  64. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  65. ===================
  66.  
  67. To run Internet Explorer 4.0, your system must meet the following 
  68. minimum requirements:
  69.  
  70. - A 486 with a 66 Mhz processor (Pentium processor recommended)
  71. - For Microsoft Windows 95:
  72.   8 MB of RAM minimum, 16 MB with Active Desktop
  73. á For Microsoft Windows NT:
  74.   16 MB of RAM minimum, 24 MB with Active Desktop
  75. - For Microsoft Windows NT: 
  76.   You must be running Service Pack 3 (or higher)
  77. - 40 to 70 MB of hard-disk space (depending on installation type) 
  78. - Mouse
  79. - Modem
  80. - CD-ROM
  81.

  83. SETUP
  84. =====
  85.  
  86. - Before you install Internet Explorer 4.0, you should make sure that no
  87.   scheduled tasks are running, because they might interfere with the Setup 
  88.   process.
  89.  
  90. - CAUTION: Do not install any previous version of Internet Explorer over 
  91.   Internet Explorer 4.0. If you need to install an earlier version of Internet 
  92.   Explorer, you must uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 first.
  93.  
  94. - If you have been using Platform Preview 2 release of Internet Explorer 
  95.   4.0, you should uninstall that version before installing the final version. 
  96.   During the uninstall process, you will be prompted to save your Outlook 
  97.   Express preferences; they will be used to set up Outlook Express when you 
  98.   install Internet Explorer 4.0. 
  99.  
  100. - It is recommended that you download Internet Explorer 4.0 to a 
  101.   directory that does not contain any other files and that will not 
  102.   be used for any other purpose. If for some reason you want to 
  103.   uninstall the Setup files, the download directory will be removed. 
  104.   For information about removing the Setup files, see "Installing Internet 
  105.   Explorer 4.0."
  106.  
  107. Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
  108. --------------------------------
  109. Whether you choose to install over the network or to download the 
  110. installation files to your hard disk, the Setup files are copied to 
  111. your hard disk. This is so you can reinstall more quickly if you need 
  112. to. If you want to reclaim the disk space, you can remove the Setup 
  113. directory by double-clicking the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control 
  114. Panel and then clicking Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup Files.
  115.  
  116. You cannot install Internet Explorer 4.0 to or run it from a 
  117. network drive. However, you can download it to a network drive. 
  118. To do this, you must map the network drive to a drive letter on 
  119. your computer. You cannot download Internet Explorer 4.0 to a 
  120. UNC path.
  121.  
  122. If Internet Explorer 4.0 appears to stop responding at the end 
  123. of Setup, you need to restart your computer manually. 
  124.  
  125. Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT
  126. -------------------------------------------
  127. NOTE: You must have administrative privileges to install and 
  128. uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes having 
  129. administrative privileges the first time you start your computer 
  130. after installing or uninstalling.
  131.  
  132. You must restart your computer after installing Internet Explorer 
  133. 4.0. This is also true for some add-on components.
  134.  
  135. If you're running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT, you must 
  136. set user permissions to Full Control for the Temporary Internet 
  137. Files folder (cache). The user must have write permission in order 
  138. for files to be stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
  139.  
  140. If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) after 
  141. you install Internet Explorer 4.0, you must specify when prompted 
  142. that you do not want it to overwrite any files that are newer. 
  143. After SP3 is reinstalled, carry out the following steps to update 
  144. the registry:
  145.  
  146. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  147. 2. Type the following: regsvr32 rsabase.dl
  148. 3. Click OK.
  149.  
  150. Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on a Dual-Boot Operating System
  151. -------------------------------------------------------------
  152. If your computer is set up to dual boot between two operating 
  153. systems, you must install multiple instances of Internet Explorer 
  154. 4.0 in a separate directory for each operating system. For example, 
  155. if you are running Windows 95 and Windows NT, you might want to 
  156. install Internet Explorer 4.0 in C:\IE95 for Windows 95 and in C:\IENT 
  157. for Windows NT. Do not try to use the same installation of Internet 
  158. Explorer with two operating systems. If you later uninstall Internet 
  159. Explorer 4.0, one of your operating systems may be left unbootable if 
  160. you don't follow these steps.
  161.  
  162. Note also that if you dual boot between two operating systems 
  163. that are configured to share a Program Files folder, and you 
  164. uninstall an add-on component from one of your Internet Explorer 
  165. 4.0 installations, it will be removed from both of them. This is 
  166. because the add-on files are stored in the Program Files folder.
  167.  
  168. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 4.0
  169. ----------------------------------
  170. You can uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 by carrying out the 
  171. following steps:
  172.  
  173. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  174. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  175. 3. Follow the instructions on your screen.
  176.  
  177. Cannot Use Registry or ERD Files Created Before 
  178.   Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
  179. -----------------------------------------------
  180. If you install Internet Explorer 4.0 and then restore a Windows 95 
  181. registry that was created before you installed Internet Explorer 4.0, 
  182. or use a Windows NT Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) that was created 
  183. before you installed Internet Explorer 4.0, you may be unable to 
  184. start Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.
  185.  
  186. To resolve this problem, use the Ieremove.exe tool to remove Internet 
  187. Explorer 4.0. For information about how to do so, open the Microsoft 
  188. Knowledge Base at http://www.microsoft.com/kb/default.asp, and then 
  189. see the following articles:
  190.  
  191.   For Windows 95, see Article Q166313, 
  192.   "Removing Internet Explorer 4.0 for Windows 95 Using Ieremove.exe"
  193.

