  25. Usage:
  26.  
  27. After start the program tries to determine all accessible SCSI/IDE
  28. devices installed on your system. The devices are shown in a list.
  29. Furthermore the program tries to identify the recorder(s) in your
  30. system and selects it as device to read the ATIP from. A different
  31. device may be selected by clicking the device to select in the list.
  32. To read the ATIP/information from the media using the device selected
  33. just press the upper of the two buttons. To put the information into
  34. the clipboard just press the other button.
  35. The information for min. and max. recording speed is not available
  36. on many discs (e.g. Kodak)... most of the time you┤ll just get an
  37. unknown min. and max. speed.

  40. This tool is freeware and may be distributed as it is. Commercial
  41. use is not allowed without written permission!

  44. Background information:
  45.  
  46. This small tool was developed to read the ATIP from a CDR media
  47. using a CD recorder - right now there┤s no CDROM reader that can
  48. do this (At least I don┤t know of!).
  49. The ATIP tells who has manufactured the disc and what dye type
  50. they used. (The ATIP doesn┤t tell the exact dye type - it just
  51. tells if the recording strategy to be used for this media is
  52. a "long strategy type" (e.g. Cyanine) or "short strategy type"
  53. (e.g. Phthalocyanine).
  54.  
  55. The program should work with most current SCSI-3 compliant recorders.
  56. Unfortunately reading the ATIP from a CDR is specified as an optional
  57. command so not all recorders (e.g. TEAC 55S and older ones) do not
  58. support this feature. Furthermore there are some recorders that support
  59. reading the ATIP with so-called vendor-unique-commands, that means
  60. they support it by using commands that are unique to this device
  61. (e.g. Philips/HP recorders). Support for these devices might/will be
  62. added in one of the next versions... (I do not have very much
  63. information on these devices!)

  65. To use the program under Win95/98 there should be an ASPI manager
  66. installed on the system. The ASPI layer that ships with Win9x/ME
  67. is an old implementation from Adaptec and only works with SCSI drives
  68. (There┤s a possibility to make it work with IDE drives, but I would not
  69. recommend doing that!) If you┤ve got an IDE recorder connected to your
  70. Win95/98-System you should try to upgrade to a newer ASPI manager from
  71. Tekram┤s website

  77. When using this program under WindowsNT it should always
  78. work with either SCSI- or IDE-drives even if there┤s no ASPI manager
  79. installed. If it┤s not working install an ASPI layer!

  81. More technical information:
  82. The program is currently trying to read the ATIP using two different
  83. commands. The first command (which works on my Plextor recorder)
  84. is the "Read TOC/PMA/ATIP" command although "Read TOC" is a mandatory
  85. command in the SCSI3 Specs, reading the ATIP is not! So many recorders
  86. will refuse to read the ATIP using this command. The advantage of this
  87. method is that I can read the ATIP from unrecorded and recorded media.
  88. If this method fails I┤ll also try "Read Session Info" command which
  89. only gives the ATIP if there┤s an empty disc inserted in the drive.
  90. If you know of any other method reading the ATIP please let me know as
  91. I can add support to the program then.
