  15. 32bit Fax, FaxMail for Windows and FaxMail Network for Windows are very
  16. similar with the same look and feel.  32bit Fax and FaxMail Network for
  17. Windows are 32bit and will run on a single computer or network system. If
  18. you need a 16 bit single computer version, try FaxMail for Windows.
  19.  
  20. If you are going to be using FaxMail Network for Windows on a 16bit
  21. version of Windows such as Windows 3.1x or Windows for Workgroups, you
  22. will need to install Win32s, if you have not already done so.  You can
  23. get Win32s.zip, FREE, from Microsoft or search the web,
  24. www.ElectraSot.com, aol, or CompuServe. Win32s allows 16bit Windows to
  25. run some 32bit programs.

  47. DESCRIPTION:
  48. 32bit Fax supports Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT. Supports most FaxModems,
  49. Group 3 CLASS 1, CLASS 2 and CLASS 2.0.  32bit Fax will add a [FaxBar] to
  50. your Windows Programs, giving you access to all the FaxModems and
  51. FaxMachines in the world, making them become your printers.  32BF
  52. attaches itself to and becomes a part of the actual Microsoft Windows
  53. environment, thereby adding its features to all Windows Applications.
  54. 32BF has hundreds of useful features such as Dynamic View/Edit Cover
  55. Page, FaxBook Import/Export, Windows Dynamic All Class FaxModem Driver,
  56. and Technical Support.  You can import up to 1000 name and phone numbers
  57. into each FaxBook (Phone Book) at a time from any xBase data base
  58. program, and you can have as many FaxBooks as you want.  32BF gives you
  59. laser quality fax output, making it a great tool to send an occasional
  60. fax or large numbers of high quality faxes from the background while you
  61. work on other tasks.  32BF bundles the most useful fax features, and it
  62. is fast! The simplicity of information transfer via 32bit Fax is
  63. unequaled.  It is a faxmail management system, integrating FaxModem
  64. technologies into computer document generation. You can create very short
  65. and/or long faxes.  Workstation 1 must have a modem and access to the
  66. root of a common server drive.  All other workstations must have access
  67. to the root of that same common server drive. Workstation 1 receives all

  146. BEFORE ALL ELSE:
  147. We are working full time on improving and upgrading 32bit Fax based upon
  148. the feedback from you and other users.  So...before you install, look at
  149. the date on this file.  If the date is more than a week old, you may want
  150. to get the latest version.

  153. world.  32fax914.zip, where 32fax914 means version x9.14.01.

  163. If you have a Registration Code for 32bit Fax you may *NOT* share it with
  164. others.

  166. 32bit Fax is shareware.  This means you have a chance to test the
  167. performance of 32bit Fax before committing yourself to buying it.  32bit
  168. Fax is a Shareware product and we would like you to REGISTER after
  169. testing this 30 day evaluation copy.

  171. Only the unregistered version of 32bit Fax may be distributed freely, and
  172. no fee may be charged for it except a nominal copying fee.  All
  173. trademarks contained herein are registered to their respective owners.

  176. IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
  177. While converting printer output to a fax, 32BF will need to create and
  178. use a temporary file called [TOFAX] and then delete it when finished.
  179. This file will be in the root of the drive 32BF is installed on.
  180.  
  181. So that ElectraSoft Print to Fax will be able to convert printable files
  182. to faxes, you may want to check the following three things on the drive
  183. that you installed 32BF on:
  184.  
  185.  1. If you have the maximum allowed files in that root directory, remove
  186.     some.
  187.  
  188.  2. If you have a directory called TOFAX on that drive, remove it.
  189.  
  190.  3. If that drive is full, make some room.  The fax converter needs
  191.     about 200k per page.  Keep in mind that Windows itself may need
  192.     5meg+- free on the hard drive.
  193.  
  194. If you are currently using another Modem-Program, remember that they can
  195. not run concurrently on the same COM-Port.
  196.  
  197. If your old Fax Program loads from the Windows StartUp Group as you enter
  198. Windows, you will have to move it's ICON out of your Windows StartUp Group
  199. by grabbing it and dropping it in another Group.

