  5. 1. What is SETUPDS ?
  6. --------------------
  7. SETUPDS.EXE is an application which configures the DS-XG device with
  8. the resource and volume settings written in DS.INI, so that it can be
  9. used under MS-DOS environment.
  10. You can also use SETUPDS.EXE to change the settings for the DS-XG
  11. device, and the change which you make will be saved in DS.INI.
  12.

  14. 2. Start Up
  15. -----------
  16. To start up SETUPDS.EXE, input the following in MS-DOS command line.
  17.  
  18.     SETUPDS [options]
  19.  
  20. If SETUPDS.EXE is started up without any option, the CONFIGURATION MENU
  21. will be displayed.
  22.  
  23. <Options>
  24. /s : SETUPDS.EXE will configure the DS-XG device with the I/O port,
  25.      IRQ channel, DMA channel and volume settings which are written in
  26.      DS.INI, display the settings, and then exit. 
  27.      In this case, you cannot change the settings.
  28.  
  29. /d : SETUPDS.EXE will display the current settings which DS-XG device
  30.      is actually using.
  31.  
  32. /? : SETUPDS.EXE will display the options. 
  33.  
  34. ------------
  35. 3. Operation
  36. ------------
  37. If SETUPDS.EXE is started up without any option, the CONFIGURATION MENU
  38. will be displayed. This section will explain how to use this menu.
  39.  
  40. <Keys>
  41. [Up Arrow],[Down Arrow] ---> Select items, settings.
  42. [ + ],[ - ]             ---> Change volume.
  43. [Enter]                 ---> Accept items, settings.
  44. [ESC]                   ---> Cancel
  45.  
  46. <SOUND TEST>
  47. SOUND TEST is a function to check if your system can make sounds
  48. correctly through the speakers or headphones connected to the DS-XG
  49. device. It is recommended to use this function every time you change
  50. the settings.
  51. If an error dialog box is displayed, please refer to section 5 and make
  52. appropriate changes on the settings. If the error dialog box is not
  53. displayed and you still cannot hear any sound, please check if the
  54. volume settings on both DS-XG device and your PC speakers are appropriate
  55. or not.

  57. <Exit>
  58. To Exit CONFIGURATION MENU, press the [Esc] key in the main menu and
  59. select "EXIT" or "SAVE & EXIT". If "EXIT" is selected, the change
  60. you have made will be discarded. If "SAVE & EXIT" is selected, the
  61. change you have made will be saved in DS.INI and the DS-XG device
  62. will be re-configured with the settings.
  63. If any one of the settings in CONFIGURATION MENU is not available,
  64. an error dialog box will be displayed and you will not be able to
  65. exit CONFIGURATION MENU. Please make appropriate changes on the
  66. settings, or select "EXIT" to exit CONFIGURATION MENU.

  69. 4. Default Settings
  70. -------------------
  71. The factory default settings are as follows:
  72.  
  73. Legacy Audio:    Enable
  74. Sound Blaster:    I/O=220, IRQ=5, DMA=1
  75. FM:        I/O=388
  76. MPU:        I/O=330, IRQ=5
  77. Joystick:    I/O=201
  78. IRQ Mode:    ISA-IRQ
  79. DMA Mode:    PC/PCI    
  80. Legacy Volume:    Master= (Lch=Level 7, Rch=Level 7)
  81.                 Voice = (Lch=Level 7, Rch=Level 7)
  82.                 FM    = (Lch=Level 7, Rch=Level 7)
  83. AC97 Volume:    Master= (Lch=0dB, Rch=0dB)
  84.                 Line  = (Lch=0dB, Rch=0dB)
  85.                 CD    = (Lch=6dB, Rch=6dB)
  86.         PCM   = (Lch=0dB, Rch=0dB)
  87.         All the others are muted.

  90. 5. Error Messages
  91. -----------------
  92. The error messages and possible solutions for the errors are as follows:
  93.  
  94. "Error : This program does not run in windows DOS box."
  95. ---> SETUPDS.EXE does not support DOS box. (Win95 driver will configure
  96.      the DS-XG device in DOS box.)
  97.  
  98. "Error : Invalid option."
  99. ---> An option other than /s, /d, /? is used.
  100.  
  101. "Error : Can't find YAMAHA DS-XG."
  102. ---> The DS-XG device is not installed on your system.
  103.  
  104. "Error : Can't configure DS-XG because of Base address = 0.
  105.          Please make sure the [PNP OS] is "NO" in BIOS settings.
  106. ---> An invalid value is set to the base address. Please set
  107.      [PNP OS] to "NO" in BIOS settings.
  108.  
  109. "Error : Can't access the file ( ds.ini )."
  110. ---> DS.INI doesn't exist. Please make sure that there is DS.INI
  111.      in the same directory where SETUPDS.EXE resides.
  112.  
  113. "Can't find Sound Blaster at 0xXXX"
  114. ---> Sound Blaster I/O address 0xXXX is not available for the DS-XG.
  115.      Please change Sound Blaster I/O address.
  116.  
  117. "Can't detect Interrupt at IRQ X"
  118. ---> Sound Blaster IRQ channel X is not available for the DS-XG.
  119.      Please change Sound Blaster IRQ channel.
  120.  
  121. "Can't detect DMA at channel X"
  122. ---> Sound Blaster DMA channel X is not available for the DS-XG,
  123.      or the DMA mode is not available on your system.
  124.      If you have selected PC-PCI, you might need a special connector
  125.      between your sound card and the PC motherboard.
  126.      In other cases, please change Sound Blaster DMA channel or DMA
  127.      mode.
  128.  
  129. "Can't find FM at 0xXXX"
  130. ---> FM I/O address 0xXXX is not available for the DS-XG.
  131.      Please change FM I/O address.
  132.  
  133. "Can't find XXXXX.XXX"
  134. ---> The file XXXXX.XXX which is needed to run SETUPDS.EXE doesn't
  135.      exist. Please make sure that there is XXXXX.XXX in the same
  136.      directory where SETUPDS.EXE resides.
  137.  
  138. -----------
  139. 6. Cautions
  140. -----------
  141. 1. To run SETUPDS.EXE, these files are needed in the same directory
  142.    where SETUPDS.EXE resides:
  143.  
  144.     dos4gw.exe
  145.     ds.ini
  146.     ymh8.wav
  147.     ymh16.wav
  148.  
  149. 2. SETUPDS.EXE is an English application. If you are using Japanese
  150.    OS, please switch to the US mode before running SETUPDS.EXE.
  151.  
  152. 3. Depending on the system configuration, all the Sound Blaster items
  153.    will be grayed out and cannot be changed.
  154.    This indicates that Sound Blaster mode cannot be used on the system.
  155.  
  156. 4. Depending on the system configuration, INTA# IRQ will be grayed out
  157.    and cannot be changed even if you select INTA# in IRQ MODE.
  158.    This indicates that DS-XG and other device are sharing the same
  159.    INTA# IRQ on the system. If you are using DS-XG sound card, please
  160.    insert it in a different PCI slot and run SETUPDS.EXE again.
  161.    (Please make sure to turn off the power of your system before you
  162.    move the sound card.)
  163.  
  164. 5. Depending on the system configuration, DMA MODE will be grayed out
  165.    and cannot be changed. This indicates that the system supports only
  166.    the DMA MODE displayed. 
  167.    Also depending on the system configuration, some DMA MODE cannot be
  168.    selected. This indicates that the particular DMA MODE is not supported
  169.    on the system.
