always turn collation OFF in the application to enable printer-based electronic collation and stapling. The drivers use the "Collation" checkboxes within applications to decide between letting the application generate the collated copies, or letting the printer make the collated copies. If collation is turned on in an application, the driver assumes the application will make all the collated copies and will not recognize separate copies as separate, resulting in incorrect stapling if stapling is selected in the driver. If collation is turned off, the driver will tell the printer to use printer-based electronic collation to make the copies.
Banner Pages
Banner pages are a vestige of products without multiple output bins to help in easing separation and retrieval of documents. On the 5Si family of printers and mopiers, when banner pages are turned on and multiple copies are printed, a separate banner page for each copy will be generated. To avoid this, turn banner pages off. Set the "Late-Breaking Information" section for specific information on how to turn banner pages off in various environments.
PostScript Driver
Data Format Setting
The driver's default setting for Data format is ASCII Data option. ASCII Data option sends all data to the printer in Adobe Communication Protocol. ASCII Data format allows the file to print on any printer.
For faster printing, if your printer is connected directly to your computer via a serial or parallel port and your printer supports a binary data format, or if you intend to print to a printer connected over an AppleTalk or Ethernet, you may want to change the Data format setting from ASCII to one of the binary data formats that is applicable to your setting. For more information, see the Specifying Data Communication Protocol and Format topic in the driver's HELP topics. You can access this topic by clicking on the HELP button in the Advanced PostScript options dialog.
Adobe PageMaker 5.0
Windows metafiles printed from Adobe PageMaker 5.0 in landscape orientation are cut off on the right side. PageMaker 5.0 clips at portrait width.
Workaround: Do not use landscape orientation when printing Windows metafiles from Adobe PageMaker 5.0, or use a later version of PageMaker.
Multiple Master Fonts
The following printers do not support multiple master fonts:
ò LaserWriter Personal NT, PostScript version 51.8
ò TI microLaser PS, PostScript version 52.1
ò TI microLaser XL PS, PostScript version 52.1
ò HP LaserJet IIP PostScript Cartridge, PostScript version 52.2
ò HP LaserJet IIID, PostScript version 52.2
Sending multiple master fonts to these printers might result in a PostScript error.
Workaround: Do not use multiple master fonts with these printers.
Sending Error Handler to Printer With Reduced Memory
If your printer is low in memory, the error handler might not be able to print complete messages if error conditions occur.
Workaround: Either add more memory to your printer or disable the error handler by turning off the Print PostScript Error Information option in the PostScript properties dialog box.
WINDOWS 3.1X/WINDOWS for WORKGROUPS 3.1X/WINDOWS 95
PCL Driver
Booklet on Letter
Booklet printing cannot be applied to an already-created document. Select the appropriate page size in the driver BEFORE creating a document. Doing so will tell your application to give you the appropriate page size. The page setup in your application must match the booklet page size in the driver. The document will be printed 2-up with the pages sorted appropriately for folding into a booklet.
Graphics Modes
Some applications don't work when the Graphics Mode (in "Advanced" settings on the Print Quality Tab) is set to HP-GL/2, Raster, or Raster Graphics and Text. The problems can be alleviated or solved by setting the mode to Automatic, or by trying a different Graphics Mode.
N-Up Scaling Errors
When a document is printed from an application using the n-up feature, some words and symbols are out of place. This occurs because when a document is "shrunk" for n-up printing, rounding errors are unavoidable. When printing greater than 2-up images per page, the purpose of the feature is to provide a thumbnail-sketch of each page. Therefore, the smaller the image, the greater the possibility of misplacement.
Workaround: Try justifying the margins in the application.
Custom Paper Sizes
Some applications, for example AmiPro and Corel, will not dictate a custom paper size to the printer driver. They ask the driver for the paper sizes supported by the printer, then "snap" to the nearest standard paper size.
Workaround: None
PostScript Driver
Custom Page Settings
Windows 95 limits the maximum custom page length to 129 inches. If you specify a value greater than 129, the driver displays an error.
Also, some applications, such as Microsoft WordPad, do not distinguish between the friendly names you have given to printer instances of a given printer model and the name of the printer model itself. When you are specifying custom page settings, these applications display all custom page options defined from any of the printer instances of a given model.
Workaround: For the first condition, do not specify a custom page length greater than 129 inches. The second condition is given for your information only; no workaround is possible.
