This ReadMe provides installation instructions and software release notes for the HP CLJ5FR PCL printer driver for Windows 95, which has been enhanced for the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M printer.
In order to use the CLJ5FR feature, verify that your printer firmware supports this software enhancement. To do this:
1. Print a self-test page and look on it for the firmware datecode line. If the printer is CLJ5FR enabled, the line will read as follows:
Firmware Datecode: Color LaserJet 5 B_01.12 (960912)
OR
2. Look inside the printer toner lid for the sticker marked B. If you see that sticker, your printer is compatible.
Close all applications and TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs that load at startup (in Windows or DOS) such as virus checkers, fax utilities, etc., and all other applications that may be open. Close any shell utilities such as: Microsoft Office Manager, Norton Desktop, Dashboard, etc.
Hint: In Windows 95, click on the respective icon(s) in the "Taskbar" and then close any applications that may be open. You can also press [Ctrl], [Alt], and [Del] to open the task list. Select each application in the task list and click "End Task" to close that application.
These precautions help ensure a successful installation. After installing the HP Color LaserJet 5 Printing System, you can restart these programs.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

If you have received ONLY the CLJ5FR Printer Driver files (for example, through electronic distribution services), go to the section below entitled "Installation Instructions û Driver Only.ö
For instructions on installing the Printing System for OS/2, DOS, or MacOS, see the associated ReadMe files or online help for that particular system.
When operating in a Windows environment, the setup software will detect the version of the operating system that you are running. The software will be installed in the language that you have selected in your Windows Control Panel. This means that you can be running an English version of Windows and have the language preference set to Spanish, and the installation utility will install the Spanish version of the printing software.
Network Administrator
The installer will provide this option only if it detects that a user is running a shared copy of Windows and has read/write capabilities. It copies installation files to the shared Windows directory on the network. Network users can then install the Printing System using the shared Windows directory.
NOTE
Either before or after installation, copy the installation CD-ROM or disk set to a network location using the Disk Image Copy option on the installation CD-ROM, or by using File Manager or DOS commands.
1. Close all applications, virus checkers and terminate stay resident (TSR) programs. After installation, these programs can be restarted.
2. Insert the CD-ROM, or go to the Disk 1 subdirectory on your network drive, if you already copied the installation CD-ROM to the network.
3. From the Start menu on your taskbar, select Run.
4. Select the SETUP.EXE program file in the root directory on the CD-ROM drive or a network drive location, if you already copied the installation CD-ROM to the network.
5. The Install Wizard will prompt you for specific information. At each prompt, select the
appropriate response and click Next.
Shared User
The Typical install assumes the client is running Windows 95 on a NetWare network. If that is not the case, use the Custom install.
1. Close all applications, turn off virus checkers and terminate stay resident (TSR)
programs. After installation, these programs can be restarted.
2. Insert the CD-ROM or go to network drive location as assigned by Network
Administrator.
3. From the Start menu on your taskbar, select Run.
4. Select the SETUP.EXE program file in the root directory on the CD-ROM drive or
a network drive location as assigned by the Network Administrator.
5. The Install Wizard will prompt you for specific information. At each prompt, select the
appropriate response and click Next.
Upgrading from Windows 3.1 or Windows For Workgroups 3.11 to Windows 95
In the future, Microsoft may include mini-driver support for the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M printer in Windows 95. If you have also installed the HP Color LaserJet 5 Printing System, you may find multiple printer drivers available on your system or you may be unsure which driver has been installed. Perform the following steps to identify the driver you are using:
1. From the Start menu on your taskbar, select Settings and then select Printers.
2. Right-click on the printer name and then click on "Properties"
3. At the "Properties" screen, click on the "Print Test Page" button.
The "Windows 95 Printer Test Page" will include the following information if you are using the provided HP Color LaserJet 5/5M PCL driver:
For the HP supplied printer driver:
Printer Name: <user definable>
Printer Model: HP Color LaserJet 5/5M (HP)
Driver Name: HPPCL5F.DRV
Selecting a printer driver as default in Windows 95:
Be sure that the printer name associated with the "HPPCL5F.DRV" printer driver supplied by HP is used as the default (installing the HP Color LaserJet 5 Printing System will automatically make HPPCL5F.DRV the default). To verify or select a default printer:
1. From the Start menu on your taskbar, select Settings and then select Printers.
2. Double-click on the printer name.
3. In the <printer name> screen, click on "Printer."
The "Set As Default" menu item should have a checkmark. If it does not, click on it to make this printer driver the default.
You must use the procedure described below to install the entire printing system. While the driver may be installed through the Control Panel printer installation, other parts of the printing system such as HP FontSmart, HP JetAdmin, and HP JetPrint will not be installed.