  202. 32BF INSTALLATION:
  203. Make a directory called 32BF_SHR, like this:

  216.   Single computer with no network:
  217.    o You must be Workstation 1.
  218.    o Give [Your Computer Drive] as the drive you want 32BF to use.
  219.    o Give [Server Drive] as the same.
  220.    o You will need a working fax modem.
  221.    o You can send faxes.
  222.    o You can receive faxes.

  224.   Installing on Server as Workstation 1:

  275. AFTER 32BF INSTALLATION:
  276. After installation, you will have several icons in the 32bit Fax Group.
  277. Please note the following icons:

  283. These should be read before using 32bit Fax.  There is also
  284. [Contact-Sensitive Help] buttons, throughout 32bit Fax, for your
  285. convenience.

  287. Everything is explained thoroughly in the 32bit Fax help system, which
  288. may be called upon from anywhere in 32bit Fax.
  289.  
  290. If you want to use 32bit Fax from within any Windows Application and/or
  291. take advantage of *ALL* the power 32BF has, load 32bit Fax from the 32bit
  292. Fax Group before loading any other Windows Applications.
  293.  
  294. After the 32BF program is loaded, click on the [Configure] button and
  295. SetUp and configure things *YOUR WAY*.  I suggest that if you are not sure
  296. of something, leave the defaults set as it came to you.  Make a printout
  297. of the defaults in case you change something you do not understand yet.

  300. WINDOWS 95/98:
  301.  
  302. If you are installing on Windows 95/98 and after rebooting your computer
  303. the [ElectraSoft Print to Fax] does not show up in the printer selection
  304. list, use the Add Printer ICON as follows:
  305.   o  Click [My Computer], [Printers], [Add Printer], and the Add
  306.      Printer Wizard box will appear.
  307.   o  Click [Next].
  308.   o  Click [(*)Local Printer], [Next] to go to the Printer selection box.
  309.   o  Under [Manufacturer:] select [ElectraSoft].
  310.   o  Under [Printers:] select: [ElectraSoft Print to Fax]
  311.   o  Click [Next] to go to the [Available Port:] selection box.
  312.   o  Select [*]?:\TOFAX Unknown local port. Where the ? is the drive you
  313.      installed the fax program on.
  314.   o  Click [Next].
  315.   o  Click [(*)No], [Next].
  316.   o  Click [(*)Yes], [Next] and wait up to one minute.
  317.   o  When asked [Would you like to start the fax program, click [Yes].
  318.   o  Shortly the ElectraSoft [Send Fax] box will appear.
  319.   o  Click [View Fax] to be sure it worked ok.
  320.   o  When asked [Did the test page print correctly] click [Yes].

  325.            Adding [32BF NT Convert to Fax] to Windows NT:

  333.   1. 32BF should have put the following lines in your NTPRINT.INF
  334.      file.  You can move them into alphabetical if you wish, but it is
  335.      not necessary.

  349.   2. Use the Add Printer ICON and respond as follows:
  350.      Note: Some of the following lines my be out of sequence, depending
  351.            on the NT Build.
  352.      o  Click [My Computer], [Printers], [Add Printer], and the Add
  353.         Printer Wizard box will appear.
  354.      o  Click [(*)My Computer], [Next] to go to the Port selection box.
  355.      o  Under [Available ports:] Check-Mark and select [*]?:\TOFAX.
  356.      o  Click [Next] to go to the Printer selection box.
  357.      o  Press [F] on your key-board and select 32BF_NT under
  358.         [Manufactures:] and 32BF NT Convert to Fax under [Printers:].
  359.      o  Click [Next] to go to the Printer name box.
  360.      o  Under [Printer name:] type: 32BF NT Convert to Fax
  361.      o  Click [Next] to go to the Share box.  [(*)Not Shared]
  362.      o  Click [Next] to go to the Print test page box.
  363.      o  Click [Finish] to go to the select printer driver box.
  364.      o  Use the [Browse] button to find fm_pn_nt.dll in the temporary
  365.         directory where you installed 32BF from.  NT will copy
  366.         fm_pn_nt.dll to the directories that it wants it in.  After
  367.         copping fm_pn_nt.dll, NT will try to copy the RASter Devise
  368.         Driver rasdd.dl_ or rasdd.dll, but because rasdd.dl_ is not in
  369.         this directory, a Copy Error box will appear.  Place your NT
  370.         installation CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive and click [Browse].
  371.         Browse to your CD-ROM and select: ?:\I386\rasdd.dl_ by
  372.         double-clicking it.  rasdd.dl_ is a compressed file that NT will
  373.         expand into RASDD.DLL.  Be sure to select rasdd.dl_ and not
  374.         RASDD.DLL!  After coping rasdd.dl_, NT will copy several other
  375.         files from that directory.
  376.         Note:
  377.          If you do not have the NT CD-ROM handy, click [Skip] every time
  378.          you are asked for file(s), including the fm_pn_nt.dll file; as
  379.          the files it wants to copy to your HardDrive are probably already
  380.          there.
  381.         Note:
  382.          Files used by the 32BF NT Convert to Fax FM_PN_NT.DLL driver:
  383.          ?:\WINNT\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\2\RASDD.DLL
  384.          ?:\WINNT\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\2\RASDDUI.DLL