  196.  
  197. Adding or Removing the Windows Desktop Update
  198. ---------------------------------------------
  199. To add or remove the Windows Desktop Update, carry out the following 
  200. steps:
  201.  
  202. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  203. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  204. 3. To remove it, click "Remove the Windows Desktop Update component 
  205.    but keep the Internet Explorer 4.0 Web browser."
  206.  
  207.    To add it, click "Add the Windows Desktop Update component from 
  208.    Web site," and then follow the instructions on the screen.
  209.  
  210. NOTE: For this release, clicking "Add the Windows Desktop Update 
  211. component from Web Site" opens the Internet Explorer 4.0 components 
  212. download page so you can download and install the Windows Desktop 
  213. Update. If you have previously downloaded or installed the Windows 
  214. Desktop Update, you can enable it without connecting to the Internet 
  215. by running IE4setup.exe from your local Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup 
  216. folder. When prompted, click Yes to enable the Windows Desktop 
  217. Update, and then choose to upgrade only newer items.
  218.  
  219. Installing Internet Explorer in a Language Different 
  220.   from the Operating System Language
  221. ----------------------------------------------------
  222. If you install a version of Internet Explorer in a language 
  223. different from the language of the operating system you are 
  224. running, the Windows Desktop Update will not be installed.
  225.  
  226.  
  227. CONFIGURING SUBSCRIPTIONS IN AMERICA ONLINE
  228. ===========================================
  229.  
  230. If you want, you can manually update your subscriptions through 
  231. America Online by carrying out the following steps:
  232.  
  233. 1. Right-click the Internet Explorer icon, and then click Properties.
  234. 2. Click the Connection tab.
  235. 3. Select the "Connect to the Internet using a local area network" 
  236.    check box.
  237. 4. In the Proxy Server area, make sure that the "Access the Internet 
  238.    using a proxy server" check box is not selected.
  239. 5. Connect to America Online, and then log on.
  240. 6. Open Internet Explorer.
  241. 7. Click the Favorites menu, and then click Update All Subscriptions.
  242.  
  243.  
  244. NOTE TO FRENCH USERS OF INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0
  245. =============================================
  246.  
  247. In order to comply with French laws on the use of encryption 
  248. material, the following features have been disabled for users 
  249. in France:
  250.  
  251. - S/MIME support in Outlook Express
  252. - The Microsoft Wallet secure storage feature
  253. - PCT 1.0 support
  254.  
  255. However, SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 support are authorized, and are 
  256. still enabled.
  257.  
  258.  
  259. KNOWN ISSUES
  260. ============
  261.  
  262. PICS Support in Internet Explorer 4.0
  263. -------------------------------------
  264. The Internet Explorer Content Advisor uses PICS (Platform for 
  265. Internet Content Selection) ratings. Please be aware of the 
  266. following items:
  267.  
  268. - The PICS rating is not used for documents using the file:// 
  269.   protocol.
  270.  
  271. - If you have ratings enabled, they will apply to items that 
  272.   you have added to your Active Desktop. A "Navigation Canceled" 
  273.   message will be displayed instead of Web content for Active 
  274.   Desktop items that are blocked due to content ratings. 
  275.  
  276. Some Programs Do Not Detect Browser Version Correctly
  277. -----------------------------------------------------
  278. Some third-party Internet-based programs use nonstandard 
  279. methods of detecting the current browser version. If you 
  280. experience this in a program you are running, please contact 
  281. the program vendor for an update.
  282.  
  283. Temporary Internet Files are Replicated 
  284.   to the Home Directory of Roaming Users
  285. ----------------------------------------
  286. The Temporary Internet Files folder is replicated to the home 
  287. directory of users with roaming profiles. If you are running 
  288. Internet Explorer 4.0 on a Windows NT system, this may cause 
  289. disk-space problems on servers with numerous roaming users or 
  290. with several users who have with large caches. To set cache size, 
  291. click the View menu, click Internet Options, and then click the 
  292. Settings button.
  293.  
  294. Using NetMeeting When Internet Explorer 4.0 Is in Offline Mode
  295. --------------------------------------------------------------
  296. If you start NetMeeting with Internet Explorer 4.0 in Offline 
  297. mode, NetMeeting will not start properly, although no error 
  298. message appears. To work around this problem, dial up using RAS 
  299. for Windows NT computers or Dial-Up Networking for Windows 95 
  300. computers. Or, in Internet Explorer, click the File menu, and 
  301. then click Work Offline to clear the check mark.
  302.  
  303. Access Aptiva Issues with Internet Explorer 4.0
  304. -----------------------------------------------
  305. The Access Aptiva component of the IBM Aptiva PC does not render 
  306. properly with Internet Explorer 4.0. To get an updated version of 
  307. the Access Aptiva program, you can either go to the IBM home page 
  308. at http://www.us.pc.ibm.com/aptiva, or click IBM Update Connector 
  309. on the Start menu, which automatically downloads the updated 
  310. components.
  311.  
  312.  
  313. APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  314. =========================
  315.  
  316. Adobe Acrobat: Using Internet Explorer 4.0 with 
  317. Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0
  318. -----------------------------------------------
  319. Using the Adobe Acrobat .pdf viewer in Internet Explorer 4.0 
  320. may not work. You can download the latest version from 
  321. http://www.adobe.com.
  322.  
  323. Also, if Content Advisor is turned on in Internet Explorer 4.0, 
  324. you cannot view .pdf files in the browser.
  325.  
  326. CleanSweep: Critical System Files Replaced
  327. ------------------------------------------
  328. If you are already running Internet Explorer 4.0, installing 
  329. CleanSweep 3.0 is not recommended. CleanSweep replaces vital 
  330. system files and will cause both Internet Explorer and the 
  331. Active Desktop not to work properly.
  332.  
  333. If you must install CleanSweep, please visit this site for