Type 1 Bold Font Imperfections
The driver provides an emboldening feature for outline fonts (Type 1) that do not have a native bold version, such as Zapf Dingbats. The emboldening process is inexact and might produce slight typographic imperfections.
Workaround: To eliminate typographic imperfections, choose a Type 1 font family that has a native bold face.
Printing TrueType Fonts
Some characters of TrueType fonts, such as the o in the Economicals font, might not print correctly. This problem is due to problems with the fonts themselves.
Workaround: To eliminate font imperfections, you might want to use another font.
Windows 95 Interface Issues
Some Printer properties dialog boxes are part of the Windows 95 operating system and are shared with the Postscript printer driver. These properties dialog boxes, such as Sharing and Details, might have spelling and accelerator key inconsistencies, might not display information as expected, or might not perform properly in other ways.
Also, reactivating the Windows 95 PostScript Installer might cause some discrepancies in these Windows 95 dialog boxes.
Workaround: The next version of the Windows 95 operating system will likely correct these problems.
Unidentifiable Files in \WINDOWS Directory
Whenever you install a printer, the driver creates a WPX file in the \WINDOWS directory, which is a condensed description of the printer's features. When the printer instance is deleted, the driver does not remove the associated WPX file.
Workaround: To remove unnecessary WPX files, choose one of these options:
ò Use RegEdit to access the WPX file registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ CurrentControlSet\control\Print\Environment\Windows 4.0\Drivers\<driver name>, where the driver name in this case is likely ADOBEPS4. At this location, you will find all currently used files for <driver name> printers, where files are indicated in this sample format: WPX file = "$42a32e0.wpx". Delete any WPX files from the Windows directory that you do not find listed in this RegEdit location.
ò Delete all $*.wpx files in the Windows directory. The driver will rebuild the necessary WPX files. With this option, you lose non-default printer settings in the Printers folder and some document settings in documents.
Specifying Available Printer Memory
The PostScript printer driver allows you to specify any value for the Available Printer Memory option in the Device Options properties dialog box. If you specify a value outside the range of your printer, very large files might be generated, printing performance might be poor, or printing might fail.
Workaround: Normally, the default value the PostScript printer driver supplies is adequate for most needs. If you need to change this value, however, make sure the value you set for this option falls within the available memory specifications of your printer. You can get printer memory information by printing a test page from the General properties dialog box.
Margin Conversion Discrepancies
When you set margins in the Unprintable Area dialog box, you specify a number that the PostScript printer driver uses in its calculations of unprintable area. In these calculations, the driver rounds off the numeric value you provide for the unprintable area to its nearest point equivalent. Because of this, you might notice small discrepancies between the numbers you specified and the numbers that appear in the fields after you click OK in the Unprintable Area dialog box.
Workaround: None.
Driver Feature Incompatibility
Sometimes an application might be incompatible with the PostScript printer driver. With those applications, you cannot use certain PostScript printer driver features. For example, you cannot use the following driver features with these applications:
Mirror Image:
Acrobat 2.0
CorelDRAW! 6.0
Exchange 2.0
Illustrator 4.0
Negative Image:
PageMaker 5.0
N-up Format:
Acrobat 2.0
Excel 5.0
Exchange 2.0
PageMaker 5.0
Rotated Landscape:
Acrobat 2.0
Exchange 2.0
PageMaker 5.0
WordPerfect 6.1
Scaling:
Acrobat 2.0
AmiPro 3.1
CorelDRAW! 6.0
Exchange 2.0
FrameMaker 4.0
PageMaker 5.0
Watermark:
Acrobat 2.0
Excel 5.0
Exchange 2.0
Lotus 1-2-3 5.0
Photoshop 3.0
Workaround: Do not use these PostScript printer driver features when running the corresponding applications. Upgrading to more recent versions of some of these applications, such as Acrobat 2.1, allows you to use these features.
Adobe Acrobat (Windows 3.1x only)
For EPS files, Acrobat uses the Number of Copies setting specified for the entire document within Acrobat. This overrides the PostScript printer driver setting of 1 for the Number of Copies option for EPS files, and might lead to unexpected printing results.
Workaround: This problem will be corrected in a future release of Acrobat; in the meantime, set the Number of Copies option in Acrobat to 1.
AmiPro 3.1
When you select a block of justified text and apply the double underline style to it, AmiPro 3.1 documents do not print fully underlined.