  388.          RASDD.DLL means: Raster Device Driver

  390.      o  Click [OK] and the 32BF NT Convert to Fax ICON will appear in
  391.         the Printers group.

  393.   3. Restart your computer as you would after any installation.
  394.  
  395.   4. To use 32BF NT Convert to Fax, load 32BF and run it in
  396.      background.  Load a program and print to the 32BF NT Convert to
  397.      Fax.
  398.

  400.  WINDOWS NT version 3.XX
  401.  
  402.   1. After installing 32bit Fax, re-boot the computer,
  403.      go to [Main] group and select [Print Manager].
  404.  
  405.   2. From the [Print Manager] select [Printer], [Create Printer].
  406.  
  407.   3. Fill out the information in the dialog box EXACTLY as follows.
  408.      Where the C: in C:\TOFAX is the drive letter of your HardDrive
  409.      where you installed 32BF.  If you installed on D: you will
  410.      select D:\TOFAX from the drop-down list box.
  411.  
  412.      Note:
  413.       o If you can not find [32BF NT Convert to Fax] in the Driver
  414.         drop-down list box it is probably because PRINTER.INF is locked
  415.         or Read-Only.  If this is the case, you will have to unlock it
  416.         and use the 32bit Fax [Change FaxModem Driver]
  417.         ICON to reinstall.

  446.      CD-ROM.

  448.      Note:
  449.       o In most cases all the printer files are already in place.  If
  450.         this is the case, give C:\ (or the drive that you installed
  451.         32BF to) as your NT installation disk.
  452.  
  453.      NT expects to find FM_PN_NT.DLL on your floppies or CD-ROM, but it
  454.      will not be there because this driver only comes with 32BF.  The 32BF
  455.      installation has already put FM_PN_NT.DLL in place, so it is not
  456.      necessary for NT to do so.  For this reason you will get a
  457.      [non-critical error] when NT can not find FM_PN_NT.DLL on your
  458.      floppies or CD-ROM.  When you are presented with a non-critical
  459.      error, select [Ignore].  NT will ignore coping FM_PN_NT.DLL, but
  460.      will copy the printer driver support files that it does have.
  461.      During installation, 32BF creates the following files:
  462.      \WINNT35\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS\W32X86\FM_PN_NT.DLL
  463.      \WINNT35\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS\W32X86\1\FM_PN_NT.DLL
  464.      \WINNT35\SYSTEM32\FM_PN_NT.DLL
  465.      If for some reason they are not there, copy them there from the
  466.      unzipped files that came with 32BF.
  467.

