  25. NEW FEATURES 
  26.  
  27. 1.  VirusScan's powerful new user interface provides 
  28.     advanced scan configuration settings and a complete
  29.     Tools menu. From the Tools menu, users can: Password 
  30.     protect scan tasks, gain access to the McAfee Virus 
  31.     List, and start the VirusScan Console. The Tools menu
  32.     is conveniently located in VirusScan's main window.     
  33.  
  34. 2.  The VirusScan Console is an intuitive addition to
  35.     VirusScan for Windows 95. The VirusScan Console
  36.     facilitates easy and efficient scheduling and 
  37.     configuring of scan tasks. 
  38.  
  39. 3.  VirusScan v3.1.0 offers configuration lockdown for 
  40.     both the on-demand scanner and VShield, the on-access
  41.     scanner, through password protection. 
  42.  
  43.     Users or administrators can now password protect scan
  44.     settings to prevent unintentional changes being made.

  46. 4.  ScreenScan is now compatible with 3-D screen savers

  405. KNOWN ISSUES
  406.  
  407. 1.  The new 3000 series DATs contained in VirusScan v3.1.0
  408.     are not backward compatible with the VirusScan v2.x
  409.     series. The 3000 series DATs should not be used with
  410.     VirusScan v2.x products.
  411.  
  412. 2.  Windows 95 no longer requires MS-DOS memory managers.
  413.     Using MS-DOS memory managers may cause VirusScan for
  414.     Windows 95 to falsely detect viruses in memory. To
  415.     eliminate false warnings, remark (Rem) the memory 
  416.     manager lines from your CONFIG.SYS to deactivate them.
  417.  
  418. 3.  ScreenScan's log file has a maximum size of 100KB. If
  419.     the file reaches this size, the oldest data will be
  420.     deleted. To retain logging data, you should edit the
  421.     content to keep the log file under 100K or save the
  422.     oldest data to another file.
  423.  
  424. 4.  ScreenScan will stop scanning after it detects a 
  425.     virus and prompt you to launch VirusScan. If you have
  426.     additional viruses on your system, ScreenScan will not
  427.     notify you until the next time it activates. McAfee
  428.     recommends that you scan and clean your entire system
  429.     with VirusScan whenever ScreenScan detects a virus.
  430.  
  431. 5.  After uninstalling ScreenScan, the screen saver will
  432.     be set to None. You can reactivate your screen saver
  433.     from the Display Properties.
  434.  
  435. 6.  If using CTRL+ALT+DEL to shut down a Windows 95 system
  436.     when VShield or any other VxD is enabled, Windows will
  437.     not shut down. However, VShield or the VxD will be
  438.     disabled. Windows will not shut down unless the shut
  439.     down process is repeated. This is a known issue with
  440.     Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system.   
  441.  
  442. 7.  When creating an Emergency Disk, you must close all 
  443.     open windows to the floppy drives. The Emergency Disk
  444.     creation utility must have exclusive access to the 
  445.     floppy or the system file transfer may fail, making
  446.     the disk non-bootable.    
  447.  
  448. 8.  If password protection is set for VShield or any
  449.     scan task, when an associated program is launched, you 
  450.     will be prompted to verify the password. You must use 
  451.     the mouse to click in the text field to enter the 
  452.     password, or click on Cancel to exit. Keyboard strokes
  453.     are not functional. This is a Microsoft issue as stated 
  454.     in Microsoft's Knowledge Base Article ID #Q84133.
  455.  
  456. 9.  The Status properties page for VShield Properties can
  457.     only be updated by closing and reopening VShield's Task
  458.     Properties window.
  459.  
  460. 10. If an .LZH file is infected with the Concept macro
  461.     virus, you must first decompress the file to delete
  462.     the virus.
  463.  
  464. 11. The VShield component of VirusScan 3.1.0 contains
  465.     significant enhancements over the VShield component
  466.     of VirusScan 3.0.0. Because of these extensive
  467.     modifications to the product, McAfee strongly recom-
  468.     mends you reboot your system after installing the new
  469.     version of VirusScan. You will not be protected by
  470.     VShield until you reboot.
  471.  
  472. 12. When running two or more instances of Scan32.EXE and two or 
  473.     more LHA compressed archives are scanned simultaneously,
  474.     Scan32.EXE will terminate with a page fault.
  475.  
  476. 13. Scan32.EXE cannot scan boot sectors on FAT32 systems.
  477.  
  478. 14. When an infected file is unzipped directly to a Novell 
  479.     server, VShield will not detect the infection as the file
  480.     is created. For maximum security, use VirusScan to scan
  481.     the Novell server after the files have been unzipped to 
  482.     the server.
  483.  
  484. ____________
  485. INSTALLATION         
  486.  
  487. * INSTALLING THE PRODUCT *
  488.  
  489. 1.  Do one of the following:
  490.     
  491.     - If installing from diskette or compact disc, insert it 
  492.       into your floppy disk drive or CD-ROM drive.
  493.  
  494.     - If installing from files downloaded from a BBS or the 