Workaround: Use single underlined text, not double-underlined, or try double-underlining one line of text at a time.
Designer
Printing multiple master fonts from the Designer application causes PostScript errors.
Workaround: Do not use multiple master fonts with the Designer application.
FileMakerPro 2.0
FileMakerPro 2.0 documents with integrated graphics print out incorrectly.
Workaround: Upgrade to FileMakerPro 2.1.
FrameMaker 5.0
Printing text with integrated graphics from the FrameMaker 5.0 application results in a PostScript error.
Workaround: Upgrade to FrameMaker 5.1 or 6.0.
Lotus 1-2-3
Lotus 1-2-3 cannot always calculate the text placement of inverted, rotated text. Text might be missing or incorrectly placed in a printout. This problem occurs rarely.
Workaround: None.
Macromedia Freehand 5.0
You might have problems printing the Macromedia Freehand 5.0 sample documents using the PostScript printer driver. Freehand 5.0 expects the Windows 95 driver name to be PSCRIPT.DRV, instead of its real name, ADOBEPS4.DRV.
Workaround: None.
Microsoft Excel 5.0
You might encounter some problems printing from Excel 5.0: Print settings specified from within Excel 5.0 are ignored when the document is printed.
Workaround: Specify the print settings from the Printers folder only.
Microsoft Word (Windows 95 only)
If you change driver settings within the Microsoft Word Page Setup dialog box and select an option that conflicts with your current configuration, the PostScript printer driver cannot inform you of the conflict.
Also in the Page Setup dialog box of Microsoft Word 7.0, Word replaces the custom paper names that you specify with its own fixed names for custom paper; the custom paper settings you have set are still valid and the document prints correctly.
Microsoft Word cannot print dotted borders in color to PostScript printers.
Workaround: For the first incompatibility, change printer settings from the Print dialog box or from the Printers folder. The second incompatibility is mentioned for your information only; no workaround is possible. For the third incompatibility, replace dotted borders with solid borders or dotted black borders.
Persuasion
Persuasion does not save the n-up layout values that you select in the Paper properties dialog box.
Workaround: You must reselect the layout setting each time a document is printed.
Photoshop 3.04
If a conflict exists in the data format selections made within Photoshop 3.04 and in the driver, any file printed from Photoshop 3.04 results in a PostScript error.
Workaround: If your printer is connected over a pure binary channel, such as AppleTalk, and you wish to print in binary format, choose the Pure Binary Data option in the Data Format menu (the Data Format menu is in the Advanced PostScript Options dialog box, which you open by clicking Advanced in the PostScript properties dialog box); then choose binary format in Photoshop 3.04. If you choose any other binary option in the driver (Binary Communications Protocol or Tagged Binary Communications Protocol), you must set the format to ASCII in Photoshop 3.04 to avoid a PostScript error; in this case, your document does not print in binary mode.
PowerPoint 7.0 (Windows 95 only)
PowerPoint 7.0 does not print watermarks in the background. At the beginning of every slide, PowerPoint erases the page and erases any watermark that the driver had placed in the background of the slide.
Workaround: Print watermarks in the foreground.
ICC Profiles (Windows 95 only)
Sometimes ICC profiles supplied by your printer vendor do not conform to Windows 95 Image Color Matching (ICM) requirements. If they do not, you cannot use the PostScript printer driver Color Control feature.
Workaround: Contact your printer vendor for a compliant ICC profile.

IV. LATE-BREAKING INFORMATION
************************************************
For Windows NT 4.0:
ò Windows NT job separator pages do not work correctly with the Windows NT 4.0 PCL driver for the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier.
If you choose to have Windows NT print separator pages between print jobs, the separator pages will be directed to the printer's default output bin, regardless of the output destination for the rest of the job. For example, if a job is sent to the stapling bin and the default destination is the top bin, the job will be placed in the stapling bin, but the separator page will be placed in the top bin. Users who make heavy use of the stapler and wish to use Windows NT's job separation feature may use HP JetAdmin to set the printer's default output destination to the stapling bin. Jobs will be stapled with a loose separator page inserted between each job.
ò In the Windows NT 4.0 section of the ReadMe, there is a list of instructions describing how to assign the printer to a port on your network. Item number 7 says: "Click on the Details tab to input or change your port information." It should say "Ports tab" instead of "Details tab."