The installer will provide this option only if it detects that a user is running a shared copy of Windows and has read/write capabilities. It copies installation files to the shared Windows directory on the network. Network users can then install the Printing System using the shared Windows directory.

2. Exit and restart Windows.
3. Insert the CD-ROM, or go to the Disk 1 subdirectory on your network drive if you already copied the installation CD-ROM to the network.
4. From the Start menu on the taskbar, select Run.
5. Click Browse.
6. Select the SETUP.EXE program file in the root directory on the CD-ROM, or a network drive location if you already copied the installation CD-ROM to the network. Click OK.
7. Verify that SETUP.EXE is entered in the Command Line in the Run window and click OK.
8. Click Continue.
9. Select the Network Administrator option and follow the prompts, selecting the
The Network Administrator step requires that you have Network and DOS READ/WRITE privileges for the shared directory. This directory and the shared files are often file attributed to READ ONLY. The Printing System installer will detect if READ/WRITE privileges are not available. Users must have READ/WRITE privileges for their "Windows" or local directory for the second step of the installation. Ensure no files are READ ONLY attributed in these directories.
Ensure that the DOS "path" statement is correct for the shared and user's directories into which you will be installing. Failing to ensure this for each of the installation steps below will result in an unpredictable and incomplete installation.
If HP FontSmart is installed, the installer will create a directory in the shared directory called "HPFONTS" for all FontSmart system files to be shared. Select the button "Change Directory" at the "Select Components" menu to change this location. The installer will also configure FontSmart for use in the Administrator's directory during a normal FontSmart installation. To avoid this, at the "Select Components" menu, click on the button "Font Options...". In the Options menu, select "Custom Font Selection". Click on "OK" and continue with the installation.
If you obtained ONLY a printer driver and its associated files (for example, through HP Electronic Services), you can install them into Windows 95 using the instructions below:
For WINDOWS 95:
Follow the instructions found in section above: "INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS - Stand-alone Windows 95". After pressing the "Have Disk" button, type in the appropriate path name (<drive>:\<directory name>)to where these files are located and click on "OK". Follow the instructions on your screen.
CLJ5FR is a new feature available with HP PCL drivers for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. It is designed to provide improved print speeds for bitmapped images such as clip art, photos, Internet images, scanned images. For detailed information on how the CLJ5FR feature impacts printing speeds, refer to the Update Notice for the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M Printer Getting Started Guide and UserÆs Guide.
Printer Firmware Compatibility
To use the CLJ5FR your printer firmware datecode must be version ôB_01.12 (960112)ö or above. To determine your firmware version, you can run a self-test page, or look for the ôBö sticker under your printer toner lid (the sticker will also be placed on the top of the printer box in the lower right-hand corner). If your printer firmware is not updated and you install or turn on CLJ5FR, any bitmapped images will be illegible. If this problem occurs it will be immediately obvious (not a subtle impact to image quality, but a complete remapping of the image colors and shapes.)
Note
You will not notice the compatibility problem if you print only text or graphics (or images with 8-bit color), because the CLJ5FR feature is not invoked for those elements.
Installation and Use
The CLJ5FR feature can be enabled as the default when you install drivers by selecting HP Color LaserJet 5/5M (CLJ5FR). If you select HP Color LaserJet 5/5M, the CLJ5FR feature will be available, but it will be disabled as the default.
Enabling and Disabling CLJ5FR
CLJ5FR can be enabled or disabled using the CLJ5FR Control Panel menu. To access this menu:
1. Click the Start button on the taskbar.
2. Select Run.
3. In the Open command line, type the path to the system directory followed by HPCCPANL.EXE (for example, c:\win95\system\hpccpanl.exe), and click OK
4. In the screen that appears, select the printer that you wish to control and then click OK.
Note
The default setting for CLJ5FR is Enabled.
This menu can be used to enable or disable the feature regardless of whether you enabled the feature as the default during installation. This menu also makes it convenient to enable or disable the feature for each printer to which you have access on your network (as appropriate to the firmware revision level of each printer).
Online help files are included for the HP Color LaserJet 5 Printing System, HP FontSmart, and the HP Font Installer Screens. Choose Help from these screens to access help information.
HP Color LaserJet Users
If you currently have the HP Color LaserJet driver (ver. 1.01) installed on your system, installing the HP Color LaserJet 5 Printing System will overwrite these driver files. Your HP Color LaserJet driver will NOT be erased, however. Instead, it will be automatically updated. The new HP Color LaserJet driver will have property pages similar to the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M driver, but it will reflect the features and capabilities of the HP Color LaserJet printer.
Because of file name conflicts, it is not possible to have the HP Color LaserJet driver (version 1.01) and the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M driver (version 1.20) loaded on your computer at the same time. If you need both, upgrade to version 1.20.
