  27. INTRODUCTION.
  28.  
  29. POSTER 5 is the Windows 95 32-bit version of the popular Windows shareware 
  30. program for making big posters, signs, and banners. Posters can be up to 
  31. 9 feet by 9 feet at 300 DPI, even bigger at lower resolutions.
  32. Poster combines the best features of word-processing,
  33. graphics, and desktop publishing with features especially tuned for 
  34. big posters and banners. This includes complete flexibility in the placement 
  35. of graphics, a full set of drawing tools and over 100 special effects 
  36. (like 3D, rotate, and arch) for text. All text and graphics are enlarged 
  37. and tiled over multiple pages. POSTER supports all True-Type and ATM 
  38. fonts, and imports graphics from BMP, GIF, JPG, and WMF files, as well as from the 
  39. Clipboard and OLE applications. POSTER supports full color, and most 
  40. Windows-compatible printers.  Full support is provided for non-standard 
  41. poster and paper sizes, including continuous form banner printing.

  43. POSTER is great for a wide variety of projects at work, school, home, or 
  44. clubs:
  45. 1. Creating large posters for presentations, projects, charts, etc.
  46. 2. Creating large signs for advertisements, announcements, etc.
  47. 3. Creating banners for special events, etc.
  48. 4. Enlarging pictures, charts, etc. for display.

  53. NOTE TO ALL USERS of POSTER 5.2:
  54. Poster versions 5.2 through 5.2h erroneously created temporary files
  55. and did not remove them.  This problem is now fixed, but you must
  56. manually remove these old files to free up space on your disk.
  57. You need only do this once.
  58. To do this:
  59. 1. Bring up an MS-DOS window.
  60. 2. Enter the command:
  61.     erase c:\windows\temp\~df*.tmp
  62. OR
  63. 1. Bring up Explorer and go to folder \windows\temp.
  64. 2. Manually delete all files of the form ~dfxxxx.tmp.

  67. INSTALLATION.
  68.  
  69. If you have unzipped the files, then you have practically installed the 
  70. program.  
  71.  
  72. To install the program:
  73. 1. Create a temporary directory (like \TEMP) and unzip the POSTER53.ZIP
  74.    file to that directory.
  75. 2. Run SETUP from the temporary directory.
  76.    c:\TEMP\SETUP
  77.  
  78. The package consists of the following files:
  79. 1. This README file.
  80. 2. Example, template, and tutorial files.
  81. 3. POSTER.EXE, which is the poster program itself.
  82. 4. POSTER.HLP, which is the on-line help file.
  83. 5. Several BORDERx.WMF border files.  These can be imported using
  84.    the Page->Border->From File command.

  89. PRINTER DRIVER NOTES:
  90.  
  91. BANNER PRINTING ON HP PRINTERS:
  92. Banner (continuous forms) are supported on HP 6xx and 7xx printers that
  93. specifically support continuous forms - banner mode.  HP 8xx printers
  94. do NOT support continuous forms.  See the notes below on continuous forms.
  95.  
  96. BANNER PRINTING ON EPSON COLOR STYLUS PRINTERS.
  97. The epson color stylus printers will print a banner up to 44 inches wide
  98. as a single continuous page.  To do this:
  99. 1. Go into Printer Setup for the Epson, and set page size to User Defined,
  100.    and set length to 44".
  101. 2. Start POSTER.
  102. 3. Select New->Horizontal (or Vertical). DO NOT SELECT BANNER MODE.
  103. 4. Create your poster.
  104. 5. Print it at 1x.
  105. If you want something longer than 44", you can select BANNER, then create
  106. a 2 page banner.  You will have to tape the 2 44" pages together.
  107.  
  108. HP680C (and 682C):
  109. To print Continuous forms (banner paper) correctly, you MUST have 
  110. version 9 of the printer driver.  Version 8 does not properly handle
  111. characters that cross page boundaries in banner mode.
  112. When printing banners, be sure to set the Paper mode to Banner in 
  113. the printer setup dialog box.  Also, make sure the 'continuous forms'
  114. box is checked in the POSTER Print dialog box.
  115.  
  116. CONTINUOUS FORMS:
  117. Poster supports continuous forms on dot matrix and the HP680. Be 
  118. sure to check the continuous forms box in the POSTER Print dialog box.
  119. You may use continuous forms for posters or banners.  Using it for
  120. posters causes your poster to be printed in continuous strips, reducing
  121. the amount you have to paste together.
  122. PROBLEMS WITH PAGE EJECTS WITH CONTINUOUS FORMS:
  123. If your printer page ejects while trying to print continuous forms,
  124. you must adjust the page size.  EACH time you print:
  125. 1. Select File->Print.  Then select Continuous Forms.
  126. 2. Click on "More"
  127. 3. Adjust the field "Override Paper Size, Height" to a smaller value.
  128. 4. Select OK.
  129. 5. Select OK.
  130. You may have to adjust this field up or down to get Poster to go to the
  131. very edge of the current page, and then begin the next page at the very top of
  132. the next page.