  469.   Notes:
  470.    o During the [32BF NT Convert to Fax] installation, in response to
  471.      [non-critical errors], select [Ignore].
  472.  
  473.    o The reason for this unorthodox installation is that NT expects to
  474.      find the driver, FM_PN_NT.DLL, on your NT installation floppies or

  586. One phone - two phone numbers.  Contact your phone company and order
  587. [Distinctive Ring].  Distinctive Ring is another number that rings in on
  588. your same phone, at a very low cost.  When someone dials your regular
  589. phone number, you will hear a 3 second RING (long RING) every 6 seconds
  590. start-to-start.  When someone (or a fax machine) dials your [Distinctive
  591. Ring] number, you hear 2 short RINGs every 6 seconds start-to-start in the
  592. place of your normal long RING.
  593.  
  594. Be sure you are running a current version [FaxMail Network for Windows]
  595. or [32bit Fax].  Go to the ElectraSoft fax software [Configure], select
  596. [Configure Modem], and set [Type of RINGs to Answer] to [(X)Distinctive
  597. Rings Only].  Give everyone that you want to fax you your [Distinctive
  598. Ring] fax number.  Now the fax software will only answer the faxes, and
  599. not interfere with your voice calls.  If you also have an answering
  600. machine connected; set the answering machine to answer on RING 3 or above.

  602. Solution 2:
  603. Go to the ElectraSoft fax software Setup/Configure and set
  604. [Rings-Until-We-Answer] to [Never]] so the fax software will not answer.
  605. If you answer the phone and find that it is a fax, load the Event Monitor
  606. and click the [Answer Now] button.  When you here the modems negotiating,
  607. hang up and let the fax come it.

  609. Solution 3:

  615. CommShare not only listens for the fax-tone but also for a code that you
  616. can ask the sender to use.  This way you do not miss the fax calls from
  617. the 20% of fax machines that do not send the fax-tone:-)  I bought a
  618. CommShare at Best Buy.

  624. Modems are inexpensive...Get two modems.  Run one phone-line from wall to
  625. Fax-Modem's Line-In-Jack, and another phone-line from said Fax-Modem's
  626. Phone-Jack to Email/Data/Etc-Modem's Line-In-Jack.

  629. SILENT ANSWER:
  630. Silent Answer requires the support and cooperation of the remote sending
  631. FaxModem/Machine with your receiving FaxModem.  If the sending
  632. FaxModem/Machine does not support [Silent Answer] by sending the [CNG]
  633. tone, you will lose that Fax!  Please read *all* of this area before
  634. using [Silent Answer].  If you still want [Silent Answer], here is what
  635. it does and how to implement it.

  637. Silent answer let one telephone line be used for two purposes; receiving
  638. Faxes with the FaxModem, and receiving voice calls with an answering
  639. machine or telephone.  When set to this mode, the FaxModem lets your
  640. answering machine answer all incoming calls.  If it detects Fax [CNG]
  641. tones, it routes the call to 32bit Fax. Otherwise, it just sits silently
  642. on the phone line while you or your answering machine takes the call.
  643.  
  644. When the phone rings and after the second ring the FaxModem will start
  645. monitoring the telephone line.  If it detects a Fax tone, it will receive
  646. the Fax.  If it does not detects a fax tone, it will do nothing.
  647.  
  648. Silent Answer hardware installation When installing the FaxModem, DO NOT
  649. plug the answering machine into the telephone jack on the back of the
  650. FaxModem.  Instead, do one of the following:
  651.  
  652. a. Plug the answering machine and FaxModem into different wall jack (i.e.
  653.    jacks in different rooms).
  654.  
  655. b. Plug the answering machine into a wall jack and the FaxModem into the
  656.    answering machine.
  657.  
  658. c. If your answering machine has some kind of phone-jack switching; use
  659.    this method.  You must locate the two devices on separate extensions
  660.    to make silent answer work correctly.  This means you can not plug the
  661.    answering machine into the FaxModem or vise versa.  You can split a
  662.    single extension with a duplex jack adapter.  Radio Shack commonly
  663.    carries these, part number 279-357 for $4.49.

  665. Also, if you have an older answering machine that does NOT automatically
  666. turn itself off when it detects that a person or the FaxModem has
  667. answered the call, you need a $7.95 adapter from Radio Shack,
  668. part#43-107.  This adapter disconnects the answering machine from the
  669. phone line when the call is answered.  It goes between the answering
  670. machine and the wall jack.

  673.  The device that is picking up the line initially, must answer after, and
  674.  not before, the second ring.  This means you should set it to 3 for best
  675.  results.  If no other device picks up the line by the time the number of
  676.  rings that 32bit Fax is set to is reached, 32bit Fax will answer it and