  338. DEC ClientWorks: Remove Xdmisrv.exe Before Installing 
  339.   Internet Explorer 4.0
  340. -----------------------------------------------------
  341. If you are running DEC Client Works on a computer with Windows 95 
  342. and with no networking services installed, you should remove the 
  343. file Xdmisrv.exe from your startup group before installing Internet 
  344. Explorer 4.0. Otherwise, you may see the following error message when 
  345. your computer restarts after installation: "RPCSS caused an invalid 
  346. page fault in module OLE32 at 015F:7FFBAD35." This error does not 
  347. occur if any networking services are installed, including Dial-Up 
  348. Networking. This issue has been fixed in DCOM95 1.1, which you can 
  349. download from http://www.microsoft.com/com/.
  350.  
  351. Microsoft Money: Requires Updated 128-bit Extensions
  352. ----------------------------------------------------
  353. If you install Microsoft Money 97 on a computer running Internet 
  354. Explorer 4.0, please go to the following Web site: 
  355.  
  356.      http://www.microsoft.com/ie/ie40/download/128bit.htm
  357.  
  358. in order to get the updated 128-bit extensions required for online 
  359. banking with Microsoft Money (U.S. and Canadian users only). Until 
  360. these extensions are installed, you will not be able to do online 
  361. banking.
  362.  
  363. Norton Utilities and Norton Navigator
  364. -------------------------------------
  365. - Norton Utilities version 2.0 is not compatible with the Internet 
  366.   Explorer 4.0 Recycle Bin because of new features that have been 
  367.   added to Internet Explorer.
  368.  
  369. - If you are running Norton Navigator, note that the Control Panel 
  370.   shortcuts on the Start menu do not work.
  371.  
  372. - If you reposition the taskbar to the left or right side of your 
  373.   desktop, the Norton Navigator quick launch area disappears.
  374.  
  375. - If you are running Norton Navigator, you need to disable the 
  376.   Norton Taskbar feature in order to use the functionality of 
  377.   the new Internet Explorer 4.0 taskbar.
  378.

  382. Procomm Plus 95: Browser Properties Control Doesn't Work
  383. --------------------------------------------------------
  384. In the Procomm Plus 95 Web browser, the Browser Properties control on 
  385. the Setup menu does not work. However, you can set browser properties 
  386. by double-clicking the Internet icon in the Windows Control Panel. 
  387. Property settings for the Internet Explorer 4.0 browser will also 
  388. apply to the Procomm browser.
  389.  
  390. Stacker: Size of Host Drive Must Be Increased
  391. ---------------------------------------------
  392. If you run Stacker 4.1 on a computer with Internet Explorer 4.0, 
  393. you must increase the size of the host drive. If you do not increase 
  394. the size of the host drive, you will not be able to restart your 
  395. computer successfully. For more information, please visit the

  398. Telcom Fax: Unable to Send Network Faxes
  399. ----------------------------------------
  400. This product currently does not work with Internet Explorer 4.0. 
  401. For information about Telcom Fax 4.0, which is compatible with 
  402. Internet Explorer 4.0, contact the manufacturer or visit their 
  403. eb site at http://www.ltc.com.