  134. PROBLEMS WITH DROPPED CHARACTERS AT PAGE BOUNDARIES:
  135. If POSTER drops characters at page boundaries, try checking 
  136. the box marked "Method A" in the PRINT dialog box. This should work ALL 
  137. printers (but not plotters).  If this still doesn't work, try "Method 
  138. B" or "Method C".  Also, see the special setup instructions below.

  141. LASERJET III USERS.
  142. If the posters you print are missing characters at page edges, then do 
  143. the following:
  144. 1. Select "Method A" in the Poster Print Dialog box.  Also, be sure your 
  145.    printer is set to 300 dpi.
  146. 2. If this doesn't work, or it is too slow for you, install and use the 
  147.    Laserjet II driver. 
  148.  
  149. LASERJET 4 USERS.
  150. To successfully print posters, you must configure your printer as 
  151. follows:
  152. 1. Select "Printer Setup":
  153. 2. Set resolution to 300 dpi. (At 600dpi, printing takes a very long 
  154.    time, and may hang the printer.)
  155. 3. Select "options". 
  156. 4. Select "Graphics Mode" = "raster", "Graphics Quality"="high", and
  157.      check "print true-type as graphics".
  158. 5. If posters still do not print properly, then in the PRINT dialog box, 
  159. check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always work.  
  160.  
  161. HP LARGE FORMAT (650, 760) USERS:
  162. Poster will support these printers. From printer setup, select the final page size
  163. you want, such as 22 x 44.  Then start Poster and select a horizontal or vertical
  164. poster. Print the poster at 1x.
  165. If you want something longer, start Poster and Select Custom Size.  Then select
  166. the number of pages long that you want (such as 1 page high by 2 pages long).
  167.  
  168. POSTSCRIPT PRINTER USERS.
  169. Not all Special Effects characters print properly on Postscript printers.
  170. If you get funny characters printing out, it is probably because you are
  171. using special effects.  Don't use those particular special effects that are
  172. marked in Poster as bad on postscript printers.
  173.  
  174. If you get postscript errors, or you are loosing characters at page 
  175. boundaries:
  176. 1. From the control panel, select Printers, then select 'Setup.
  177. 2. Select "options", then select "advanced".
  178. 3. Select "print true type fonts as" "Bitmap (type 3)".
  179. 4. Close the control panel.
  180. 5. Start POSTER.
  181. If posters still do not print properly, or print too slow, then in the 
  182. PRINT dialog box, check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always 
  183. work.
  184.  
  185. SLOW PRINTING.
  186. Sorry, but Windows printing is s..l..o..w.  I have no good solution for 
  187. this.  Be sure to verify your poster with "Preview" in the "Print" 
  188. dialog box.  Then, have patience while it prints.

  297. DEINSTALL  (REMOVING POSTER)
  298.  
  299. To remove POSTER from your system, do the following:
  300.  
  301. 1. Find the directory containing Poster.
  302. 2. Delete all files, using erase *.*.
  303.    Delete the file 'poster.ini' from your WINDOWS directory.
  304. 3. If you want to save the saved poster files, but remove the
  305.    program, then delete the files POSTER.EXE, POSTER.TXT, POSTER.HLP, 
  306.    and all the *.POE files.
  307. 4. To remove the start icon:
  308.     Win95: Click on 'Start', then 'Settings', then 'Task Bar', then
  309.         'Start Text Menu', then 'Remove'.  Find the Poster entry,
  310.         highlight it, and then click on 'Remove'.

  314. USING POSTER.
  315.  
  316. To start using poster, simply double click on the poster icon.  POSTER 
  317. will start and ask you for the poster or banner format. After selecting 
  318. the format you want, it will present an empty page to you.  Just start 
  319. typing to begin making your poster.

  321. The POSTER install program also associates *.POS files with POSTER.
  322. Double clicking on a POS file will 
  323. automatically start poster with that file.

  330. Users of POSTER must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
  331. "POSTER is supplied as is.  The author disclaims all
  332. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,

  335. quential, which may result from the use of POSTER."

  337. POSTER is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  338. to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  339. friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  340. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  341. provide personal computer users with quality software without
  342. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  343. continue to develop new products.  If you find this program
  344. useful and find that you are using POSTER and continue to use
  345. POSTER after a reasonable trial period, you must make a reg-
  346. istration payment of $16.  The registration fee will license one copy 
  347. for use on any one computer at any one time.  You must treat this
