  1. BIOS Upgrade Instructions

  4. The temporary directory should contain the following four files:
  5.     BIOINSTR.TXT {this file}
  6.     BIOS.EXE 
  7.     LICENSE.TXT 
  8.     MK_BOOTZ.EXE 
  9.  
  10. If all these files are not present, try extracting the downloaded
  11. BIOS file again.

  13. Creating A Bootable Floppy
  14. --------------------------

  16.     In a DOS environment:
  17.     ---------------------

  19. 1.  If you have an unformatted floppy, place the floppy in 
  20.     drive a: and type "format a: /s".
  21.  
  22. 2.  If you have a formatted floppy, place the floppy in drive a: 
  23.     and type "sys a:".

  26.     In a non-DOS environment:

  29. 1.  Double click on the file æMK_BOOTZ.EXEÆ. This will create a 
  30.     'README.TXT' file. Follow the directions in the 
  31.     'README.TXT' file.

  35. Upgrading to the Latest BIOS
  36. -----------------------------

  39. 1.  Be sure to verify that the correct BIOS has been downloaded. 
  40.     a.  AMI BIOS:  the last three characters will be 
  41.         identical to the current BIOS version
  42.     b.  PhoenixBIOS: the first eleven characters will be 
  43.         identical to the current BIOS version
  44. 2.  Enter BIOS SETUP upon boot up by following the on-screen 
  45.     prompt, ie F1 or F2 depending on the BIOS. 
  46. 3.  Write down all settings that are unique to the system. These
  47.     settings will be needed later to reconfigure the system.
  48. 4.  Create a bootable floppy diskette using the instructions at 
  49.     the beginning of this document. 
  50. 5.  Extract æbios.exeÆ to the bootable floppy:
  51.     a.  In a DOS environment: Type "bios a:".
  52.     b.  In a non-DOS environment: Create a new directory. 
  53.         Move 'bios.exe' into the directory. Double click on 
  54.         'bios.exe'. Copy all the files in the directory 
  55.         except 'bios.exe' to the bootable floppy.
  56. 6.  Place the bootable floppy containing the new BIOS into drive 
  57.     a: of the system to be upgraded and boot the system.
  58. 7.  Press ENTER when prompted.
  59. 8.  Highlight "Update Flash Memory From a File" and press ENTER.
  60. 9.  Highlight "Update System BIOS" and press ENTER.
  61. 10. Press TAB once to highlight the file name and press ENTER. 
  62. 11. The system will now give a warning stating that continuing
  63.     will destroy the current contents of the flash memory 
  64.     area. Press ENTER to continue.
  65. 12. When prompted that the BIOS has been successfully loaded, 
  66.     remove the bootable floppy from the drive and press ENTER
  67.     to reboot the system.
  68. 13. Press F1 or F2 to enter SETUP. 
  69. 14. On the first screen within SETUP, check the BIOS version to 
  70.     ensure that it is the new version.
  71. 15. In SETUP load the default values. 
  72.     a.  AMI BIOS: Press the F5 key.
  73.     b.  PhoenixBIOS: Go to the exit submenu and highlight 
  74.         "Load Setup Defaults". Press ENTER.
  75.      If you do not set the values back to defaults the system 
  76.      may function erratically.
  77. 16. If the system has unique settings, re-enter those settings 
  78.     now. Press F10 to save the values and exit Setup.

  81. Note: If you encounter a CMOS Checksum error or other problems 
  82. after rebooting, try rebooting the system again.  CMOS checksum 
  83. errors require that you enter Setup, check and save your settings, 
  84. and exit Setup.