  495.       McAfee Web Site, decompress the zipped files into a 
  496.       directory on the network or your local drive.
  497.  
  498. 2   Select Run from the Start menu.
  499.  
  500. 3.  If installing from diskette, type x:\setup.exe where x 
  501.     is the drive in which you placed the diskette. Click OK.
  502.  
  503.     If installing from compact disc, type x:\win95\setup.exe
  504.     where x is the drive in which you placed the CD-ROM. 
  505.     Click OK.
  506.  
  507.     If installing from downloaded files, type 
  508.     x:\path\setup.exe  where x:\path is the location of the
  509.     files (for example, C:\DOWNLOAD\SETUP.EXE). Click OK.
  510.  
  511.     Response: The Welcome screen is displayed. Click Next to 
  512.     continue.
  513.  
  514. 4.  Follow the on-screen installation instructions to 
  515.     complete VirusScan installation.
  516.  
  517. 5.  When installation is complete, reboot your system
  518.     for the changes to take effect. 
  519.  
  520.  
  521. * PERFORMING A SILENT INSTALLATION *
  522.  
  523. If you would like to perform a "silent" installation
  524. of VirusScan, requiring minimal user interaction and
  525. using all default or "Typical" installation settings,
  526. add -s (i.e. SETUP.EXE -s) to the setup command when
  527. you install the product.
  528.  
  529. Network Administrators can customize the silent
  530. installation feature by following the steps outlined
  531. below.
  532.  
  533. 1.  Check in the Windows directory to ensure that a
  534.     file named SETUP.ISS does not already exist. If it
  535.     does, rename it, back it up, or delete it.
  536.  
  537. 2.  Run SETUP.EXE with the -r switch, (i.e. SETUP.EXE -r).
  538.  
  539. 3.  Select the components you would like to be installed
  540.     during the silent installation.  All responses will
  541.     be recorded.
  542.  
  543. 4.  Finish the installation, and locate the file SETUP.ISS
  544.     in the Windows directory.
  545.  
  546.     Note: You can modify this file to allow the instal-
  547.           lation to copy the VirusScan files to the drive
  548.           where the operating system resides instead of 
  549.           defaulting to the C: drive by following the 
  550.           instructions below:
  551.           
  552.           Locate the section [SdSetupType-0] in the 
  553.           SETUP.ISS file and go to the line: Result=x
  554.  
  555.           where x is equal to:
  556.           301 (Typical installation)
  557.           302 (Compact installation)
  558.           303 (Custom installation)
  559.  
  560.           Add 100 to the above value, so that the Result
  561.           variable is equal to 401, 402, or 403. 
  562.  
  563. 7.  Copy the installation files onto a local or mapped
  564.     drive, then rename, back up, or delete the SETUP.ISS
  565.     file.
  566.  
  567.     Note: A silent install cannot be performed from
  568.           multiple media as the silent operation will be
  569.           comprimised when the install prompts the user
  570.           for more media. 
  571.  
  572. 8.  Copy the new SETUP.ISS from the Windows directory
  573.     to the location of the installation files.
  574.  
  575. 9.  Run SETUP.EXE with the -s switch (i.e. SETUP.EXE -s).
  576.  
  577.     NOTE: If you do not specify a "recorded" answer for
  578.     all dialog boxes during the initial installation, the
  579.     silent installation will fail. Also, the file used
  580.     for the silent installation, SETUP.ISS, may not work
  581.     properly across different operating systems. For
  582.     example, if the silent install is generated for
  583.     Windows 95, it may not work properly in Windows 3.1x
  584.     or Windows NT.
  585.  
  586. 10. When the silent installation is complete, the machine 
  587.     will reboot automatically.
  588.

  794. MANUALLY UNINSTALLING THE PRODUCT

  796. McAfee recommends using VirusScan's uninstall program
  797. provided. You can access the uninstaller from the Start menu
  798. in Programs/McAfee VirusScan. If, however, UNINSTALLER.EXE
  799. is not present on your system, follow the instructions
  800. outlined below to manually uninstall VirusScan:

  802. 1.  Remove VirusScan from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

  804.     1.  Go to the System Configuration Editor window by
  805.         typing SYSEDIT in the Start/Run dialog box and press

  922.     have the VirusScan Console open when the scan was to take

  924.     minimized) in order for the scan to take place.

  927. Q:  VirusScan detected a virus on my system, but it is not
  928.     a document, spreadsheet, or executable file (.EXE, .COM,

  932. A:  If you suspect a false detection on a non-executable 
  933.     file, run VirusScan's command line scanner, SCAN.EXE,

  957.     Internet to download your order via the Internet.

  978. A:  To enable your own Emergency Disk, you must create a

  1004.     1.  Navigate to the location of the saved .VSC file.
  1005.     2.  Right-click on the .VSC file to reveal the

  1007.     3.  From the Context Menu, select Properties.  
  1008.     4.  Select the Options Tab on the property sheet.