Installation from a Local or Network Hard Drive
The HP Color LaserJet 5 Printing System will also install the HP Color LaserJet 5 Printing System installation disk images onto a local or networked hard drive for more convenient installations.
Follow the instructions for a normal standalone Windows installation, Choose the "Disk Image Copy" method of installation and follow the instructions. The disk images will be copied into the destination directory in the following manner:

To install the HP Color LaserJet 5 Printing System from the local or network directory, follow the Windows standalone instructions and indicate the local or network directory you would like to install from.
FontSmart Will Not Run on an 80286 CPU
If you have a 286 CPU, the installer will not install FontSmart. The installer will still install the other components of the HP Color LaserJet 5 Printing System.
Printer Not Responding
Select "Retry" if a printer error occurs stating that the printer is not responding, is off-line, or is out of paper. If the problem continues, try increasing the transmission retry time-out time.
1. From the Start menu on your taskbar, select Settings and then select Printers.
2. Right-click on the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M.
3. Choose Properties.
4. Click the Details tab. From the Details page, increase the Transmission Retry time.
Adobe PageMaker
The PageMaker set width feature allows changes to be made to the size and spacing of specified characters. This feature is not supported by the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M Printer when rendering the TrueType fonts which are internal to the printer. The PCL driver now directs Windows to render the font and download it to the printer whenever any application applies changes, such as set width, to fonts internal to the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M Printer.
If you experience problems when printing rotated, skewed, or mirrored images with Adobe PageMaker 5.0, contact Adobe Corporation to order their software patch "ALDIM3.DLL". The Adobe patch in conjunction with the V1.20 HP Color LaserJet PCL driver correct this problem. The patch can be downloaded from the Adobe bulletin board or forums on America Online or CompuServe.
CorelDRAW! Printing Performance
The options below are made available to assist you in improving print speed. Print performance, however, is largely dependent on information in the graphics document being printed.
1. CorelDRAW! 3.0: Improve graphics performance.
a) Open CORELDRW.INI with a text editor. The CORELDRW.INI is in the DRAW subdirectory for CorelDRAW! 3.0b or later. e.g. c:\corel30\coreldrw\draw\coreldrw.ini
b) Go to the section labeled: [CDrawConfig].
c) At the end of this section, enter the following line (exactly as shown): UseClippingForFills=0
d) Save and close the CORELDRW.INI file.
e) Restart CorelDRAW!.
2. CorelDRAW! 4.0 and 5.0 - Improve graphics and scanned image printing performance.
a) Open CORELDRW.INI with a text editor. The CORELDRW.INI file is found in the COREL40\CONFIG subdirectory for Corel 4.0 and 5.0. (for example, c:\corel40\config\coreldrw.ini
b) Go to the section labeled: [Config]
c) At the end of this section, enter the following line (exactly as shown): UseClippingForFills=0
d) Save and close the CORELDRW.INI file.
The setting below affects the printing of raster images only.
a) Open the CORELPRN.INI file with a text editor. The CORELPRN.INI file is also located in the CONFIG sub-directory.
b) Go to the section labeled: [Config]
c) Find the following line: DumpEntireBitmap=0. Changed to read: DumpEntireBitmap=1.
d) Save and close the CORELPRN.INI file
e) RESTART CorelDRAW!.
Changing this entry from 0 to 1 allows CorelDRAW! to send raster data in blocks rather than line by line. This should improve processing time of raster intense files and should improve memory performance.
The HP Color LaserJet 5/5M driver has been enhanced to include a new user interface which looks and acts like a card file. By clicking on a tab, the page displays the settings associated with that tab. After the desired driver changes have been made on all property sheets, the user clicks the "OK" button (located at the bottom of the page) to save all driver settings. For more information on the settings on any page, press the Help button at the bottom of that page.
HP ColorSmart
ColorSmart is the recommended solution for people who want exceptional color output. ColorSmart automates your printer's color controls. It intelligently analyzes your documents to be printed, identifies the objects on each page, then automatically maximizes the vibrancy and clarity of the printed output.
PANTONE(R)* Colors
The HP Color LaserJet 5/5M printer is licensed to print PANTONE(R)* colors. In order to print accurate PANTONE(R)* colors, users must select the PANTONE(R)* Color Treatment option on the Setup property page. In addition, users must input the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M specific values into their PANTONE(R)* licensed application. These HP Color LaserJet 5/5M specific values will be provided by an application specific palette or by a list of RGB or CMYK values necessary to render the specific PANTONE(R)* color. The palettes (or values) are provided to users through the Hewlett-Packard Driver Distribution Center. Instructions on how to obtain drivers can be found at the end of this note. See your application's documentation for instructions on adding palettes or modifying colors with specific RGB or CMYK values.
